Content Standard/s : 2.2. By the end of the 6-year primary schooling, pupils will be able to demonstrate understanding of a variety of linear and non-linear texts in the form of print and non-printed materials using a range of strategies to construct meaning. Learning Standards : 2.2.2 Able to read and understand phrases and sentences in linear and non-linear texts. 2.2.4. Able to read and understand a paragraph with simple and compound sentences. Learning Objectives : At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:i. ii. Language Content/Item Read and identify relevant information from text. Extract relevant information from texts to answer questions. : Vocabulary

Set Induction

1. Teacher asks greetings to pupils: a. Good morning b. How are you? c. What time do they up this morning? d. How many of the have got their breakfast? 2. The teacher asks the pupils if any of them knows what a sandwich is. 3. The teacher tells the pupils that a sandwich is healthy food especially the ones with vegetables.

Presentation

1. The teacher distributes a piece of letter (appendix a: pen pal letter about sandwich recipe) to each the pupils. 2. The teacher displays the same letter on the LCD and asks the pupils to keep their letters first and pay attention to the one on the screen. 3. The teacher reads aloud the text to the pupils and asks them to follow. 4. The teacher asks the pupils to highlight any words that they have difficulty with and explains to them what the words means.

5. The teacher asks the pupils to read aloud the letter.

Practice

1. The teacher divides the pupils into groups and distributes a set of manila cards contains information transfer exercises extracted from the text (letter) given to the pupils. They will have to write the answers on the manila cards. (Appendix B) 2. The teacher asks the pupils to read the instructions aloud. 3. The teacher gives time for the pupils to do the exercise. 4. The teacher walks around the classroom to monitor pupils participation and asses their performance. 5. The teacher provides help for the pupils who are having problems with the questions. 6. The teacher asks the groups to paste their work in front of their classroom and asks for a representative from each group to stay with their manila card. 7. The teacher then checks the answers by asking the pupils to point and read aloud the sentence in the text which contains the answers. 8. The teacher asks the

representatives at front to do correction/s for any mistakes occurred.

Production

1. The teacher asks the pupils to sit at their places. 2. The teacher distributes worksheets (Appendix C) to the pupils and asks them to write their names on the worksheet. 3. The teacher asks the pupils to read aloud the instructions on the worksheet. 4. The teacher gives time for the pupils to read the text and complete the worksheet. 5. The teacher walks around the classroom to monitor the pupils progress and provide help for those who need. 6. The teacher asks the pupils to switch their paper with their class members. 7. The teacher checks the answers with the pupils by asking them to point out and read aloud sentences in the text that contains the answers. 8. The teacher asks the pupils to do corrections on their friends paper. 9. Then the teacher collects the worksheet to assess the pupils

progress.

Assessment

Pupils are assessed through their ability to read while the read aloud session, participation in groups works and also their abilities to use skimming and scanning while going through texts to find answers.

Closure / Feedback

1. The teacher distributes a piece of flashcards contains a draft of a letter to each of the pupils. 2. The teacher asks the pupils to read the instructions aloud. 3. The teacher then explains the instructions to the pupils (they will need to find their own recipe, read for the ingredients and instructions and share the recipe by writing a letter to a pen pal. 4. The teacher reminds the pupils to complete the work and bring it on the next class to collect.
