Solution to QUIZ #1
ENCE 355 Introduction to Structural Design

NAME:______________________

For the reinforced concrete beam cross section shown in the figure,
determine
1- The amount of steel required to create the balanced condition.
2- Whether this beam is balanced, underreinforced, or
overreinforced? Why?
3- The practical moment capacity Mn of the beam according
d = 20
to the ACI Code.
Use fy = 40,000 psi for steel and f c = 3,000 psi for concrete.

b = 11

**** SOLUTION ****

1- Amount of Steel:

max 0.0278
=
= 0.03707
0.75
0.75
Hence, Steel required for balanced condition = Asb = b bd = 0.03707(11)(20 ) = 8.16 in 2
From Table 2, max = 0.0278, therefore, b =

(Note: b can also be obtained using b =

0.85 f c1 87,000
f + 87,000
fy
y

2- The Condition of the Beam:

From Table 1, the area for one #10 bar = 1.27 in2
Therefore, As = 6 1.27 = 7.62 in2
The beam is underreinforced because
As = 7.62 in 2 < As b = 8.16 in 2

) (

3- Practical moment capacity of the beam:

According to the ACI Code, the practical moment capacity Mn of the beam should be
determined based on As,max, and not As = 7.62 in2. Therefore,
As ,max = max bd = 0.0278(11)(20 ) = 6.12 in 2
6.12(40 )
= 8.73 in.
0.85 f cb 0.85(3)(11)
a
8.73
= 15.64 in.
Z = 20 = 20
2
2
M n = (0.90 )(As ,max f y Z ) = 0.9(6.12 )(40 )(15.64 ) = 3,445.8 in - kips = 287 ft - kips
