The Bicycle Section to take you for a spin

by Sandy Sanders, Bicycle Sections Outings Chair
In 1982 Sierra Club members Lee Siegel and Rusty Runholt, both avid cyclists, saw a need for a bicycling group within the San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club. They publicized a meeting and Lee volunteered the use of his condo as a first gathering place. Fifty interested cyclists showed up and shortly thereafter the Bicycle Section was formed and joined the list of other officially-recognized sections within the chapter. Susan Schereschewsky became the first chair of the group. Soon the section had a full schedule of monthly bicycle rides led by Chapter Outings Leaders, and the membership quickly grew. Today the section's membership hovers around 150. We have a monthly newsletter in print form and our list of rides appears on the web. Every month the Bicycle Section has rides of every type, length and level of difficulty. Most of the rides are road rides of a few hours ranging from 15 miles to 60 miles. But the section also has oneday rides of over 100 miles and multi-day tours for the more avid cyclists, and mountain bike rides on some of the local trails. Some of our more popular annual outings are our four-day Rose Parade ride from San Diego to Pasadena, weekend car-camps in Anza Borrego desert, a weekend in the Temecula wine country, a weekend stay at Warner Springs Ranch with an ascent of Mt. Palomar and a long soak in the hot springs, and weekends at the Sierra Club's Foster Lodge in the Laguna Mountains. We average about 15 one-day rides every month, in all areas of the county. During the summer months with their later sunsets we have several after-work evening rides. A tradition is our weekly Thursday evening ride through the Fairbanks Ranch/Rancho Santa Fe area, after which everyone gathers for dinner at a local casual restaurant. The Thursday evening rides start in midApril and go through September.

For environmental reasons, the Sierra Club strongly recommends car pooling. However, for insurance reasons, COLs cannot arrange car pools, although members may voluntarily arrange them among themselves. The COL and other trip participants may (or may not) be present at an arranged car pool location. The Sierra Club and its leaders can assume no responsibility for the drivers or the vehicles. Please offer to help reimburse your driver. A suggested guideline is based on typical total operating expenses (not just gas): one passenger - 9 cents per mile; two passengers - 7 cents per mile each; three passengers - 5 cents per mile each; four passengers - 4 cents per mile each. Tolls, entrance or parking fees should also be split among the passengers. If you switch cars, you should still pay your original driver the suggested round trip cost. El Cajon Car Pool. Take I-8 to Second Street exit. Go south one block to Oakdale Avenue. Park on Oakdale. We meet on the SW corner of Second and Oakdale. Grossmont Car Pool. Drive east on I-8, exit Jackson Drive and turn left. At the next light, turn right to Murray Drive. From I-8 west, exit Jackson Drive and go straight across the intersection. The Park & Ride is next to the Red Lobster Restaurant (do not park in the restaurants half of the lot). Mira Mesa Car Pool. From I-15, go west at Mira Mesa Blvd. Take the first right into the Park & Ride lot. Mission Valley Car Pool. Take I-8 to the Qualcomm Way off-ramp. Go west on Camino de la Reina. Park on Camino del Este near Camino de la Reina. Meet near the SE corner of Camino del Este and Camino de la Reina.

Grading System
The grade is a 3-part code describing the difficulty of the outing. The first part, a capital letter, refers to the difficulty of the trip; the second part, a number, states the number of miles that will be traveled on the longest day; and the last part, another capital letter, refers to the total elevation gain or loss for the day.
Difficulty Elevation Change E Easy This is the number of miles, A less than 500 ft. M Moderate rounded to the nearest mile, B 500-1,000 ft. H Hard traveled on the longest day C 1,001-2,000 ft. S Strenuous of the trip. D 2,001-3,000 ft. V Very Strenuous E over 3,000 ft. EXAMPLE: M8C is a moderately difficult day hike which requires going 8 miles on the longest day, and which could climb or descend up to 2,000 ft. (C) in any one day. Mileage

We also have monthly meetings which usually include a potluck dinner, a slide show or other presentation about tours members have taken, or other topics of interest to cyclists. Another aspect of the Bicycle Section is advocacy. The section has always been a member of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition. One of our members sits on the board of the coalition, which represents the interests of all bicyclists in seeking safer, more bicycle-friendly facilities throughout the county and promotes responsible riding. All of the Bicycle Section rides are open to everyone, members and non-members alike. If you haven't been on a bike in a while you might want to watch for one of our short, flat beginner rides, which usually begin with a bike safety inspection and include brief instruction on safe riding techniques. If you are a little more confident in your abilities, come to one of our regular Sunday morning rides. Every Sunday morning at 9 we have a moderately-paced ride of about 25 miles with some rolling hills. The first, second and fifth Sundays of the month the ride starts at the Wherehouse Records parking lot at the corner of El Camino Real and Del Mar Heights Road in Del Mar, and the third and fourth Sundays of the month we meet in the parking lot immediately north of the Mission Bay Visitors Center. Our next weekend events are an Anza Borrego car camp and rides on the weekend of March 31, and the Warner Springs Ranch weekend on May 5-6. You can always find our schedule of rides and a membership form on the web at http:// www.sierraclub.org/chapters/ sandiego/outspoken/ or you can call (619) 282-0425 to request that a free copy of our newsletter, Out Spoken', be mailed to you. For more general information about the section, please call (858) 452-3905. All you need to join us on a ride is a bicycle in good working order and a helmet (required on all rides). Come out for a ride. You'll be welcomed by friendly active people who love the outdoors.

Enjoy four days of backing in the High Sierra. This trip is still in the planning stages; but our new format is to advertise early to let everyone know we are planning a trip. The bus trip will include one strenuous backpack trip, two hard backpack trips, a moderate backpack trip and an easy camping trip. Leaders are needed for four of the trips. The price is $125.00 for members and $135.00 for nonmembers. The bus will depart San Diego at 6 p.m., Thursday, August 30, and return about 7 p.m. Monday September 3.
