General Introduction - Laboratory Safety

CHEMISTRY 2000
General Introduction This manual provides the necessary information for the Chemistry 2000 laboratory course. If you, at any time, have doubts as to what is required during an experimental procedure or what is required for a report, contact one of the laboratory instructors. John Eng Wayne Lippa Laboratory Safety The laboratory experiments selected for this manual have been chosen with student safety as the primary concern. Students with a common sense approach should encounter few potential hazards. Students should treat all chemicals as potentially dangerous. An example of a specific precaution as presented in the laboratory manual is illustrated below. Safety Note: Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) causes severe burns. extreme care and avoid inhalation of the vapors. Clean up spills with copious amounts of water. Please take special precaution when you encounter similar safety notes. Here are a few common sense safety rules which should be followed while in the laboratory. 1. Think, before you act. INSTRUCTOR. If you are uncertain as to the correct procedure, ASK your

Laboratory coats and safety glasses are to be worn at all times in the laboratory. [University regulations.] Contact lens are particularly dangerous and should not be worn in the laboratory. Fire extinguishers are located near the exits of the laboratory; know their location and use. An overhead safety shower is located in the front corner of the laboratory and two pull out safety showers are located on the center bench. A first aid kit is located in the prep room [E715]; report all injuries to the instructor as soon as possible.

To avoid possible ingestion of chemicals, eating or smoking in the laboratory is not permitted. Also, for your own safety never taste chemicals or solutions. Only the experiments found in the manual are permitted to be carried out in the laboratory. Fume hoods are located at the sides of each laboratory. Carry out all procedures that produce toxic or foul smelling fumes in these hoods. Concentrated acid and base bottles are located in the fume hoods. Please leave the bottles in the hood. If you require these concentrated solutions carry a container to the hood and pour out the amount required. This method reduces the danger that individuals may spill large quantities of concentrated acid or base in the work area. When proceeding to dilute concentrated acids or bases, always ADD the concentrated acid or base TO water NEVER the reverse. Stirring the solution with a glass stirring rod during the addition of the acid or base will also reduce the chances of the solution splattering out of the container. The dilution of concentrated sulfuric acid is extremely exothermic (generates heat); therefore, be very careful during the dilution of this acid. To reduce the chances of ruining unneeded textbooks and clothing, place these textbooks on the shelves located above the side benches and clothing on the coat hooks at the back of the laboratory. Disposal of all solid material (chemical or paper) should be carried out by placing this type of material in the waste crocks provided. Disposal of liquids (solvents, excess chemical solutions etc.) should be carried out by pouring the liquids into the disposal container or if the liquids are environmentally safe down the sink drain and then rinsed down with plenty of cold water. If you are in doubt as to the safety of any solution, ASK your instructor. To avoid problems in the laboratory always read the label on chemical bottles twice. If you are uncertain check the experimental procedure or ask the instructor. To reduce waste avoid taking an excess of reagent. If you do happen to measure out too much ask others in the laboratory if they can use the reagent. To ensure the purity of chemical reagents never pour excess reagents back into the bottles. Ask others if they can use the material or dispose of the material in the correct manner.

Please note a penalty will be charged to the student(s) or the entire class for the improper disposal of glassware. There is a designated broken glass container in each of the lab area. To avoid probable injury from the use of cracked or broken glassware, replace any cracked or broken glassware immediately and approach your instructor for a replacement. Keep your work area clean and free of extra glassware and apparatus. When you are ready to leave the lab area be sure all utilities have been turned off. If corrosive chemicals come in contact with your skin as quickly as possible flood the contaminated area with copious amounts of water. The chemical storeroom is a controlled area for authorized persons only. If you require materials from this area, please ask your instructor.

As you can see from reading over of the above safety rules, common sense is the basic rule.

Laboratory Schedule A laboratory schedule can be downloaded from the class website and some will be made available during the first laboratory period. During the semester, if any changes in the schedule are necessary you will be notified in class. Laboratory Reports All experimental data should be recorded directly in ink on provided data sheets or in chemistry booklets available from the bookstore. Full reports should be typed or computer printed. Graphs should be on GOOD graph paper(available on the classes website) or computer generated. Data sheets for group experiments must include the names of all members of the group. All data sheets must be initialed by your instructor before you leave the lab area. Reports with data sheets NOT initialized will not be graded. Reports are normally due at the beginning of the lab period one week after the completion of the experimental work or as per the current laboratory schedule. Reports must contain the names of all individuals who are to receive credit. Reports will be accepted up to one day late with a deduction of 15% in the possible grade. Reports received later than one day late will be returned without being graded.

Reports should be submitted in the appropriate slot in the bookcase located in the aisle next to E-711. The bookcase slots are labeled with the section numbers, be sure your report enters the correct slot. Graded reports will normally be returned the following lab period. If you encounter any problems with your report (grade, question in regard to the written comments on the report etc.) ask your instructor for clarification. Make-up laboratory periods may be allowed if the student has a legitimate reason or the student makes prior arrangements with the instructor. Please keep in mind make-up labs may not always be possible even if the reported absence can be verified. If a student is absent due to illness a medical certificate is required. The laboratory grade will count for 25% of your Chemistry 2000 final grade. Therefore, if you have questions with regard to the laboratory experiments or with regard to results or written reports, ASK your instructor.

Quizzes At the beginning of the laboratory period a quiz may be given on the experiment or procedures you are about to perform or have recently completed.

Withdrawal from the Course If you are withdrawing from the course contact your instructor for the proper check out procedures. Your deposit will be refunded only when the check out procedure has been completed. Normally check out takes place during the last week of classes.
