SINTEF Petroleum Research is a Norwegian company specializing in petroleum research in exploration and production technology. Our
activities are financed mainly through contract research and public research funding. The main clients are oil companies and service
companies. SINTEF Petroleum Research collaborates closely with other institutes within the SINTEF Group and several universities. Our
offices are located in Trondheim, Bergen, Stavanger and Houston.
The SINTEF Petroleum Research staff includes about 118 employees, including researchers, engineers, technical support and
administration. Some 48 % of the scientific staff hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
SINTEF Petroleum Research is associated with SINTEF Energy Research under the name of SINTEF Petroleum and Energy.

The SINTEF Group is the largest independent research institution in Scandinavia. Our vision is Technology for a better society. We aim
to contribute to growth in value creation, improved quality of life and a sustainable development through research and knowledge.
At the turn of the year, SINTEF had 2040 employees. Our colleagues come from 55 different countries, and in 2007 they generated new
knowledge to the value of NOK 2.3 billion.
More than 90 percent of our earnings come from contracts for industry and the public sector, and from project grants from the Research Council
of Norway. Our basic grant from the Research Council accounts for around eight percent of the total.

Phase behaviour
Phase behaviour of hydrocarbon systems has a central
place in the understanding of oil recovery process,
along with the fluid flow properties. The volumes and
composition of liquid and gas at different temperature
and pressure affect hydrocarbon recovery through
miscibility, liquid dropout in condensates, phase
volumes, etc. Also solid hydrocarbon phases, such as
asphaltenes and waxes, may influence oil recovery
through well productivity and separation processes.

Reservoir engineering is based on the
understanding of fluid flow in porous media. The
reservoir technology department provides data
on permeability, porosity, end point saturation,
and relative permeability for gas, water, and oil,
for a range of process conditions. It is our aim
to produce reliable data with high quality core
flooding equipment, using carefully designed
experimental procedures.

Reservoir simulation
Modelling of the physical phenomena involved during flow in porous
media is essential for the understanding of reservoir processes. A
number of methods and tools are used for this purpose, varying
from commercial reservoir simulators to specially developed
and dedicated models.
