Respect Life
You Shall Be Like Gods This original temptation, outlined in the first reading, was a promise that what was right and what was wrong would be up to us; that we could write our own moral law. Thats what the tree of the knowledge of good and evil meant, and why Adam and Eve couldnt eat from it. We are all called to know good from evil, but not to decide it. To think we decide it is the error of the pro-choice mindset. Its all up to me and my choice, even if it means killing a baby. In the culture of life, on the other hand, we live in the freedom of the children of God, and pattern our lives on the obedience of Jesus that leads to life eternal.

Lenten Regulations for Fasting and Abstinence

The annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises. (Ceremonial of Bishops, 249). REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and Good Friday, April 18, 2014, are days for fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. The following may be reproduced in parish bulletins for the purpose of reminding the faithful of the regulations for fast and abstinence: ASH WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2014, and GOOD FRIDAY, April 18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence. FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or renewal of baptism at Easter.

Save the Date for the Lenten Mission

The Parish Mission will begin on the weekend of March 22 and 23 at all the English masses and will continue weekdays at 7:00pm until Wednesday, March 26. The retreat master will be Father Joseph Noonan who is a former associate pastor at ST. Francis Borgia, and currently the pastor of St. Damien in Oak Forest. Ordained in 1995, he previously served as Archdiocesan Vocation Director. Please pray for Fr. Joe so he can help us renew our hearts and lives.

From the Pastors Desk

Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. I think that these words from todays Gospel can be a guide and a signpost for our Lenten journey, which we have been started on Ash Wednesday. I will never forget my experience of the first Ash Wednesday that I have spent in Chicago at Holy Innocents Parish. The faint hands from the distribution of ashes to thousands of foreheads, the tired and misinterpreting lips from the repetition of the same formula, and joyful beating heart from seeing a great example of faith and conversion. Unfortunately, throughout the Lenten season, never again did I see these faithful members, who most likely began and ended Lent with Ash Wednesday. Even though, the ashes that we receive on Ash Wednesday are blessed, they will not bring us miraculous changes or grant us salvation. The ashes are only a sign and a call to conversion, which we have to accomplish on our own. I would like to encourage you to participate in the Lenten Services and Retreat. Each year, on this second Sunday of Lent, we hear the story of the Transfiguration. The shining splendor of the Lord lights our way as we continue our Lenten journey of conversion. Like Peter, we would like to remain on the mountain. Yet we are called to encounter the Lord again and again as we slowly move with him to Calvary. In the call of Abram, which we hear todays first reading, God blesses Abram abundantly. Abram left everything familiar behind, and went as the Lord God directed him. On this second Sunday of Lent, we might ask ourselves where God is calling us. The Gospel account of the Transfiguration might provide the answer. There we are given a glimpse of the glory that awaits the Lord at his resurrection. As baptized believers, we share in the promise of a shared resurrection. As Easter approaches, let us keep our eyes fixed on both the mountain of transfiguration and Calvarys hill as we continue to purify our minds and hearts. Change my heart, O God Make it ever true Change my heart, O God May I be like You. You are the potter I am the clay Mold me and make me This is what I pray.

Feed the Hungry

The Parish Pastoral Council is sponsoring a "FEED THE HUNGRY" food drive on the weekend of March 22nd and 23rd. All are encouraged to participate by donating non perishable foods in the "FEED THE HUNGRY" boxes that will be in the back of the church on that weekend only. The food will be given to the St. Cyprian Ecumenical Food Pantry for distribution to the people in our community that are in need of assistance. Thank you and God bless you.
