Circular tour of the picturesque old town of Lohr

1 The old town hall, an
imposing building, 1599 1601 built by Michael Imkeller, the master builder from Lohr. On the ground floor formerly open market which was converted into a covered market at the beginning of the 19th century. Today it is a cultural meeting point, a room for concerts, lectures, exhibitions and several objets dart. The original Renaissance gable roof was replaced by a plain one in the classical style with a tower on the north front aside a turret with a goldplated Justitia in the Corinthian style. Market crucifix at the south-east corner. On the first floor there is a vestibule with Renaissance columns and a Renaissance stucco ceiling. Up to 1985 the city council and the local authorities were based there, after the renovation in 1989 it became the centre of culture and further education in Lohr.

In former times all the courtiers of the counts of Rieneck and all the chief bailiffs of Mainz lived around the castle square.

This is the area of the old tanneries and dye-works, you follow the old town brook to the city park which was laid out in the former city moat.

St. Michaels. A basilica, built on the foundation of several former sites, 13th 15th century, the Romanesque vestry, choir-late Gothic period, tower 1496 (61m high), Epitaphs of the counts of Rieneck in the choir, 15th/16th century in the side aisles and in the tower those of bailiffs of Lohr such as the font of 1488, early baroque choir stalls of 1654 by Valentin Mahler from Lohr, new Gothic altars 1890 1905 of high quality made by Franz Wilhelm Driesler, a native of Lohr. 2 Historic churchyard with stone crucifix. 3 Former Ladys chapel/grammar school (Kirchplatz 5/6). 1416 with Karner-charnel house, grammar school from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th, sculpture of God the Father (15th century) on the west front. 4 Former Capucin monastery (Kirchplatz 8). Originally castle of the counts of Rieneck. Medieval keep converted into Capucin monastery with St. Josefs church from 1651 1664 and converted into the Bruder-Konrad-Haus which houses various offices connected with the church. 5 A former school for local children (Kirchplatz 9) built in the classical style 1819, today the music school is housed here and various adult education classes. 6 The former chaplains house (Kirchplatz 3), basement 15th/16th century, upper storey 18th century, small churchyard door, 15th century with a Gothic recess (alcove) and the gallery walk along the battlements.

1 Castle. Residence of the counts of Rieneck since the 14th century, in 1559 residence of the Mainz chief bailiffs, from 1814 residence of the Bavarian higher district court, up to 1972 of the government of the district. Birthplace of the Bamberg and Wrzburg archbishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal (1730 1795). Two round towers, moat and bridge facing the town, extensions on both sides. Knights hall, princes chamber (17th/18th century). Today the castle is a museum, the Spessart Museum with a rich collection of typical items from man and forest, Mensch und Wald, especially the history of the local glass production and items from the world of hunting and foresting.

3 Along the Grtnerstrasse with a view of the former grammar school, 1904 in New-Renaissance style, since 1975 Realschule (fifth-form college). 4 You can see the State School of forestry further up.

Position VII

3 Former winery (Schlossplatz 5) built in the 14th century as a superior Bandhaus, a barrel makers workshop. Tourist information in the basement, an art gallery in the upper storey; on the opposite side the old Kellerei, a winery with attractive half-timbering. 4 The new town hall (Schlossplatz 3) from 1986, with an added conference hall built on the old foundation walls of the Zehntscheune where the tithes were paid in medieval times, previously the stables of the castle and the prison from 1863 1949, the so-called Fronfeste were situated on this site.

Suburb of fishermen and boatmen

1 Historic tower Bayersturm, named after the Town criers family Bayer. Main tower of the city wall (13th/14th century), a solid six storey building with corner stones and a baroque top. 2 The fishermans well was donated by the inhabitants of the so-called Meeviertel (the fishermens quarter of Lohr) in 1983 on the occasion of the town anniversary. 3 On the opposite side: The former guild house of the ship builders, 1867 1941 synagogue

The position of the former gateway is marked in the stone with Lohrs coat of arms.

Crossroads Hauptstrae, Turmstrae and Lohrtorstrae

by the sculptor Hermann Amrhein in 1936, depicting figures from the fairy tale Brderlein und Schwesterlein (little brother and sister).

Sparkasse (savings bank) well of coins (1984 ) with reproductions of the Lohr Pfennig (penny), the Mainz thaler, the Bavarian crown thaler and ducats (Dukaten) and the 5 DM coin.

2 On the same site as the former hospital you will find todays MainSpessart-Klinikum, Graf-von-Rieneckstrae 5 with the hospital chapel (1870) John the Baptist with a cast-iron top, on the east side Hermann Amrheins sculpture of the good Samaritan.
