Project code Supervisor Title Number of students Discipline Description MRP111 Dr. Majid RAD CAD-based design of modular fixtures for machining operations 3 Mechanical/mechatronics Note: Students taking this project must have completed ENS2214 unit or must have expertise in using SolidWorks. SolidWorks is used as the CAD software. A methodology is developed for analysing the geometry of parts and its machining features. On the basis of the outcome a layout is determined automatically (or interactively) for holding and supporting the part in the fixture. A library of predefined standard 3D fixture components is established and the designer interactively (or semi-automatically) puts 3D fixture components in place to bring the fixture model to completion.
MRP112 Dr. Majid RAD Optimum determination of blank layouts for sheet-metal cutting processes 2 Mechanical/mechatronics Sheet metals are produced in standard sizes in the market. For blanking operations it is required to cut these sheets into narrow strips and cut parts from the strips on mechanical presses. A methodology is to be developed which takes the geometry of the part into consideration and automatically (or semi-automatically) determines the best layout for any given part such that maximum number of parts are produced from each sheet. A visual simulation of possible layouts for finding the best layout is required.
MRP113 Dr. Majid RAD Computer-aided process planning (CAPP) for turning operations 2 or 3 Mechanical/mechatronics It is intended to put the logic of expert human in a computer program to determine the best process plan for turning operations. A methodology is to be developed for analysing the parts being machined and assigning required machining steps in the proper order. The project includes determination of appropriate cutting tools and parameters for each machining step.
MRP115 Dr. Majid RAD Optimum selection of materials for engineering applications 2 or 3 Mechanical Students taking this project must have already completed the ENS3260 unit with a good result. The objective of this project is to develop a methodology to facilitate/automate the task of material selection on the basis of the Ashbys materials selection charts. Mathematical models for various problems should be developed and properties of materials of Ashby charts should be restored in a computer program. This information is then used in an optimisation program/software such that optimum material for the given application is introduced among a range of other materials available.
