Shoulder Pass

Organisation: 2 players facing each other at a distance suitable for players ability, 1 ball. Players pass the ball between each other using correct shoulder pass technique. Coaching Points:

Balanced starting position with opposite foot forward to throwing arm Use second to steady the ball if necessary Hold the ball at head height with fingers spread behind (not under) the ball Body weight is transferred from the back foot to the front foot The hand, arm and shoulder should then thrust forwards towards the target

Progressions:

Ensure players use both left and right sides Increase the distance of the pass Move from a static receiver to a moving receiver Add a defender to the moving receiver Apply pressure by using pass in a group drill e.g. Shoulder Pass with 1 Ball

Shoulder Pass with 1 ball


rganisation: 8+ players and 1 ball. Players divide up on the corners of a square, use cones to mark this if necessary. 1 player begins with a ball in the middle of the line on one side of the square. They then pass diagonally to another player driving out from their corner of the square. This process then repeats with the path of the ball forming a diamond shape within the square formation. Aim to work consistently for a set period of time / amount of passes. Coaching Points:

Strong, flat, accurate pass Ball travels to the space in front of the moving player so she can drive on to it Balanced and controlled landing, obeying the footwork rule Time your run in accordance with the person with the ball are they in a balanced, ready position?

Progressions:

Change the direction of the practice Incorporate different attacking moves e.g. change of direction, dodge before receiving the ball Increase the size of the square

Bounce Pass
Organisation: 2 players facing each other at a distance suitable for players ability, 1 ball. Players pass the ball between each other using correct bounce pass technique. Coaching Points:

From a two-handed catch take the ball to just above waist height Fingers should be spread behind the ball Keep elbows low and relaxed Transfer weight from back foot to front foot Push the ball down, aiming for it to bounce two-thirds of the distance towards the receiver.

Progressions:

Move from a static receiver to a moving receiver Add a defender to the moving receiver Apply pressure by using pass in a group drill e.g. Straight Line Drill 1 Apply to circle edge feeds in to a shooter e.g. Shooting: The Lunge

Straight Line 1
Organisation: 2 lines of players with a ball at the front of the line, one at each end of the centre third. 2 feeders placed inside the centre third diagonally apart from each other. Pass first to the closest feeder, sprint forwards and receive the ball again. Turn to face the next feeder and pass again. Sprint forwards and receive the ball back, pass ball on to the opposite line of players. Join the end of this line. Drill begins again. Coaching Points:

Strong, flat, accurate pass Ball travels to the space in front of the moving player so she can drive on to it Head and eyes up Balanced and controlled landing, obeying the footwork rule Time your run in accordance with the person with the ball, both players should be catching the ball in the middle at the same time

Progressions:

Add a 2nd stage defender in the middle of the area Add different attacking moves Increase the size of the area Use a variety of passes Straight Line 2

Straight Line 2
Organisation: 2 lines of players with a ball at the front of the line, one at each end of the centre third. 2 feeders placed inside the centre third opposite each other. Pass to the feeder on your left, one line of players drives through the middle of the area to receive a pass from the same feeder. The other line of players drive behind and round the opposite feeder to receive a pass from the feeder they initially threw to. Players return the ball to the next worker and rejoin the back of this queue.

Coaching Points:

Strong, flat, accurate pass the choice of which must be appropriate to the distance that the ball is travelling

Ball travels to the space in front of the moving player so she can drive on to it Head and eyes up Balanced and controlled landing, obeying the footwork rule Time your run in accordance with the person with the ball, both players should be catching the ball at the same time

The Lunge
Organisation: One feeder on the edge of the circle, one shooter and one defender. Shooter holds off the defender then lunges forward to receive a bounce pass from the feeder. Coaching Points

Shooter must hold a front position facing away from the defender. Shooter should lunge forward as far as possible without dragging rear foot. Maintain balanced position during lunge. Ensure ball from feeder is accurate and away from the defender.

Progressions:

Practice leading with both left and right legs

Chest Pass
Organisation: 2 players facing each other at a distance suitable for players ability, 1 ball. Players pass the ball between each other using correct chest pass technique. Coaching Points:

From a two-handed catching position make sure the ball is kept at chest height Fingers should be spread behind the ball Keep elbows low and relaxed Transfer weight from back foot to front foot Push the ball out, extending and following through with the arms, wrists, hands and fingers in the direction of the receiver

Progressions:

Increase the distance between the players ensuring accuracy and speed are maintained Move from a static receiver to a moving receiver Add a defender to the moving receiver Apply pressure by using pass in a group drill e.g. The Chest Pass Square

Chest Pass With 1 Ball


Organisation: 8+ players and 1 ball. Players divide up on the corners of a square, use cones to mark this if necessary. 1 player begins with a ball in the middle of the line on 1 side of the square. Take the ball from a two-handed catching position Bring the ball up to shoulder height and out to one hand Step out to the same side as the ball (ensuring this is your non-landing foot) Curve the ball around by rotating your shoulder and releasing the ball off your fingertips

Organisation: 2 players facing each other at a distance suitable for players ability, 1 ball. 1 Player passes the ball to the other using correct hook pass and dish technique. Coaching Points:

Refer to Hook pass coaching points For the dish ball o Ball is taken to the side of the body around waist height o Step out to the same side as the ball (ensuring this is not your landing foot) o Bounce the ball to the receiver o Keep ball low to avoid defence

Organisation: 2 players facing each other at a distance suitable for players ability, 1 defender 2nd staging the worker. Worker passes the ball to the other player using correct hook pass and dish technique. A second feeder is placed square to the worker in order for the ball to passed to them. Worker can now begin to use the step-across technique Coaching Points:

Refer to Hook pass and Dish ball coaching points For the step-across technique o Ball is taken to the side of the body around waist height o Step across your body with the opposite foot to the side of the ball (ensure this is not your landing foot) o Bounce the ball to the receiver o Keep ball low to avoid defence

Progressions:

Use both sides of the body Receiver moves to get pass Receiver has a defender (vary starting positions)
