1. DESCRIPTION 1.1 GENERAL

The Time Stamping Function (TSF) is a unit which delivers time stamped azimuth positions of a radar antenna in rotation. It accepts time on two input channels, azimuth radar positions from an Azimuth Distribution Unit (ADU) and provides a time stamped output message for pre-defined azimuth positions. In the absence of satisfactory time inputs, the TSF will use its own internal oscillator to maintain correct progression of time. TSF provides an option for a precision oscillator, giving greater free run time accuracy. Front panel LEDs show the status of input signals, power and TSF status. Contacts are provided for a power failure alarm .

1.2

CHARACTERISTICS

1.2.1 Physical
The TSF comes in two versions. -Firstly as a VME Card, with Length 233mm, Width 160mm and Depth 1 slot VME. -Secondly as a Rack Unit, Width 438mm, Height = 1 U = 43.8 mm and Depth 240mm In both versions, the card is always equipped with a so-called standard oscillator featuring a time drift less than 150 ms/day. In addition, the card may be equipped with a so called precision oscillator featuring a maximum time drift less than 20 ms/month. Figures 1.1 to 1.4 overleaf give the TSF appearance and panel details.

1.2.2 Electrical
The TSF Card requires a 5V (up to 2A) and 12V (up to 550mA) DC power supply. This is provided through the VME backplane into which it slots. The TSF Rack requires a 230V AC 50/60Hz power supply, through a three pin IEC connector. Data input and output is by signals in the following formats. Serial message and 1pps inputs IRIG B inputs ADU (ARP,ACP,GoNoGo) input Time Stamped Serial message outputs Voltage free power fail relay - RS232C - 1KHz 2V (NFS 87-500, IRIG 104-60) - RS422 - RS232C - Rated at 35VA

1.3.1 Input Data

1.3.1.1 Asynchronous Serial Messages Two asynchronous serial time messages may be input on J1 or J3. The messages should be accompanied by a 1pps signal to allow accurate timing and oscillator disciplining. The 1pps to which the message refers (previous or next) is definable by jumper setting. Baud rates of 4800, 9600 and 19200 baud and signal polarity are selectable by jumper setting. The TSF will recognise two time formats; <STX> or <SOH> messages, with transmission characteristics as detailed in Appendices 1 and 2 of the Development Specification* 1.3.1.2 IRIG-B type AM signal Two IRIG-B type time signals may be input, on connectors J2 or J4, conforming to NFS 87-500 or IRIG 104-60 standards, as detailed in Appendix 3 of the Development Specification*. 1.3.1.3 Azimuth Input The Azimuth Input on J5 provides ARP and ACP pulses for azimuth positioning of a radar antenna, and a GoNoGo signal. Whether the ACP pulses represent 14 or 12 bit encoding of radar antenna position is selectable by jumper setting (LK 4).

1.3.2 Output Data

1.3.2.1 Asynchronous Serial Messages Preset azimuth positions define sector boundaries. Sector size is set by jumper to be 1, 1/32, 1/64 or 1/128 of a revolution, and is referenced to 0 azimuth. A serial message, containing the Time Stamp for a sector, is output within 100ms of that end of sector. Its data format is as follows

TIME RECEIVER SELECTION

Both a serial message (with 1pps) and IRIG-B type time signals can be applied to both TRx input channels of the TSF. When both are present preference is given to the serial message. The TSF also automatically recognises the serial data message for processing. If the serial message fails then TSF will obtain time from the IRIG-B source if present. The time inputs are processed and the resulting time passed into an internal clock for each channel. In the absence of any input data to a channel, the TSF will maintain time with its own oscillator. If the received time fails to advance correctly each second, the TSF will switch to its internal time. It will switch back to received time when two correctly advancing time signals are received. If two consecutive seconds of received time are missing, or in incorrect progression then the TSF reports an error through the panel LEDs and output message.

TSF Technical Manual

0671CA049A V01.02

2.3

AZIMUTH PROCESSING

The Azimuth Input delivers ARP, ACP and GoNoGo signals. The TSF monitors these signals and numbers the ACP, starting with 1 for the pulse immediately after the ARP. If two consecutive ACP or ARP are missed then the TSF reports an error through the front panel LEDs (ACP and ARP) and output message. The error is cleared when two consecutive ARP or ACP are detected. If the GoNoGo signal shows NoGo, this is shown by the panel LEDs (ACP and ARP) and the output message.

2.4

OUTPUT MESSAGE

A message is triggered as the ACP passes predetermined numbers which define an end of sector. These numbers are calculated according to the sector size and ACP encoding selected by jumper. The message output for the sector gives the time and status information as detailed in 1.3.2.1, and refers to the time at end of sector. The time delivered has a rounded accuracy of 500s. The message frequency defaults to once per second in the absence or failure of ADU information, if the GoNoGo signal shows NoGo, and in the absence or failure of both time receivers. The message contains status information to allow examination of the failure mode. The messages on output ports J6 and J7 and on P2 pins 27C and 28C are identical.

2.5

OSCILLATOR DISCIPLINING

When an Receiver signal is present with a valid message then the 1pps or IRIG signal is used to discipline the oscillator for the TSF. Choice as to which Receiver signal is given preference when two are available is made by jumper setting (LK 9). TSF examines the time difference between the Receiver and oscillator signals. The oscillator frequency is gently brought into line with the receiver signal so that if the receiver fails, then the oscillator runs very close to true time. With the precision oscillator fitted the time accuracy is improved further.

3. SETUP
Upon initial commissioning of TSF correct signal connections need to be made with a minimum of two time signals (IRIG or Serial) being made into the receiver A and receiver B inputs. Additionally jumper settings need to be correctly made. Finally the TSF needs inserting into a VME rack for its power supply (Card Version) or connecting to a mains supply (Rack Version).

3.1

JUMPER SETTINGS

The following table shows the jumper settings available. Those which are factory configured are shown as BOLD. For the Rack version, the Top Lid needs to be removed for access to the jumpers. See overleaf for the jumper postions on the TSF.

Power On and Off

For the Card version, TSF obtains power from the VME P1 connector and has no on/off switch. Power is applied by inserting TSF into a VME rack. For the Rack version, TSF obtains power from a mains supply, through the backpanel. Power is applied by switching the rocker switch in the backpanel to the I position.

4. MAINTENANCE 4.1 Preventive maintenance

There is no preventive maintenance for this unit in either form.

4.2

Corrective maintenance

The TSF contains a BITE designed to help in finding a failure location. A corrective maintenance will take place according to the information displayed on the TSF front panel in either card or unit version, as described in 1.3.2.2 or available with the alarm relays as presented in 1.3.2.3. Before intervening, take all necessary precautions against ESD as suggested in the introductory chapter (0.2) Rack Version: In the event of TSF failure, switch off the rack then examine the fuses in the back panel and replace any which have failed. If this is unsuccessful then remove the 4 front screws holding the rack against its housing cabinet, gently remove the rear cables without any specific order and return to the manufacturer for repair. Fuse reference : 5x20 mm, T500mA/230V Card Version: In the event of TSF failure, remove it from the VME rack and return to the manufacturer for repair.
