4 Sine and Cosine Ratios Day 1 Preliminary Planning PA Standard: 2.8.G.A (Anchor G.2.1.1.2) 2.10.G.A (Anchor G.2.1.1.2) Behavioral Objectives: Students will compute the sine and cosine ratios for various right triangles. Students will use the sine, cosine, inverse sine, and inverse cosine ratios to find the acute angles of various right triangles. Materials: SMARTboard Calculators Mini Golf Hole Worksheets Scrap paper ELMO Individual Modifications: none for this class Differentiation ideas for struggling learners: o Students may use highlighters to color code which sides of the triangle are opposite or adjacent to the indicated angle. Key Vocabulary Terms: Sine Cosine Learning Sequence: INTO (3 min) There will be a right triangle on the board with the sides labeled as opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse and one of the acute angles will be labeled as A.

A: Yes, opposite and hypotenuse and adjacent and hypotenuse THROUGH (37 min) The teacher will use a SMARTboard presentation to explain each of the theorems, formulas, and definitions in this section. Guided practice problems will be done as a class to demonstrate how to apply the different theorems and formulas. o The sine ratio: This can be abbreviated as

o Q: We could use the inverse tangent ratio to find the measure of the angle from the length of the two sides. Can we do something similar with sine and cosine? A: Yes, we can use the inverse sine and the inverse cosine ratios. o Ex 3: Find the measure of angle A to the nearest degree. Answer:

o Ex 4: Katniss Everdeen aims at the bulls eye of a target that is 60m away. She gets distracted and just before she releases the arrow and swings her bow an angle of a quarter of a degree. By how many centimeters will she miss the bulls eye? Answer: Mini Golf Activity o For the remaining of class, the students will work with their elbow partners to find all of the labeled angles and missing shot lengths of a golf ball on a mini golf hole. o Directions: Work with your elbow partner to find the missing labeled angles and shot lengths on the mini golf hole. Use may use a calculator to find all of the missing angles and shot lengths. Round all of your calculations to the nearest hundredth. Label all of the missing sides and angles clearly on the diagram or neatly on the side. Show all of your work. Once you have found all of the angles and sides find the total distance the ball traveled in feet.

BEYOND (3 min) To check for understanding, students will check their answers for the mini golf activity and will explain how they found each missing angle and shot length and if another trigonometric ratio or theorem could have been used. Homework: Mini golf competition The class will be split into four groups. Each group will be given a different blank mini golf hole. Each student will draw the shots the ball could take from its starting position until it lands in the hole. Each student will find all the angles created by the different shots using a calculator and the three inverse trigonometric ratios. The students may use a ruler to measure the side lengths in centimeters to use in their calculations. The students will be trying to see who can make the shortest path on their mini golf hole. Reflection Class was shortened to 35 minutes today because of Patriot Pride. Still got through all of the examples, though they were rushed. The material was fairly easy for most of the students to pick up. The class seemed to really enjoy the mini golf activity. There was not much time left at the end to give the class the homework instructions, so it will be interesting to see what gets brought in tomorrow.
