Omega Speedmaster Mark II (Reissue) Milking the Love-of-Vintage Phenomena

By Meor Amri Meor Ayob Photos from the internet Thursday, January 23, 2014 Omega is really milking the nostalgia of its vintage models. Last year was the Seamaster Bullhead. In 2014, it is the Speedmaster Mark IIs turn.

The Omega Speedmaster Mark II was launched in 1969 and powered by the famous Caliber 861. Vintage watch collectors love the way the elongated part of the watch case, at the lug ends, merges gracefully to the round dial. Any Mark II that becomes available for sale will be quickly snapped up by enthusiasts.

Omega wants to be part of this love-of-vintage phenomena. Last years experiment with the Bullhead was a resounding success to the brand. Keeping to the same strategy, Omega is betting on a similar winner with the Mark II. To ensure the 2014 version incorporates the latest technology (to justify the premium price point!!), it has been updated to include an automatic mechanical movement and luminous tachy scale. Buyers will have two options. One with a traditional Speedmaster black dial or a livelier piece with grey dial and fluorescent orange accents.

The dial has the familiar layout with three sub-dials; a 30-minute counter sub-dial at 3 oclock, a 12-hour counter sub-dial at 6 oclock and a seconds sub-dial at 9 oclock. The watch is painted substantially with Super-LumiNova to ensure eligibility of the scales in the dark. Meanwhile the dial is protected with sapphire crystal. The watch also comes a stainless steel bracelet, complete with Omegas patented extendable foldover rack-and-pusher Lumiclasp. The Caliber to power this reincarnation is the Co-Axial Calibre 3330, a self-winding movement equipped with an Si14 silicon balance spring and a column-wheel chronograph mechanism. The official launch is slated to be in March 2014 during Baselworld 2014. Reports have indicated a retail price for the Omega Speedmaster Mark II watches will be US$6,250. Compared to the existing line of Speedmasters, I guess the price point does appear comparable.

End.
