MA3710-R04 Syllabus

Basic Information
Instructor: James Wright E-mail: jcwright@mtu.edu Oce: Fisher 324 Oce Hours: Every Class Day the hour before & after class or by appointment. Class Times: 3:05pm - 3:55pm on MWF in Fisher 329 Book: Statistical Methods for Engineers by Vining & Kowalski (ISBN# 0-538-73518-X) Course Description: Introduction to the design, conduct, and analysis of statistical studies aimed at solving engineering problems. Topics include methods of data collection, descriptive and graphical methods, probability and probability models, statistical inference, control charts, design of experiments.

Homework
NO LATE HOMEWORK will be accepted, except with a university excused absence. Late is dened as any later than the end of class on the day in which it is due. You are allowed to work on the homework with your peers. Homework problems should be regarded as practice, and a time for you to learn the material with the help of your peers. Homework problems will be assigned daily , and collected two class days later . Of the homework problems assigned all will be graded for full credit on the following 5 point scale: 5 4 3 2 0 A correct answer or one with the smallest of mistakes. A nearly correct answer with minor mistakes. An answer with some mistakes. A good start at a correct answer or one with major mistakes. Nothing, or an answer equally as illuminating.

Exams
There will be three exams as well as a comprehensive nal exam. If an exam conicts with your schedule for legitimate reasons, notify me more than forty-eight hours in advance of the scheduled exam time to receive an alternate or make-up exam. Otherwise, you may forfeit that exam score. For each exam, you may have with you a Formula Sheet, that is one piece of 8.5 x 11 paper, upon which you may write anything (both sides!), because this class is not about memorizing formulas. You may also bring writing utensils and a Calculator (TI 83, 84, 85, 86, 89, or similar device) , nothing else is allowed to be used (that means: no translators, no iPods, no cell-phones, and so on). 1

Grade Breakdown
Your grade will be composed of: 25% Homework 50% Three Evening Exams 25% Comprehensive Final

House Rules
If you get an A (Raw score of 92% or higher) on the Final Exam you get an A in the class.

Chapter 1 Introduction to Data, Sampling, Experiments Chapter 2 Graphs and Charts Chapter 3 Probability, Random Variables (Discrete & Continuous) Exam I Thursday, Feb. 20th @ 6:00pm in Fisher 138 Chapter 4 Condence Intervals & Hypothesis Tests Exam II Thursday, Mar. 20th @ 6:00pm in Fisher 329. Chapter 5 Control Charts Chapter 6 Simple Linear Regression & Correlation Exam III Monday. Apr. 21st @ 6:00pm in Fisher 138. Final Exam This will most likely be on the Wednesday of Finals week at 3:00pm.
