On the Wednesday following, Mohammed was seized
with a violent headache and fever; but it passed off. The next morning he found himself sufficiently recovered to bind with his own hand upon the Flagstaff a banner for the army. He presented it to Usama with these words: 'Fight thou beneath this banner in the name of the Lord, and for His cause. Thus thou shalt discomfit and slay the people that disbelieveth in the Lord.' The camp was then formed at Jorf; and the whole body of fighting men, not excepting even Abu Bakr and Umar, were summoned to join it. (The Life of Mohammed, London, 1877) This narration is about an expedition led by Usama bin Zaid (R.A.) to mount an invasion of the Syrian frontier on 18th of Safar of 11 A.H. Hazrat Usama was a quite young man aging 18 years at that time. On the other hand, all the companions of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) were ordered to report for duty to Usama (R.A.) and to serve under him. Among these noble companions, the oldest, the richest & the most powerful men like Abu Bakar, Umar bin Al-Khitab, Abdur Rahman bin Auf, Abu Obaida ibn al-Jarrah, Sa'ad bin Abi Waqqas, Talha, Zubayr, Khalid bin al-Walid, and many others (may God be pleased with them) were supposed to report him. I forced to refer this incident because, I feel, there is a line, prevailing between senior & junior ones. Let us try to erase this line. Let us try to give respect our elders & love to youngsters. But when it is about selection, always give preference to the merit, merit & only merit. 2nd issue of vol.3 is in front of your sight. Read it, analyze it and criticize it but dont forget to give your feed back to us. We have tried to make it better & catchy but you will feel that there is a lot of room for improvement. You are requested to give your valuable suggestions & comments. It will be our honor to have comments and suggestions from you because in this way we could be able to make this publication more informative. Here, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of my editorial team. Born again to Fly High: Oath Taking Ceremony

Friday March 30, 2012 is a memorable day for library professionals in general and Punjab University Alumni in specific. On this day the second elected body of Punjab University Library and Information Science Alumni Association (PULISAA) took the OATH for the period of two years 2012-2014 in the auditorium of Central Library University of the Punjab Lahore. New PULISAA body composition: Mr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya (President), Mr. Muhammad Ashraf Shakoori (Vice President), Dr. Nosheen Fatima Warraich (Secretary), Mr. Waris Ali Arslan (Joint Secretary) and Mr. Ghulam Yasim Malik (Treasurer). COUNCILORS Mr. Asif Waheed, Mr. Muhammad Shafiq, Mr. Muhammad Naushad Ghazanfar, Mr. Muhammad Asif Munir, Ms. Sadaf Rafiq, Mr. Asif Bilal Chaudhary, Mr. Zaheer Ahmad, Ms. Ammara Yousaf , Dr. Muhammad Rafiq and Mr. Akhtar Naseer Warraich. Dr. Mujahid Kamran worthy Vice Chancellor of University of the Punjab grace this ceremony by his presence as chief guest among. The ceremony began at 3.30 P.M. More then 125 PULISAA members attended this ceremony. Dr. Kanwal Amin, the Patron of PULISAA presided over this event. After taking oath the former acting secretary Mr. Ghulam Yasin Malik requested new secretary Dr. Nosheen Fatima Warraich to come on the dice and to continue the session. Mr. Muhammad Shafiq Shahid Rana ex-president of PULISAA body in his address to the PULISAA members highlighted the achievements of his body during 2010-2011. It was a good experience of making connection to the professionals working in different institutes and linking them in PULISAA. It remains hard to get time for volunteer activities for the professionals but all team members volunteered spare their time and organized many successful events with the collaboration of national and international organizations. PULISAA annual dinner 2011 was a successful event of the body and after many years it was a successful get together. It was blend of professionals having different levels of experience from different organizations. The development of dynamic and interactive website of PULISAA was also another achievement of his team. He told that the election is being conducted well in time to promote and strengthen the democratic electoral process. It was conducted under the guidelines set for electoral process. He also discussed the PULISAA constitution; which is drafted by the committee of seasoned professionals and library science academicians who worked for it and the final draft is ready for discussion today in the general body meeting. He hoped that the newly elected PULISAA body will make this platform more vibrant for the LIS Professionals. Dr. Kanwal Amin, The Patron of PULISAA, discussed the role of alumni associations in developing the image of institutions and its alumnus as well as a resource generation hub for the institution in the west. She also shared her experiences of PULSAA and its revival under the name of PULISAA. She recalled her memories and her role in PULISAA. In her address she float an idea of establishing a PULISAA corner in the department where the pictorial activities and the publications of previous PULSAA and PULISAA bodies must be displaced. She gave details about the revival of PULISA into PULISAA after many years of its slumbering ineffective role in the past. Alumni bodies are always ambassadors of their institutes and market their institutes worth in the world and they can also generate resources for them. In Pakistan alumni associations are not much active and it is the need of the time to give them a role in developmental activities. She highlighted the issue of professionals servinng in the university in pay scale 16 and struggle for personal pay scale to 17 in front of the worthy Vice Chancellor. She urged for a uniform service structure in the country and pay scales of the library professionals should be reviewed and should be appointed on regular pay scale 17 on the time of their first induction in any organization. Mr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya, Newly elected president of PULISAA body 201214 in his address told about the blend of senior and junior professionals in his team and discussed his ambitions for upbringing this profession to pride by the active guidance of Patron, his team and the active support of PULISAA body. past, legends of our profession have served on same portfolio. So, at the same time, he feels under pressure, as whatever, they have contributed, is really difficult to achieve. This position is very demanding but he is confident that the team which is here with him is the best team available and majority of persons are aware that he always believe in team work. He admired the activities and contribution of Mr. Shafiq Shahid Rana and his team who worked really hard and they also successfully completed the election process. He mentioned the names who really contributed in last PULISAA body and those were Dr, Farzana Shafiq, Ms. Hina Batool, Ghulam Yasin Malik, Muhammad Asif Munir and Muhammad Ashraf Shakoori and off course the President, Mr. Shafiq Shahid Rana. He recalled the day when PULSAA was revived as PULISAA under the leadership of Prof. Dr. kanwal Amin. She must be happy and satisfied as process has been started. We can expect better team through election process as it purifies the system. He shared his future plans however, the body will decide the short term and long term plans for two years tenure. He is interested in launching a campaign for the PULISAA membership and wants to bring maximum alumni on this association and shall try to provide them a platform so that they can interact with each other. A National Level Conference will be organized. He is interested to arrange practical training workshops and certificate courses to provide continuing education to PULISAA members. An Endowment Fund is also planned to help needy students and alumni. He said that People say I am

Over Ambitious yes I am. I dream with open eyes and I set my goals very high and then start my struggle to achieve those. I could imagine many more people who are more intelligent, more hard worker and more ambitious than me. I just want to request them why not join us to make those goals from dreams to reality, why not we make all those achievable. Lets leave all personal biases, personal benefits, egos, likings and disliking apart and start a joint struggle to make this profession, best profession of the world, lets make this profession the most respectable profession in this country. Lets introduce this profession in the society as important part of the society. Individual cant do this; even these 15 persons cant do this until and unless, everybody starts contributing its role. So I and my team need your help, if you extend your hand to help us, I assure you to achieve even unachievable. He paid special thanks to worthy Vice Chancellor who spared his valuable time to grace the occasion and listened us with patience. He also requested him to patronize the library community as this community is feeling neglected. He thanked Ch. Muhammad Hanif, Chief Librarian, for his continuous support. He is also pay thanks to Dr. Mumtaz Ali Anwar, Madam Umera Shah, Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, Abid Ali Gill, Haroon Usmani, Dr. Khalid Mahmood and all the senior colleagues for their guidance throughout the professional career. cellor in his address expressed the importance of library professionals in educational institutions. He said no active research can be done without the librarians productive input to the researchers and the modern nations have reached this stage by preserving the knowledge and its true utilizations in every field of life. He told that our future was bright when we were linked with knowledge. It is need to revive our glorious past. He gave examples of modern western world that they are making progress due to their research and their libraries are fully functional in promoting research culture. When the Muslims were associated to knowledge and research they produced eminent scholars who set trends and became the torch bearers of literature, science and technology. It is the need of the time to revive our ancestral culture to come out from slumber and play our role in the society of modern world. He wished that the central library building must be enhanced and 3rd floor should be constructed for providing more space to the researchers and students and for housing more books, journals and other reading material. While answering the question about the Professionals pay scale he told the body to move their written application to the senate of the university and he will discuss it in the senate of the university. The next session was of PULISAA General Body meeting. The Patron of the body Dr. Kanwal Amin chaired this session. The constitution of the PULISAA was discussed in detail in this session and answered many questions regarding constitution raised by

PULISAA general body. The constitution committee was comprisd on Chaudhary Muhammad Hanif, Mr. Abid Ali Gill, Muhammad Shahid Soroya, Madam Bushra Almas Jaswal, Dr. Mumtaz Ali Anwar, Khalid Mehmood and Afzal Haq Qurshi. Dr. Khalid Mehmood informed about the working sessions of the committee for drafting the PULISAA constitution. He thanked to Dr. Mumtaz A. Anwar and other members of the constitution committee who made their contribution in drafting the constitution. In the general body meeting PULISAA constitution was unanimously approved and this session was concluded on approval of the constitution. Professor Dr. Mumtaz Anwar very dynamic and learned scholar was awarded with the grace of the oldest Alumni of the department of Library and Information Science University of the Punjab.

Dr. Farzana Shafiq:

A role model for youngsters
A man of courage is also full of faith. (Cisero) Dr. Farzana Shafique is very renowned personality in the profession of Library & Information Science. Through her excellent academic and professional career, she proved herself as courageous and ambitious personality. She is amongst those few professionals who contributed a lot within a short span of time. She is an excellent model for the youngsters who want to see fruits of their efforts within short time. A Good student always conquers the highest peak of progress. Before screening her personality as a good student, it seems necessary to describe traits of a good student. The student who is sincere in studies, honest in thoughts & actions; obedient to his parents & teachers, disciplined in habits is considered a good one. Dr. Farzana Shafique as a student fulfill all these standards. She completed her MLIS from the University of the Punjab with a prominent CGPA of 3.61. She earned a lot of admiration from her teachers during studies. Even her teachers used to call her Madam in the class. After MLIS, she decided to continue her studies and got admission in M. Phil leading to Ph. D program and completed her doctorate in 2010 with remarkable CGPA of 3.95. Before completing her Ph.D. she selected and joined Islamia University of Bahawalpur as a Lecturer & this is her present assignment. She completed her Ph.D. degree requirements in 2011. In Islamia University of Bahawalpur, she contributed for designing of the curriculum of Masters and M. Phil Programs. She also served in Department of Library & Information Science, University of the Punjab as a visiting faculty member. Miss Farzanas research profile shows her dedication towards this profession. She is author of one book and 122 articles and research papers. These publications have a national and international repute having good impact factor. She has honor to win the award of best paper of year 2007 and this was the only one paper that was selected from the whole Asia. She is HEC approved Ph.D supervisor and supervised 11 students in the conduction of their research theses till date. Her Ph.D. research topic was: Model information system for educational administration in Pakistan. She got scholarship for scientific courses (Twice). She remained chief editor of info@PULISAA for two year presently rendering her services as deputy editor of IUB journal of science & humanities. She has been gifted with good communication skills. She demonstrated these skills on different steps of life. As a student while presenting her assignments, as a School administrator, as a teacher in class, as a resource person in different workshops and conferences she exposed this quality. She has a great love for Islam & its teachings. She wears veil. Some people object that veil is a hurdle in the way of progress. But she proved that this myth is totally wrong. She has degree of Darsee Nizami, a study curriculum used in a large portion of Islamic religious school in South Asia. She is a guiding star for us. In the end, I pray may Allah Almighty accept all her efforts and give her best reward for her pains she took in the way of life, in this world and the world hereafter.

Muhammad Shahid Soroya (President) Regional Librarian, Allama Iqbal Open University, Lahore shahidsoroya@yahoo.com Mr. Shahid is proactive fellow, flexible in his approach and quite conscientious LIS professional who has won many achievements at the early stage of his career, received PAM International Membership Award in SLA annual conference in Denver, USA, 2007. He is moderator and founder of Pakistan Librarians Welfare Organization, which evolved as LIS community voice for PLA revival. PLWO is a body of young librarians playing very active role for the betterment of LIS profession and professionals. He has successfully lead the team in organizing many training workshops, seminars and conferences. Mr. Shahid Soroya has also served in Pakistan Library Association (Punjab) against the office of Treasurer for the period of 2009-2011. He also contributed as Chairman, Image Building and PR Committee, PLA (Punjab) by organizing TV Talk Shows, Newspapers coverage and seminars to uplift the image of library community. He is coordinating MLIS Programme at AIOU, Regional Campus, Lahore. He is also teaching in M.Phil Library Science Programme as visiting faculty member at Minhaj University, Lahore.

Muhammad Ashraf Shakoori (Vice President) He is an exceptionally energetic, learned and friendly young man who did his MLIS from University of the Punjab in 2003. He has proved his potential and leadership qualities while working a number of prestigious institutions i.e. Gujrat Law College, Iqra University, City School, Beaconhouse and presently he is rendering his services Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). He possesses highly professional approach and is very ambitious to change the status quo for the great interest of every individual. His genius, creativity and ambition are the harbingers of an unprecedented revival.

Dr. Nosheen Fatima Warraich (Secretary)

Dr. Nosheen did her graduation from Lahore College for Women, Lahore in 1999 and MLIS from Department of LIS University of the Punjab 2001. She joined the first badge of M.Phil leading to Ph.D. programme in DLIS in 2005. She did her Ph.D. in July 2011 and has the honour to be the first Ph.D. of the regular Ph.D. programme of DLIS. She has 15 research papers in national & international journals and has 6 conference papers on her credit, among them 3 were in IFLA. She is the recipient of Infoshare award of ASIST ( American Society of Information Science and Technology) twice for the year of 2010 and 2011. She started her career as librarian from Lahore College for Women University after that she joined PU

library in 2002. Now she is working as Assistant Professor tenure track in the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), University of Punjab.

Mr. Waris Ali Arsalan (Joint Secretary)

Waris Ali Arslan working as Incharge Library Information services at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology Sahiwal Since June 1, 2011. Prior to this appointment he has working experience in social sector as librarian at Shirkat Gah Women Resource Centre. He has worked there for more than ten years, contributed in their research activities and publications. He started his maiden job with Centre for Information Technology Lahore in 2000 and remained on this post for about a year. Mr. Ghulam Yasin Malik (Treasurer) Mr. Ghulam Yasin Malik is working as librarian at Provincial Assembly of Punjab, Pakistan. He did Masters in Library Science from the University of the Punjab 20042006. As Executive Member of the PLA Punjab Branch, he actively contributed in organizing the PLA International Golden Jubilee Conference held 28-29 November 2007. At the end of that conference he was awarded a certificate and a shield as acknowledgement of his services. He attended workshops and seminars at national and international levels. He also attended 26th IFLA PreConference of Library & Research Services for Parliament from 6th to 8th August, 2010 at Swedish Riksdag in Stockholm, Sweden and 76th IFLA General Conference and Assembly on Open Access To Knowledge-Promoting Sustainable Progress from 10th to 15th August 2010 at Gothenburg, Sweden. Apart from Sweden, he also visited Saudi Arabia, Norway and Germany. He served PULISAA as Joint Secretary and Acting Secretary from 15-01-2011 to date and played very active role. The Punjab Assembly Library is the largest Parliamentary Library of the country with precious and rare legislative books and records. In his efforts in development of libraries in the province and attracting people to the libraries he has played a pivotal role in introducing the Punjab Public Library Act. From the platform of the Punjab Assembly he struggled for LIS and for filling of library vacancies in schools and colleges of the province. He has completed his Masters and PhD studies in 1998 and 2011 respectively, from the same university. He has over 13 years of experience in managing university libraries and information settings of national and international organizations e.g. GC University Lahore, National Textile University Faisalabad, International Islamic University Islamabad, Development Alternative Inc. USA and International Relief & Development Inc. USA. Dr. Rafiq has also some international awards on his credentials i.e. The Jay Jordan IFLA-OCLC Early career Development Fellowship in 2004; The Winner of 2009 International Research Paper Contest of American Society of Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T); and Associate to Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, USA. Mr. Muhammad Asif Munir (Executive Member) He is currently working as Deputy Manager Reference, Research & Readers Services at Lahore University of Management Sciences Library. He has completed his M. Phil. from University of the Punjab, Lahore. He has more than 10 years of working experience in diverse organizations. Mr. Asif has also served Pakistan Library Association in different capacities. He has honour to be elected unopposed Treasurer in median PULISAA executive council. Mr. Asif has conducted various trainings online searching skills, citation management tools, and using Google applications for research.
Mr. Akhtar Naseer Warraich (Executive Member) Akhtar Naseer Warraich joined DLIS in October 1976 (Diploma Class) and did master in 1979. He joined Govt. College of Science, Wahdat Road Lahore as librarian on April 1st , 1980 and still working there. He remained General Secretary, Punjab College Library Association (PCLA) for two consecutive sessions (4 years) and senior Vice President of PCLA for next two years (one session). Mr. Muhammad Naushad Ghazanfar (Executive Member) Muhammad Naushad presently, is student of M.Phil In LIS at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. He got Bachelor of Library and Information Science degree from University of Sindh Jamshoro, and completed his MLISc from University of the Punjab in 1991. He has vast experience of Professional librarianship. Presently he is serving in Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan as Deputy Librarian. He is also coauthor of a book,"Library and Automation Primer" Mr. Naushad also writes columns on different topics and they published in National Newspapers from time to time. The Neglected Front-Fighters

Whatever the field is, especially the service oriented professions, the front line staff are well equipped with training, techniques and knowledge about their organizational priorities, customer value and their everyday duties. Yet in the field of librarianship, these front line staff is usually untrained and neither are they trained by librarians or library administrators. Librarianship is a services oriented profession, and basic services are often provided at the circulation desk in majority of the libraries. And the staff sitting over the circulation desk are often not well versed with the communication techniques, services providing spirit and satisfying manners. If we say that the first impression is the last, than the first impression of the library is its beauty in structure, facilities and the most important, front desk staff. But often library non professional staff is not very well aware of the communication skills, presentation skills, and logical understanding skills. The education improves the quality of human thinking and observation. Unluckily due to less literacy rate, often less educated person are appointed at non professional posts. They play an important role in the image building of a library, so they should be trained. Some training programs can be organized to improve their personality, attitude and efficiency. We often observe the sales boys and sales girls are too polite and well-mannered. And they are so, because they know the value of the customers. Then why not the non professional staff in the library? The non-professional staff needs to be aware of the customer value. And, the problem is that they even dont have sense of improvement. In my personal experiences, they are unaware of the theory that they can improve the image of the library. The services are not often up to the mark of customer and librarians satisfaction and the solution is improvement in the service quality. We need basically to improve the service quality. The librarians are the only person, who can mentor and guide these non-professional staff for the library image betterment and professional advancement. Service quality can be improved through the guidelines given below. to some extent to mentor them, to guide them towards better services.

1-Front desk should be observed. A recording camera can be placed. The fear of recording and observation will increase the level of their services according to the instructions given by the librarian. 2-Some training sessions by the librarians should be organized. In those sessions, librarians can emphasize on - How to warmly welcome a user. The way a client is being welcomed in the library, totally changes the perception about the library. - In what manners, a male client and a female client should be welcomed, guided and treated. - Some basic personal appearance guidelines for example how to dress and how to sit on circulation desk. - How to tackle an unwanted situation. - Instructions can be given on how to market fresh arrivals and other library material. In short, the non professional staff needs mentoring in many aspects. And it is the responsibility of the librarian

INSTANT MESSAGING (IM), consists of sending real -time messages to another Internet user, much like text messaging on a cell phone; most popular among younger generations, IM is also commonly used in the workforce as a quick way for employees to communicate with each other. IM is comparable to chatting in a private chat room, but instead of anyone being able to join the conversation, IM includes only people whom the user has invited. Users can create a list to keep track of welcome guests, and IM sends an alert that pops up on the computer screen when a new message is received. To use instant messaging, it is necessary to open an account with an IM program, most of which are free; many programs require users to create a screen name so that the user can be identified by others. There are some risks affiliated with IM such as a computer catching a virus, personal information being stolen, or sex predators seeking victims; however, these risks can be reduced or avoided entirely when the proper precautions are followed. How to IM In order to send and receive instant messages, a user must sign-up for an IM account. There are several web -based programs online that offer free IM accounts. When choosing a program, keep in mind that some are compatible with each other, while others are not; this is important as users will want to choose programs that are compatible with those whom they will be communicating. Most, if not all, programs require users to create a user name that will be an identification tag for sending and receiving messages, and additional personal information can be added if the user so wishes. Once the account is established, users should tell friends, family, and coworkers their new screen name so that the IM can begin.

Benefits of IM Instant messaging is more private than a typical chat room, because the user must invite others to join, as opposed to chat rooms where anyone is welcome to join the conversation. IM is a much faster and simpler way to communicate than using email because message is sent immediately and the receive does not have to log in to read it. Since instant messaging allows users to communicate in real-time, users can respond quickly to questions or comments. Instant messaging is a great way to stay in touch with family members and friends while saving money on long distance phone bills. Risks of IM As with any online activity, caution should be exercised with messaging. It is not a good idea to add people to the invite list unless the user knows something about them. Children should be supervised carefully when instant messaging and should never add someone to their list or agree to be added to anyone else's list without approval from their legal guardian. Predators have been known to use instant messaging as well as chat rooms to seek out victims, so while IM may seem safer, it is not without risks. It is also possible to obtain viruses, worms, and Trojan horses through messaging, so care should be taken when accepting any files. Also, don't type anything that shouldn't be shared with others, since instant messages can be captured and the text can be saved and passed on.
