FITNESS
General fitness improves not just your physical ability to survive a physical fight, but also helps you avoid danger by increasing alertness. Getting fit could mean a longer life for more reasons than you think.
Brace yourself. The dog should latch onto your protected arm, and it will hurt. Do not pull back -- always push into bites, be they animal or human. If you have a light weapon (or none at all), strike downward at the eyes. If you have a pocket knife, slash upward at the throat and chest of the animal from beneath. If you are yanked from your feet and overwhelmed by multiple dogs, curl into a ball to protect vital areas. Pull your knees to your chest, interlace your fingers behind your neck, pinch your elbows together, play dead, and wait for help.
CAUTION
Fighting skills must be regularly practiced to become habit. The less you practice the more unlikely it is that you will react effectively when threatened. If you want to learn practical physical self defense skills, take up a martial art with lots of phys-ed and at least moderate contact.
DISCLAIMER
Use at your own risk. The authors accept no responsibility for what happens to you if you use or dont use the information in this pamphlet. Life is unpredictable and unfair. Get used to it.
1. If you have a bad feeling about a person or a place dont ignore it. 2. Do not travel through an area by car or bus that you would not walk through. 3. Maintain your vehicle properly. Change the oil, fill the tank, inflate the tires, etc. 4. If you own a cell-phone, keep it on and charged. 5. Have the keys to your vehicle in your hand when you exit a building and your house keys in hand when you arrive home. 6. Keep your doors and windows locked -- all of them, all the time, in the car and at home, day and night.

POLICE DOGS
K9 dogs are extremely fast, strong, and well trained. Hardcore felons lay down their guns when faced with K9s. If a K9 officers human partner gives instructions follow them. If you get no instructions, curl into a ball to protect your vital areas. Pull your knees to your chest, interlace your fingers behind your neck, pinch your elbows together, and wait for the halt order. Hopefully the stitches wont be too bad.
7. Consider carefully before using alcohol and drugs. Know who you will be with, where you will be, how you will get home, etc. 8. Before you leave make sure that someone knows where you are going and when to expect you back.

CROWD CONTROL
If youre caught in an unruly mob lets say your group is panicked by an attack, theres a fire in the building, etc. keep these things in mind: 1. Most people who are seriously injured or killed in crowd situations are trampled. Keep your feet by lowering your center of gravity. Your knees should be flexed and your feet at least a shoulders width apart. Stay as calm as possible. The flow at the center of large stream of people moves faster than the edges. If you like where the crowd is going, fine. If not, you have to get to the edge. Do not move directly against the crowd, or even perpendicular to it. Exiting a crowd is like exiting a highway. Move like a vehicle on an off-ramp, in a gentle arc out and away. If you need shelter from the press of bodies, work your way to the outside slowly and seek a wall, barricade, or doorway. If you are injured and cannot stand, tuck into a ball and cover your head with your arms. If a friend is injured and unable to stand, drag, urge, limp, or pull him/her to a wall or barricade. Place him or her parallel to the wall at the base. Even when people walk with shoulders touching a wall their feet are a foot away from it. There should just enough room to avoid being trampled there.

on the defensive and weakens your techniques). If your attacker is armed, stay back and try to (a) interpose obstacles like barricades, cars, sofas, and chairs, and (b) arm yourself (preferably with something longer than your attackers weapon).
3. Stay low.
Keep your center of gravity low and strikes close to your body. Dont stand tall and swing wide looping blows toward your attacker. Bend your knees a little, and strike out with punches that are short and straight.
Prevent Escalation
If a confrontation can't be avoided, prevent escalation. Everybody says you should ignore shouts and insults. Dont ignore them just dont react to them. People who shout insults are thinking violent thoughts. Be aware and plan ahead. A shove or a challenge is nothing. Dont be concerned with your ego, or with being perceived as a coward. You have only limited influence over the thoughts and actions of others. Be concerned instead with the things you can control your actions. Be as gentle as possible. Shouting, posturing, and shoving are signs that a person is picking a fight. Dont give them what they want. Do everything you can to diffuse the situation. Try and calm them with body language. hands up about chest height, adopt a soothing tone, and suggest that everyone just settle down. If you cant calm down a person who is losing control, or if you feel your own anger rising, consider exiting the area before things get completely out of hand. You must be able to recognize when danger is approaching, and the only way to do that is to practice.
Run Away
Running away is the best self defense technique there is. But when you do: Dont turn your back until you are sure that you have at least a 10 second lead (especially if your attacker is armed). As soon as you stop to pass through a door, enter your car, etc., youll be overtaken from behind. Run in a straight line. If you run zigzag, a pursuer running straight will catch you.
Here are some exercises that will encourage a good self defense mindset. Work these exercises often.
1. Next time youre in a crowd, select a person at random and imagine what you would do if he or she attacked you. 2. Next time youre alone on the street, imagine what you would do if a van pulled up and the driver pointed a gun at you and ordered you inside. 3. While at a public meeting or other function, imagine what you would do if a member of the crowd became belligerent. 4. The next time youre driving at night, imagine what you would do if your car broke down. 5. The next time youre walking alone, imagine what you would do if you sensed someone following you. 6. The next time you are at a rally or protest, imagine what you would do if an opposing group became violent and rushed your group. 7. Make up some of your own and think them through in detail.
