in 1994 election campaign, to scale back government, eliminate some regulations, cut taxes, and balance the budget. With many voters feeling that the Democrats had lost touch with their concerns, they ended up responding enthusiastically to the Contract with America. 2) Whitewater Affair: Changes that President Clinton had engaged in improper business transactions before becoming President. Despite many of Clintons friends were convicted of various crimes in the Whitewater affair, Clinton himself was never accused of anything officially. Section 2 3) Proliferation: The spread of a certain item or thing. Russia signed an agreement to work jointly with NATO to deal with many situations, which included the proliferation of nuclear weapons across the world. 4) Apartheid: The systematic separation of people of different racial backgrounds. South Africas minority of white people had used apartheid for many years to deny rights to the majority of African Americans in the nation. 5) Economic Sanctions: Trade restrictions and other economic measures intended to punish another nation. The United States and other nations created economic sanctions in hopes of encouraging reform in South Africa from its views of apartheid by literally making the nation very poor. Section 3 6) Bilingual Education: The teaching of students in their native language, as well as in English. Many criticized bilingual education because it promoted students to speak in their native language, and not English, thus not being entirely assimilated. 7) Internet: A computer network that links millions of people around the world. The Internet has revolutionized many areas of American life, from public schooling to regions in the world that are poorer than most. 8) NAFTA: Agreement calling for the removal of trade restrictions among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The resulting effect of NAFTA was a single market similar to market of the European Union, with goals to stimulate economic growth. 9) WTO: International organization formed in 1995 to encourage the expansion of world trade. In addition to encouraging the expansion of world trade, the WTO would also have more power in negotiating new trade agreements and resolving trade disputes. 10) Multinational Corporation: A corporation the operates in more than one country. Multinational Corporations benefit many people around the world by providing new products and jobs, and by introducing advanced technology to less privileged nations.
