Dayra Benavides Senior Capstone Period 1 Mrs. Frank February 27, 2014 Depression I. Introduction Depression is the most common health problem teens and adults tend to have. This mental illness isnt only about feeling sad for a short amount of time its the feeling of loneliness, hopelessness, sadness etc. interfering with your daily life. When someone is depressed not only is that person depressed, theres a probability that the person helping the ill might get depressed as well. This mental health problem mainly affects teenagers from ages 18 to 24, and older people ages 45-64. Also women are most likely than man to be diagnosed as depressed. Teenagers and adults should have the right to have screenings to detect whether or not they are depressed; also those who are already depressed should be allowed more varieties of medication and therapies with their psychologist. If people dont get screenings theres a chance that they might be depressed which leads to the victim committing suicide, isolation, cutting themselves, obesity etc. To make a difference I will meet with the psychiatrist and doctor at the Physicians of Sugar Land. The Physicians of Sugar Land are a clinic that started a program in which every patient had a screening that helped determine whether or not they are found to be depressed or have the principles of depression. diagnosed with depression, he/she automatically has an appointment with the psychiatrist to start treating their problem before its too late. This capstone project will address the four pillars of the Asia Society GPS Leadership Outcomes; Investigating the world, Recognize Perspectives, Take Action, Communicate Ideas. This capstone will help me expand my vocabulary, overcome the fear of public speaking, and become a better public speaker. Also it will help me prepare academically by doing further research on topic and get better at writing papers. Not only will this capstone help me, but it will also help the community. How can you pre-diagnose the symptoms of depression? How can you help someone with depression? II. Learning Objectives 1. To learn more about what is causing people to be depressed 2. To research more the different types of depression around the world 3. To inform people about the National Depression Awareness Week 4. To learn more about what can be done to help those who are depressed 5. To manage my time wisely and not procrastinate 6. To fundraise money and donate it to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance 7. To learn more about the program the Physicians of Sugar Land have 8. Measuring Project Rules People that I will try to help are those who are depressed, or have any initiation of this mental health problem. To keep track of what Ive done I will keep a notebook or a word document in which the amount of money and the dates that was donated was given. The outcome that I am seeking is more medication being available for those who are not economically able to get it, and for them to have therapy available as many times as they need it. I aim to affect a minimum of 50 people with the donations that will be given.
