After attending the seminar, I was really excited about all the upcoming speakers and their presentations.

I feel that the topic of the class A World in Crisis fits perfectly into the current time period. It seems that many parts of the world are experiencing turmoils that will potentially change the course of history, most notably the Arab pring. !owe"er, I was most interested in the presentations about the rising food demand and the rise of nuclear energy, especially the graph illustrating the change in energy sources o"er time. #eat consumption skyrocketing and renewable energy accounting for barely a sli"er of the energy source really highlight the sumptuous lifestyle of people, especially in Western countries, and the lack of regard to the conse$uences of that lifestyle. While we don%t necessarily feel any negati"e effects from our lifestyle, it is certainly causing a crisis in unde"eloped countries. &hese two topics reminded me of a "ideo called &he #iniature World which effecti"ely showed the se"erity of the crisis due to food and energy shortages in some parts of the world. 'ne of the thing that hit me the hardest was the fact that if a person had a fridge, a closet, a bed, and a roof o"er his head, he is richer than ()* of the world population. #ost people, including me, take those simple things for granted, not reali+ing that those would be extra"agant luxuries for a ma,ority of the world population. ince watching that "ideo, I%"e become more aware of the fact that while we are eating steaks and blasting the AC, more than half of the world population don%t ha"e that luxury, because it%s not a sustainable lifestyle for - billion people on this planet. As of now, I don%t necessarily feel the effects of the food and energy crises, since I%m li"ing in the . where e"erything is in excess. !owe"er, I can%t help but wonder ,ust how long the /arth would be able to sustain our lifestyles, whether I would feel the conse$uences in my lifetime or would my children be burdened with them. 0ess fortunate people are already feeling the strain that humans are putting on the /arth. According to the "ideo, 12* of the world li"e without basic sanitation, 34* li"e without impro"ed water source, and 31* are malnourished. &hese are the true crises of the world, e"en though they are not co"ered on the news as extensi"ely as wars and terrorism. &hese facts are not the conspicuous ones that e"eryone thinks of first, but they are ,ust as deadly and serious as any wars taking place around the world.
