Lindsey Bodnar Blog Post #3 It Happened One Night 1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the

screening. While watching the movie It Happened One Night, there was many points compared to the book and our in class discussions. We were recently discussing sound in films and this movie was the first one with actual sound quality. Not only was sound a matter, but because of the Catholic League of Decency this movie was considered a ScrewBall comedy, in which women were equal to the men or better. The women in this time of the movie were not depicted as sexual objects, or valued less then men. 2)Find a related article and summarize the content. http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/18744|0/It-Happened-One-Night.html This article Margarita Landazuri discusses how the actors were chosen for the movie, and how much give an take an actor in this time period would put up with. Clark Gable our lead actor in this movie Peter. He showed up to is meeting under the influence, and frustrated saying that he would not play any more gigilo roles. Eventually Gable and Capra became good friends and after reading the script he accepted the role. Finding a woman to play Ellie was a bit more of a difficult task she was under contract with Paramount and had a limited amount of free time to film, however her pay would be rasied $25,000. Her original salary was $25,00 per movie, and Capra was offering an additional $25,00 for just four weeks of her time to she accepted. Landazuri states that some scenes in the movie were a bit sexual for the time being for instance when Ellie sticks her leg out to get the car to stop. Originally a chorus woman was supposed to be a leg double because actress Claudette Colbert did not feel comfortable lifting her skirt and flashing her leg, but when watching the scene she jumped in and told her to Get out of here, Ill do it thats not my leg.(Colbert) This article also mentions that Gable was not wearing an undershirt and the reason for this was because director Capra argued that it would not make a smooth shot to film. The article continues to talk about the actors and the roles they played and also how this movie was the first to sweep the Oscars in Best Actor, Actress, Picture, Director, and Screenplay. 3)Apply the article to the film screened in class. After reading this article it really made me appreciate the well being of actors back in the 1930s. In todays society I feel as if actors and actresses are willing to sell themselves for a substantial amount of money, which is probably true. However this article shows how back in this tim period certain actors and actresses wouldnt stand for certain things. Landazuris article changed the way I thought about this film because Claudettes role was so believable and in the movie it felt as if she loved her part. It was very strange to read how she did not even like the part she played which coincides with my first statement that actors and actresses can sell themselves for money. This article also talked about the scenes that were considered sexual for the time being and it is very interesting to see how times have changed. Peter buttoning up Ellie blouse was considered sexual in the 1930s and in todays society it would probably be considered PG, its really amusing to see how times have changed and developed. 4) Write a critical analysis of the film Even though we have only watched two films in this class thus far this movie will probably remain in the top ones simply because of the story line. It shows a strong willed woman trying to make it away from her father to another man, only to realize she isnt fully satisfied with life. Capras style of directing was executed very well in this film, he took risks with the scenes that might have been risk-ay and turned them into an art. However the most important thing that I saw in this film was its place in history and how this woman was portrayed. During the time this

movie was filmed women did not have the same rights as men did, and this film to my belief shows a rebellious character of women, yet also shows obedience amongst women as well. Ellie runs away from her father, and then on the road meets Peter who she becomes attached to and listens to him. Ellies character in this film shows the importance of women in society, and how a simple acts of rebellion can change yourself for the better.
