SOURCE APPROVAL
The contractor shall submit to the Engineer for his review and full detail of the proposed sources of aggregates. These Sources of aggregate supply shall be regularly and thoroughly investigated to ensure that the quality of the material supplied is satisfactory and that it does not deteriorated during the entire performance period of the project. Predefined sources should be specified in Special Provision of Contract Documents.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA / QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

Aggregates which shall be obtained from the approved source, shall comply with the requirements of BS 882 and/or as specified here under: a. b. c. d. e. Contractor shall satisfy the Engineer that aggregates to be supplied will not give rise to alkali aggregate reaction with the cement. Mineralogical tests are to be carried out as instructed by the Engineer. No aggregate deliveries shall be made to the Site until the Engineer has approved the samples as complying with this specification. Samples of aggregates shall be tested in accordance with the requirements of B.S 812. All Fine aggregates shall be clean and free from clay, loam, silt and other deleterious substances. The amount of deleterious substances in fine aggregate shall not exceed the limits as specified in ASTM C 33 table 1. If required, the Engineer reserves the right to have them washed by the Contractor at no additional expense. Fine aggregate shall be hard coarse sand, crushed stone or gravel screenings and shall conform to requirements of PS 243 and/or BS 882 and/or ASTM C 33. Only fine aggregate of grading zones 1 to 3 (BS 882) shall be used. Fine aggregates, except otherwise specified or directed by the Engineer, shall be graded within the following limits: For Concrete as per ASTM C-33: Sieve (Specification E 11) 9.5-mm (38-in.) 4.75-mm (No. 4) 2.36-mm (No. 8) 1.18-mm (No. 16) 600-m (No. 30) 300-m (No. 50) 150-m (No. 100) Percent Passing 100 95 to 100 80 to 100 50 to 85 25 to 60 5 to 30 0 to 10

PART 030510

FINE AGGREGATES

Fine aggregate shall be free of injurious amounts of organic impurities. Except as herein provided, aggregates subjected to the test for organic impurities and producing a color darker than the standard shall be rejected. Use of a fine aggregate failing in the test is not prohibited, provided that, when tested for the effect of organic impurities on strength of mortar, the relative strength at 7 days, calculated in accordance with Test Method C 87, is not less than 95 %. Fine aggregate for use in concrete that will subject to wetting, extended exposure to humid atmosphere, or contact with moist ground shall not contain any materials that are deleteriously reactive with the alkalies in the cement in an amount sufficient to cause excessive expansion of mortar or concrete, except that if such materials are present in injurious amounts, use of the fine aggregate is not prohibited when used with a cement containing less than 0.60 % alkalies calculated as sodium oxide equivalent (Na2O + 0.658K2O) or with the addition of a material that has been shown to prevent harmful expansion due to the alkali-aggregate reaction.

SUBMITTALAND SAMPLING
5.1 5.2 The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer for his review and approval, all data as specified in BS 812. The contractor shall provide samples of aggregates to the Engineer in accordance with the requirement of B.S 812 part 101, Guide to sampling and testing of aggregate, or other relevant standards for testing at least to week before beginning deliveries to the site. All samples shall be taken in presence of the Engineer.

TESTING OF MATERIAL
Quality Control tests, their frequency and relevant standards shall be as per the following Table 1. TABLE 1 FREQUENCY OF TEST FOR FINE AGGREGATES

DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

Contractor shall provide proper means of storing aggregate at each point where Mortar is made such that: a. Each nominal size of coarse aggregate and the fine aggregate shall be kept Separated at all times. Aggregates shall not be stored on muddy ground or where they are likely to become dirty or contaminated. Contamination of the aggregates by the ground or other foreign matter shall be effectively prevented at all times. Each heap of aggregate shall be capable of draining freely. Storage shall be such as to prevent segregation. Stockpiles shall be on hard and clean surfaces with not more than 5% slope. Coarse and fine aggregates shall be delivered and stored separately at site.

DEFINITION
9.1 Aggregate A granular material obtained by processing natural materials. 9.2 Fine Aggregate Aggregate mainly passed from 5.0 mm BS 410 test sieve and containing not finer material than is permitted for the various works as required. 9.3 Sand Fine aggregate resulting from natural disintegration and abrasion of rock or processing of completely friable sandstone. Sand particles in size normally varies 0.074 mm to 4.76 mm. (Passing through US Standard sieve No. 4 and retained on Sieve No. 200).
