Saturday panels will address transportation planning and funding, San Diego County's general plan, energy use and conservation, water quality and supply issues, habitat conservation plans, and upcoming state legislation that will affect San Diegos environment. There will also be a special session on issues affecting the environment along the border of California and Mexico. A workshop will be held on Sunday to educate the public on how to access funds from Propositions 12 and 13, the park and water bond acts approved by the voters last year. For this extended holiday weekend, we are heading to the grandeur and beauty of Yosemite's rugged uplands. We have scheduled nine trips of various difficulties. Trips 1 - 4 set out from Tioga Road and take the hiker through enchanted forests and verdant meadows with meandering streams dropping off into powerful, thundering waterfalls. Some trips are base camps, which enable groups to explore surrounding peaks and tributaries. Trips 5 - 9 are in the northern half of the park and take the hiker over nosebleed passes, through old-growth forests, and across lake-laced terrain. We will leave from San Diego at 6 p.m. Friday, return late Wednesday. For trip descriptions and available space, go to http://www.sierraclub.org/chapters/ sandiego/bus/2001Jul.htm. Assistants are needed. Please contact Marty Stevens. For more information, call Marty Stevens. To reserve a space, send trip preferences and a $20 deposit (or payment in full of $150 if member, $160 if nonmember) with two SASEs to Marty Stevens, P.O. Box

Desert Committee Outings

The CaliforniaNevada Regional Conservation Committee (CNRCC) Desert Committee's purpose is to work for the protection, preservation, and conservation of the California/Nevada desert; support the same objectives in all desert areas of the Southwest; monitor and work with governments and agencies to promote preservation of our arid lands; sponsor educational and work trips; encourage and support others to work for the same objectives; maintain, share and publish information about the desert. All Desert Committee activities, unless stated otherwise, are suitable for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Special physical conditioning is not necessary. The average car or high clearance vehicle will be adequate for most trips; however, many of the roads used are dirt and, as with all desert travel, you should come prepared. For a good guide to desert travel we recommend the Sierra Club book "Adventuring in the California Desert" by Lynn Foster. We want you to enjoy our study trips and work parties. They are designed to help you see the desert in a way you have not seen it before. We usually have a campfire in the evenings with lots of food (potluck) and camaraderie. For a complete listing of CNRCC Desert Committee trips, send a large SASE with 55 cents postage to Letty French, 14140 Chimney Rock Rd, Paso Robles, CA 93446

JULY 4-8/WED-SUN CNRCC Desert Com/Toiyabe Chaper RUBY MOUNTAINS BACKPACK

Climb Liberty Pass for the Fourth of July! Then, continue on Nevada's incomparable Ruby Crest Trail to Favre Lake, Wines Peak, Overland Lake, and then down to the Ruby Marshes. Moderately strenuous 5-day backpack, strenuous drive and car shuttle. This trail is one of Nevada's two "crest" trails (the other is the Toiyabe Crest Trail) and traverses one of the state's largest (so far!) wilderness areas. As a constructed trail starting from a paved road, the Ruby Crest Trail is a rarity in Nevada. The trail features rugged mountains with passes above 10,000 feet, sparkling lakes, glacier-carved valleys filled with a profusion of wildflowers, expansive desert views, and perhaps, encounters with bighorn sheep and mountain goats. Possible layover day at Overland Lake and climb of King Peak. For information, reservations, after May 1 send backpacking experience, conditioning, SASE and/or email address to Henry Egghart, hegghart@nvbell.net, 7975 Rusty Road, Reno, NV 89511, 775-852-5309.
