Project 4 | Bottle Packaging Project

Introduction
There were many steps to this project and the overall outcome was for each student to recreate their own version of a four pack of soda based on the Jones Soda bottle package as a template. The themes for each packaging project were chosen at random. Each bottle was to represent a part or piece of the theme while the outer package would represent each part as a whole. The first step in the project was to get a theme and start brainstorming and thinking out ideas. Atleast 3 mock-ups of the box were made during the project. The first one was to be just a rough cut out to get an idea for making the box. The second mock-up was to experiment with different materials for the box itself as well as different adhesives to hold the box together. The third mock-up of the box was the draft due before the final with everything put together as a potentially finished product. All throughout this project refinements and critiquing were made and given to help develop each students particular concept and to help discover new ways to make the package come together where both the bottles and box are unique in their own way but are both visually connected as part of a whole product.

My Experience When I first was looking at this project I didnt really know what I was in for. I just knew that I would have to recreate a soda bottle box somehow and that all of the bottles would have to include recreated labels as well. There wasnt much of a segway into this project either on account of time in class. So at the very end of class we were all assigned a topic and I listened intently for what I might get. I knew that once I received my topic I would be able to start thinking of different concepts and directions to go with this theme that would encompass my whole project experience. My word was Human Anatomy and it was a little bit of a surprise at first but I was grateful for it in comparison to some of the other topics/themes that other people received. I thought this theme was a little tricky, but I knew it would be solid once I came up with ideas for what direction I wanted to go in. The first thought that came to my head immediately after I was given my topic was a human body split in half to where you could see the inside anatomy. The direction I immediately thought of was different body parts that I might be able to use for each drink as a flavor and then put them together as a whole like pieces of a puzzle. The body pieces of a human being. My experience with thought process and sketching was just getting out all that I knew about the human bodies anatomy and how I could encorporate it into my overall design. Challenges The challenges I faced with this first part of the project is that I was struggling with coming up with another concept beside the one that I had initially thought of in the first place from when I received my topic. I was thinking about using different body parts as the pieces of the whole package so that I could make each drink a different theme as part of a whole. I really liked this idea and I knew it could work, but I just couldnt get my mind to explore other options and figure out

another direction I could go with the theme of Human Anatomy. With this beginning of the project it was hard for me to think outside of the box a little bit. I think this was because I was too set on my theme rather that allowing myself to trail off with something that could still be related, but just not exactly what my theme was literally. I found myself stuck without being able to explore more options on my own and that was a challenge for me. Thoughts I wasnt sure how I felt about my theme of Human Anatomy at first, but then I really realized that I had a lot of things I could work with. I was able to think about all the different elements I could use and explore just what human anatomy actually was. One of the first things I did for research was to look on Google Images at Human Anatomy and sure enough, the vision in my head showed up on the screen. The problem with that was that I already had something formed in my head rather than thinking fresh about how it could form in my head for my overall package design.

My Experience For this part of the project I focussed a lot on bottle designs and I looked at a lot of them in my visual research. I wanted to make sure that the shape of the Jones box was the same shape that I would want my own to be. I also wanted to make sure that I could actually create the box myself and the best way to see how it all comes together was to take apart a Jones soda box. It was also very helpful for me to use the Jones soda label and put it into Illustrator as a template for my own labels. Through my visual research it was interesting to see how each soda bottle package was tied together as a whole product. It made me think about how I would tie in all of my pieces together but make them different at the same time. Challenges A challenge that I had that was easily overcome was with the box shape. At first it was difficult to understand exactly how to fold it, but I quickly learned after looking over it a few times. Another challenge I was having for my concept was coming up with a good name/title for my brand as well as a type of logo or header that would become the signature stamp of my product. I noticed that a lot of people from my group already had their names picked out and a logo associated with it. I have a couple name ideas already, but I dont know how to get my theme across as well as create a catchy and somewhat memorable title so that my soda brand will stand out. Thoughts I think that once I develop my concept more and find out the direction that Im going with my bottle project I will have a better understanding about what my overall title for my product will be. Im not sure though if it would be better to come up with a title first and then base my

thought process off of that? Do you write a book and then name the title or the other way around? I believe its the other way around where you should create what it is you plan on doing and develop the concept and then when everything is all structured and fits together could be the appropriate time to add a title that fits nicely with the overall developed theme.

My Experience This was a fun part of the project for me and I felt like once I started to think of ways to develop my concepts I started to think of more ideas. I was already set on a color scheme which I think helped me out a lot because I didnt have to worry about what it would look like for color but I could focus more on the designs. For making my labels I used the Jones Soda bottle label for a template and then put my own elements over the top. I was able to find out the different grids and line structures that way which was very helpful for me to get things in place. I noticed that I had very basic concepts and although there are three different versions of my labels, they are basically all the same concept where I would put a different symbol on each bottle. I thought this was a good idea until I realized that I should have experimented more with ideas that were completely different from each other rather that ideas that were different but all based off of the same idea to begin with. Challenges One of the biggest challenges for me during this part of the project was coming up with a good design for my box. I really had a hard time trying to make it look interesting while at the same time trying to make it tie in all of my elements so that it was the whole that the bottles would be part of. I felt like it was easier to make my bottle labels because I only had to focus on one thing rather than having to tie in all four of my elements at the same time while making it visually interesting. I realize that my box is going to matter the most and make a difference in whether or not someone might purchase it, but I was just having a struggle with coming up with something good to advertise it. What I spent my time on the most for my box was my title/ name of my brand. I experimented with the font weights of futura and I was able to come up with a pretty cool title.

Thoughts I think my favorite box idea that I created was the box concept number 2 because it was bold and it wrapped around the sides of the box or else it cut off part of the element and went over as a bleed. I thought that was pretty visually interesting rather than just having all the elements stuck on a particular side of the box. I think it looked bold that way, but I still think that I need to develop my concept more from just the symbols inside of the circles.

My Experience I chose the bottle that I would be using and after I did that I knew that I would have to make sure that the colors on the labels matched up somewhat closely so that it looks like it was on purpose. The colors Ive chosen are: purple, blue, red and green. It was suggested to me to make the caps of my bottles white and to put stickers on the tops of them. The refinements I had are of some experimentation that I did with different sizes for the bottle caps as well as changing the colors from what they were originally on a few of my bottle elements. Another thing I did was re-create the muscle element. Before it wasnt really anthing but a substitute, but I found a picture online where I went in to Illustrator and traced the outline using the pen tool. I think the new muscle turned out very nicely. All the other elements that I used were vector files that I found and then changed the color to match the color scheme that Ive chosen. Challenges One of the challenges I had with my refinements was creating the muscle in Illustrator. It was difficult to find a good picture to use that when vectored in Illustrator without any bones or other tissues on it that it would communicate as a muscle. I think it ended up looking very much like the outline of an arm muscle although it was a little tricky to draw with the pen tool. Another challenge I had was with the heart. It is a vector that I found online and it has many complicated lines that include some different widths and strokes applied to it. I had to be careful not to mess around with it too much or else some elements were lost or else they were too big in proportion in comparison to the rest of the heart and the heart as a whole. That goes for all of them too concerning line weights. It was tricky for me to try and get them all to be roughly the same size because they were all created differently. Sometimes when I would resize one of the items the line weights

would get messed up, and then maybe going in to change the size of another element it would stay the same so that I would have to change one of the two to make them equal. This was definitely a challenge for me to figure out, but in the end I think I was able to get them relatively close to one another. Thoughts I want my overall box to have a neutral look to it so that the colors on the bottle will stand out more. Thats why I chose the colors that I did and did not include yellow or any other sort of light colors. The box is to be light while the bottles will stand out in their color. I chose very basic and boldish colors because they are familiar and I think pleasing to the eye in the combination that they turned out to be. I think it will look nicely with the neutral colored box.

My Experience After making another mock-up of the box, Ive decided that I do want to go with the fold of the Jones Soda Box. I am definitely familiar with it by now and I know that white glue works just fine to make it stick together the way I want it to without it falling apart. The help I received from class was very helpful because I finally found out what theme I want to go with for my overall concept. I was debating between doing a gross out theme and my original idea of using internal body parts for each soda bottle in a healthy sort of way. Ive decided to go with more of a natural and healthy soda because it seems more professional and simple. Many of the people I talked to about each theme chose the natural body theme over the gross out. I think it will look really nice once its finished. Challenges At this point the only thing I was really struggling with was finding a good name for my product still. I knew that if I ended up going with the gross out theme that I would name my product Body Fluid and would use different body fluids for the flavors of my soda. Because I decided to go with a more natural theme I think that I might call my soda either Body Fuel or Body Essentials. Thoughts Im happy with my choice to go with a more natural soda theme and I was able to get some great ideas. One of my classmates told me to check out a soda called POM and also see what other natural soda brands as well as natural juices, etc. have to offer design wise. I plan to do more research on the different styles that make up a theme like that to get ideas for my own bottle packaging.

My Experience I really made a headway when pulling this mock-up together and I feel like I have such a better ideas about what my final product will end up looking like in the end. I know that some of the elements on my box are a little crowded and I plan on loosening them up as well as getting rid of the justification I put on the labels for the body copy. This will loosen up some space and allow for more white space that gives each element room to breathe. I like the gray look and feel of the overall bottle packaging, but getting back critique I think I might end up going with white so that its cleaner and so that the box will not distract from the colors of the bottles inside. I think having that contrast will really make the bottles stand out. I learned a cool trick for getting the labels off the Jones soda bottles nice and clean and its by soaking them in a gallon of water mixed with a half a cup of baking soda and just letting them sit for thirty minutes. That has benefitted me when taking the labels off rather than having them tear and make a mess everywhere. Challenges Again, I had some challenges with my box and I wasnt sure if my elements were too small or if I just didnt have enough. I thought that I had plenty of things on there, but maybe I need to add more? Also, looking at my labels for a second time I noticed that they looked a little plain and that they werent very dynamic. Getting back critique I learned that they needed to be more exciting so that when the bottles are pulled out of the box, the customer/client has something to look forward to each time they pull out a bottle.

Thoughts Another thing I now know that I should work on changing is the typeface that Im using. I think it looks nice, but I was suggested to use Avenir instead of Futura. I think that Avenir is a more plain font, and I do like futura, but maybe because I like futura its ruining a potentially great product. Im going to try Avenir even though it is a little plain, but maybe thats all my packaging needs is something to balance it out nicely.

Project 4 | Bottle Packaging Project

Conclusion
This was probably the most extensive project yet and there were many weeks of planning, refinding, experimentation and preparation involved. In this project I learned some very interesting skills and techniques that I didnt think I was going to be learning. Not only did I learn how to re-design a bottle package plus the labels, but I also learned how the box itslef works and how it structures and pieces together as a whole. I learned how all of the elements that make up the whole product work together. I really learned a lot from this project and put in a lot of effort doing so. I know that I probably would have never understood, thought of, or appreciated any kind of packaging as I definitely do now.
