Topics include the concept of combustion process, design aspects of two-stroke SI engine, supercharging and turbocharging, thermodynamic analysis of fuel-air cycle, firing order, lubrication system, cooling system and engine heat transfer, fuel injection system in SI engines, Transmission system, gears, steering and suspension., CI engines and conventional and non-conventional fuels in SI and CI engines. Students would be able to understand the working and design of different type of IC engines. The course also includes a demonstrative lab for detailed understanding of the different types of engines.

Major Topics: Classification of Internal Combustion Engines (IC) and its applications. Understand the combustion process and design aspects of the Spark Ignition (SI) engines. Analysis of the Fuel-Air cycle in SI engines. Develop understanding of firing order in multi-cylinder engines, as well as engine design and engine operating parameters. Develop an understanding of engine cooling systems, engine heat transfer and lubrication systems in the SI engines. Develop an understanding of the Fuel injection system and emission standards. Develop an understanding of Compression Ignition (CI) engines. Transmission Train, Clutches and Gear box. Suspension system and steering system. Develop understanding of various types of Conventional fuels used in IC engines as well as Non-Conventional fuels. which can be found at http://www.alfaisal.edu/student/Undergrad_Student_Guide.pdf. Specific date for final exam will be announced by the Registrar towards the end of the semester. Sessional dates, in addition to deadlines for registration and withdrawal can be found at http://www.alfaisal.edu/student/Alfaisal%20University%20Academic%20Calendar%202013%2 0-2014.pdf Once deadlines and exam dates are announced, there will be no rescheduling allowed. In the event of unforeseeable circumstances where the University suspends classes, in-session submissions and exams will automatically be rescheduled to the following session. Submissions past the deadline will be penalized, and will not be accepted past two days after the deadline. The guide states that if the number of absences exceeds 15% of the scheduled classes, a failing grade (F) may be issued for the student by the faculty. Excessive absenteeism will be reported, and may result in a loss of eligibility for scholarship and/or an administrative withdrawal from the course the University. Arrivals to lectures, tutorials or labs exceeding 15 minutes from the start of the lab will be considered an absence. University policy states that cheating, including plagiarism is a scholastic offence. The commission of a scholastic offence is attended by academic penalties that might include expulsion from the program. MOODLE will be used by the instructors to post announcements and messages concerning the course. It is the students responsibility to read the website and be aware of any information t hat is posted about the course.
