FIRST LOOP With 7mm needles and waste yarn, cast on 63 sts and p 1 row. Break off waste yarn and join in main yarn. Now work in patt as follows: Row 1 (RS) P3, [k5, p1, k6, p3, k6, p1, k5, p3] twice. Row 2 K3, [p5, k1, p6, k3, p6, k1, p5, k3] twice. Row 3 P3, [k5, p1, C6B, p3, C6F, p1, k5, p3] twice. Row 4 As row 2. Rows 5 to 8 As rows 1 to 4. Rows 9 and 10 As rows 1 and 2. Row 11 P3, [C12F, p3, C12B, p3] twice. Row 12 K3, [p6, k1, p5, k3, p5, k1, p6, k3] twice. Row 13 P3, [k6, p1, k5, p3, k5, p1, k6, p3] twice. Row 14 As row 12. Row 15 P3, [C6F, p1, k5, p3, k5, p1, C6B, p3] twice. Row 16 As row 12. Rows 17 to 28 As rows 13 to 16, 3 times. Rows 29 and 30 As rows 13 and 14. Row 31 P3, [C12B, p3, C12F, p3] twice. Row 32 As row 2. Rows 33 to 40 As rows 1 to 4, twice. These 40 rows form patt. Rep last 40 rows 4(5) times more, ending with RS facing for next row. (Strip should measure approximately 125(150)cm.) Unravel waste yarn and slip the 63 sts of the rst row in main yarn onto a spare needle. Holding both sets of 63 sts together with RS facing (and ensuring strip is not twisted) cast off both sets of sts tog, taking one st from front needle tog with corresponding st from back needle.

SECOND LOOP With 7mm needles and waste yarn cast on 60 sts. Row 1 (WS) Purl. Break off waste yarn and join in main yarn. Now work in patt as follows: Row 1 (RS) P3, [k6, p2] 7 times, p1. Row 2 K3, [p6, k2] 7 times, k1. Row 3 P3, [C6B, p2, C6F, p2] 3 times, C6B, p3. Row 4 As row 2. These 4 rows form the patt. Cont in patt until second loop measures same as rst loop, ending after patt row 4 and with RS facing for next row. Unravel waste yarn and slip the 60 sts of the rst row in main yarn onto a spare needle. Slip one end of this loop through centre of rst loop (so resulting joined loops will be interlocked together) and, holding both sets of 60 sts tog with RS facing (and ensuring this strip is not twisted), cast off both sets of sts tog, taking one st from front needle tog with corresponding st from back needle. TO MAKE UP Do not press. Lay joined loops at to form an X shape. Mark the 2 adjacent row-end edges of the 2 loops at the top of the X these are the upper edges. Upper borders (both alike) With RS facing and 6mm circular needle, beg and ending at seam joining ends of strip, pick up and k120(144) sts evenly along entire marked row-end edge of one loop. Round 1 (RS) [K2, p2] to end. This round forms rib. Work in rib for a further 9 rounds. Cast off in rib. Lower borders (both alike) With RS facing and 6mm circular needle, beg and ending at seam joining ends of strip, pick up and knit 180(216) sts evenly along entire free row-end edge of one loop. Work in rib as given for upper border for 10 rounds. Cast off in rib. Taken from Rowan Knitting and Crochet Magazine 48, 11.50
