Principals Column
Dear Parents, YOU ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND OUR PTO MEETING WHICH WILL BE HELD ON APRIL 8, AT 7 P.M. IN OUR DOCKSIDE THEATER. TOPIC: TECHNOLOGY SAFETY This important meeting will be a joint presentation sponsored by our School Improvement Council (SIC), our PTO, and our school. During this year, our SIC has set a goal to provide information for parents regarding the issues children encounter in today's world. The content of our first parent presentation is technology safety. Agent Britt Dove from SLED's Computer Crimes Unit will be presenting on the topic Protecting Your Child in the Age of Technology. The presentation will deal with two questions: What are the threats? How can I protect my child? Agent Dove's presentation will be for ADULTS ONLY. Fourth and fifth grade students who come with parents will be in sessions led by our guidance counselors on technology safety. These presentations will be geared for these students, only. Kindergarten through third grade students who come with parents will watch a movie in the gym while older children and parents are in the scheduled presentations. We will not have accommodations for students who are not kindergarten age. Please make other plans for them if you are planning to attend this meeting. We look forward to seeing you at this important technology safety presentation.

Inclement Weather MakeMake-Up Days

The Board of Trustees approved the administrations' recommendation for inclement weather make-up days. We had a total of four inclement weather days (January 29 and February 12 -14). We already made-up one day (February 17). The bill passed by the SC legislature and signed by the Governor requires that all scheduled make-up days be used before any days can be forgiven. June 6 is the only remaining make-up day. Therefore, we will make-up a second day on June 6. The remaining two inclement weather days were forgiven and will not be made-up.

Every school in South Carolina is required by the Education Improvement Act to have a School Improvement Council. The council serves as an advisory committee to the principal and assists with establishing and implementing goals for the school. The council also helps establish priorities for the capital expenditures budget, the incentive budget and the operational budget for the school. At various times, SIC members are asked to represent the school on district committees. The School Improvement Council is composed of elected and appointed teachers, parents, and community members. Our current council consists of the following elected parents from our school. Rotating off the council this year: Lisa Duncan Jo Anne Hill Jennifer Thornsberry Vera Timmons The following parents will serve their second year during 2014-2015 school year: Robby Aull Michael Sechrest Each year parents elect their representatives to serve on the council. Three people elected will begin their term of service in the 2014-2015 school year and will rotate off the council at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. One person elected will only serve during the 2014-2015 school year. Before submitting a nomination, we request that you ask the person for permission to submit his/her name. It is important that those nominated be willing to serve as a representative for the school. If you are interested in running, please nominate yourself. Elected parents should have a child who will be at Lake Murray Elementary for the length of time of their service on the council.
