Brush Stroke Still-Life

Accommodations, Modifications, and or pertinent IEP Goals: Central Focus: Practice painting in still life and create a loose brush stroke painting, use complimentary colors to create shadows and highlights. Learning Objectives: Students will be able toRecognize shapes in a still life and draw and paint them in simple form. Students will be able toDemonstrate understanding of complimentary color mixing by creating shadows using complimentary color mixing. Students will be able to Paint using various oil techniques. Materials Needed: Projector or Smartboard for Powerpoint Presentation Still life set up. Light Oil paints

Sequence of Instruction (Time needed + Step by Step Procedures): Explain that this will be a still life painting, emphasizing elements of shape and color. Show artists examples.Van Gogh Demonstrate sketching out large shapes of still life. Discuss complimentary colors on color wheel. Show video on broken color. Set up a small, simple, still-life with limited colors. Draw a loose sketch of the still life, focusing on basic shapes-not detail. Block in colors. Continue to layer on colors Use COMPLIMENTARY COLORS to shade. Add tints and shades of colors, as well as colors mixed with small bits of other colors (like video).

Assessment: Create a painting based off of a still life using the large brush stroke and broken color techniques.

Elements & Principles- Focus on the element of shape; find basic shapes in the still life and depict them in the painting. Mix colors to match the still life and use the complimentary colors to create shadows. Creativity and Originality-Create an interesting still life and use brush strokes to create an original composition. Effort- Think of an interesting still life and think through color combinations. Works hard throughout the process and meets deadlines. Craftsmanship- Match colors in still life on canvas and craft interesting brush strokes. Attitude-Work consistently, clean up, go beyond expectations.
