Maintenance
Designers should provide adequate access for periodic cleaning. A comprehensive range of Access fittings are available within the HepSoil SolventWeld soil range (see page 7).
Effect of Frost
Frost does not affect the performance of PVC-U. However, impact strength is reduced at sub-zero temperatures. Care should be taken when installations are undertaken at these temperatures.
Flammability
Figure No. 1 SW3 Expansion Cap
Thermal Movement
The coefficient of linear expansion for PVC-U is 0.5 x 10-4/C temperature
8
Chemical Resistance
PVC-U is resistant to most acids, alkalis and oils. BS code of practice 312
Handling
Take care to avoid damage when handling pipe and fittings. Excessive scratching or scoring detracts from the appearance and can also affect the integrity of the joint.
solvent-weld. Failure to do this can result in joint failure Apply Solvent Cement S240/S241 evenly over mating surfaces of both pipe and socket Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twisting action to the full socket depth Surplus solvent cement should be removed with a cloth. The joint should be firm enough to handle in 10 minutes and can be commissioned after 24 hours. Please observe the safety precautions detailed on each can of solvent cement.
Ensure that the components are properly aligned Push the pipe or spigot end of the fitting fully into the socket Mark the pipe or spigot end of the fitting at the socket face then withdraw it by a minimum of 12mm When the installation is complete, check that the expansion gap has not been lost The pipe run should be clipped adjacent to the expansion socket.
Storage
Pipe should be stored on a reasonably flat surface which is free from sharp projections. Ideally, pipe should be supported uniformly throughout its entire length. If this is not possible, place timber supports at least 75mm wide at 1 metre maximum centres beneath the pipe. Fittings supplied in plastic bags should be stored away from direct sunlight. If this is not possible, the bags should be opened to prevent a build-up of heat. Degreasing cleaners, silicone lubricant, solvent cement and fillers should be stored in a secure place away from any heat source and out of direct sunlight.
Support of Pipework
The table below shows the recommended maximum centres for support of pipework Horizontal Vertical 1.00m 2.00m
Complete soil stacks can be prefabricated using the HepSoil Solvent-Weld system. This may be useful where identical designs are required for multiple projects.
Expansion
Expansion of the pipe work should be allowed for by incorporating expansion sockets at predetermined lengths in long pipe runs. The SW3 Expansion Cap allows solvent-weld sockets to be converted to ring seal, push-fit expansion joints. To make a push-fit expansion joint: Ensure that spigots or pipe cut on site have been chamfered and deburred Check for any deep scratches on the pipe or spigot which could prevent the ring-seal forming a watertight seal Check that the expansion cap is properly seated on the fitting Ensure that all parts of the spigot and socket are dry, clean and free of dust and grit Lubricate the pipe or spigot end of the fitting with Silicone Lubricant Grease S254 NOTE: Do not lubricate inside the socket. Do not use washing-up liquid as a lubricant.
Pipe Cutting
When cutting pipe on site, using a finetoothed hand saw: Cut the pipe cleanly at right angles to its axis Deburr the cut end with a scraper Chamfer the spigot end if this is to be inserted into ring-seal/push-fit joint, to avoid the sealing ring being displaced during insertion
Jointing
Note: There is a small gap between the OD of the pipe and the ID of the fitting. This is to allow sufficient solvent cement into the joint to make a good weld. Ensure the pipe is cut square before assembly with fittings Use Solvent Cleaning Fluid S243 on both surfaces to be joined. This removes all dirt and machine release agents and softens the surface ready for the chemical
W.C. Connection
A comprehensive range of pan connectors is available (see Hepworth Price List for details) enabling push-fit connection to horizontal outlet WC pans. Alternatively, the HepFlex Soil Flexible Pan Connector provides the perfect solution where non standard connection lengths and offsets are encountered.
However, these are not recommended for use where high temperature discharges are likely (e.g. from kitchen sink wastes).
Shrink-on Connection
Fit a replacement soil ring (S360) onto the cast iron pipe spigot i.e. flat edge towards the pipe. Fit the blown socket of the shrink-on connector over the seal and apply gentle heat until the socket shrinks onto the cast iron pipe. This will compress the ring and form a watertight seal. The cast iron spigot should have a relatively smooth surface before making the joint.
Drain Connection
(a) Connections to Salt Glazed and Unjointed Clay The S4 (See Hepworth Price List for details) is used to connect to old clay underground drainage systems. Using a sand and cement compound, cement S4 into the clay collar ensuring that the top of the connector is above floor level to allow expansion of the pipework. (b) Connections to Cast Iron The S4A (See Hepworth Price List for details) is designed to connect to cast iron underground drainage systems. Use gaskin in the bottom third of the cast iron socket and complete the joint using an appropriate sealant.
Roof Weathering
The Multipitch Roof Weathering Slate (S195/S196) has been designed to provide an easy and effective seal between either 82.4mm or 110mm soil pipes. It is suitable for use on a variety of roof pitches from 10 to 55 and is capable of being utilised on the most severe roof-tile profiles.
