Preston Edward Howerton
Preston Pete Edward Howerton, died Monday, March 17, 2014 at his home in Des Arc. Pete was born October 26, 1964 in Brinkley, Arkansas to Charles Lloyd and Ruthel (Shirley) Howerton. Survivors include two daughters, Kaitlin Howerton, Carlee Howerton, two sisters, Louise White, Linda Howerton, two brothers, Jimmy Howerton, Charles Stanley. Pete was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was Wednesday, March 19 from 5:00 until 8:00. Funeral services were 2:00 P M Thursday, March 20, at Lakeside Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Johnson Chapel Cemetery by Garth Funeral Home. Bro. Gary Wilson officiating. Ronald Eugene Scarborough, 69, passed a w a y Wednesday March 19, 2014, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Funeral was 4 p.m. Saturday at Center Point Baptist Church in Hazen, AR. Westbrook Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Interment was Center Point Cemetery in Hazen. Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst. Ronald was born June 19 1944, in Yorkville, Tenn. to Jesse and Ava Scarborough. Ron worked
for American Airlines for 36 years, retiring in 2003. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rachel Cobb; niece, Heather Jones; father-inlaw, Bill Swaim, brotherin-law, Clea Swaim; and sisters-in-law, Nell Ballard and Ida Mae Linam. Survivors left to cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Jessica; sons, Lee (Amy) of Fort Worth and their sons, Hayden and Graysen, and Jason (Monica) of North Richland Hills and their children, Braelyn, Luke and Ava Kate; sisters, Marilyn (Woody) Clifton of Dyersburg, Tenn. and Carolyn (Dan) LaRoe of San Antonio, TX; brothers Joe (Martha) of Humbolt, Tenn.; Charlie (Linda) Scarborough of Three Way, TN; Benny (Kathy) Scarborough of Dyersburg, TN; mother-in-law Bessie Swaim of Hazen AR and many good friends and family. A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Don White, was 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church. William Kevin Mullen, 51, of Des Arc, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 in White County Medical Center in Searcy, Arkansas. Kevin was born March 28, 1962 in Searcy, Arkansas to G. P . and Billie (Turnley) Mullen. Survivors include his mother, Billie F . Mullen, one sister, one brother, three nieces and one nephew. Kevin was preceded in death by his father G. P . Mullen. By Ethylene Bowen Alice Foot spent the weekend with her son Charlie and his wife Debbie Foot in Smackover, Ar. Don Foot was in Little Rock on Wednesday to do a little shopping then enjoyed lunch with his son Jimmy and his wife, Lana. It's Spring Break, Hurray! "No bus driving for me this week" said Janet King! Rita Foot had surgery on her thumb Thursday. She will be out of commission for about three weeks. Sharyn Golleher went to the doctor at Sherwood Urgent Care at Lonoke on Thursday morning with back and neck problems. Faith Duell finally lost her tooth on Friday night! How did that happen, Faith? Arnold and Markolita Black and Don Foot attended church on Sunday in Stuttgart then had dinner at the Great Wall before going to Walmart to do some shopping. Paige Guenther spent the weekend visiting her dad, Tim Guenther and the rest of the family. Ethylene Bowen visited with her daughter-in-law, Regina Golleher and her grandson, Chris on Saturday afternoon. Kenny and Rita Foot, Ginger and Jimmy Shelman, John Foot and Kevin and Jeanette and Bart Bednar and all their family had supper on Saturday night at the El Amigo Mexican Restaurant in Hazen. Barbara Rogers went to Wheatley Friday night with Kevin, Christie and Haley and Jeff, Andrea and Abby Rounsavall to eat at the Cajun Express. Kathy Hughes and Katrina Cotton went to Palestine on Friday night to watch Kallie play softball. Clarendon lost but played a good game. Kallie Cotton was accepted at Camp Mitchell for Junior Counselor for two sessions. First job with all fun on Petit Jean Mountain. Edna Gaddy Johnston visited her daughter in Sherwood on Saturday and enjoyed shopping for Angie who is going on a business trip to Hawaii. Kallie Cotton, Taylor Harpo, Kobe Cotton, Braydon VanHouten along with Katrina Cotton and Bob Zachery went to Little Rock so the kids could go to "Attitude" Trampoline game place! Thank goodness for the young! Last Monday, Vince King took a ride with Aunt Cindy to see Mattie, BonBon and Uncle Boh! On Saturday, Destiny Roberts, BonBon Rodrigues and Cindy Rodrigues spent the afternoon with Kimberly Snyder and Ethan Smith in Hazen watching "Frozen" and enjoying each others company. Mattie Owens was gone to her dads for Spring Break, shopping with Regina Owens and Frankie Willeford in Little Rock. Kobe Cotton made G.T. and they were so pleased. Ethylene Bowen and Becky Pearrow did some shopping at Walmart's on Sunday afternoon in Stuttgart.

Hands-on activities are scheduled for 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 through Friday, March 28. Pioneer crafts scheduled for Spring Break include: Tuesday: Make a traditional pioneer corn husk doll. Wednesday: Learn about weaving while making a potholder. Thursday: Play old fashioned games and make old fashioned toys. Friday: Learn how to finger knit no needles required! Dale R. Cash (left) was presented an Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Hazen, AR Masonic Lodge #361 Thursday, March 13 by member Jimmy McDaniel. The honor was presented at their regular monthly meeting and was given for dedicated work and service to the Masonic Lodge. Dale was initiated in March of 1984 and raised to a Master Mason in July of 1984. He has been Worshipful Master of Carlisle #587 and Hazen #361 lodge. Hazen Lodge #361 invites everyone to their scholarship breakfast April 5, from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. The breakfast helps raise money for a scholarship for a local senior at Hazen High School.
Hazen Lodge will have its 12th Annual Scholarship Breakfast on Saturday, April 5th, 2014, from 6:00 am to 9:00 am. The proceeds of the breakfast will go into our scholarship fund from which we will award a $1,000.00 scholarship to a deserving Hazen High School 2014 graduate. We ask the community to come and support this event so we can continue to help a deserving Hazen student in his continuing education. The cost is $7.00 in advance or $8.00 at the door. Bobby L. Glover Former State Senator Bobby L. Glover of Carlisle has been reappointed by Governor Mike Beebe to a new seven year term to the Arkansas Board of Corrections. The Board oversees the operations of the Arkansas Department of Correction (ADC), Arkansas Community Correction (ACC), and the Arkansas Correctional School System. Glover, a 28 year veteran of the legislature, left the Senate at the end of 2010 because of the term limits amendment to the state Constitution. Throughout his legislative career he has taken an active role in law enforcement issues. "I'm very grateful to Governor Beebe for this reappointment," Glover said. The Hazen Elementary had their Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 20. Parents got to discuss how their children were doing in class and activities. Also at the PTC, the book fair returned for the second time this school year. GT teacher/sponsor Lisa Martin and Literacy Specialist Wendy Perry greeted parents and students as they arrived.

Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Owens, Mrs. Hannah Medlock and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Curlett Sr., attended a surprise Birthday supper celebrating Mr. Robert Curletts Birthday, Tuesday evening, March, 11, at the home of Clevella Mosby. Edna Chase from Des Arc, visited Clevella Mosby last Thursday evening. Maude Saxton is reported to be doing well at this writing. Fellowship Revival will be held at Prairie Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Hazen, Rev.Oscar Washington Sr, pastor, starting Monday March 31 and concluding April 2 at 7:00 p.m. nightly. Churches taking part include, Mt. Olive, DeValls Bluff, Pleasant Ridge, Hickory Plains, Mt. Zion, Macedonia and Mt. Canaan, Carlisle and Mt. Carmel, Roe. The theme Psalms 23:3. Need-b based scholarships available for those entering Miss Fort Lincoln Pageant
The Miss Fort Lincoln Pageant will be held Saturday, April 12, at the DeValls Bluff Community Center. Ages 0-21 will be eligible for competition. The 0-12 year old pageant will begin at 11:00 AM, and the 13-21 year old pageant will begin at 5:30 PM. If you are in need of a scholarship for a dress to compete or financial help with pageant fees, please note that there are two need-based scholarships available. The pageant seeks to include girls who normally aren't involved in pageants and/or who have financial need. The prizes this year will be phenomenal. All queens will receive a crown, sash, and prize pack. Queens will also receive two tickets to the Fort Lincoln Southern Heritage Dinner on April the 26th. Queens will also be the face of Fort Lincoln Festival on May 10th. The Teen Miss Fort Lincoln will receive a $250 scholarship, and Miss Fort Lincoln will win a $500 scholarship! Talent winners will receive a prize and will perform at Fort Lincoln Festival on the main stage. Interview and photogenic winners will receive a prize as well. The Miss Fort Lincoln Pageant is a pageant that celebrates the contestants beauty, poise, personality, and spirit. This is a pageant for first timers and pageant veterans alike. Both teams bats went silent until the top of the fifth when the Hornets were able to break through for another run. With one out Williams knocked a single to left, and Johnson drew a walk. Kee knocked a single up the middle to score Williams from second and give the Hornets a 9-2 lead. The Rebels got 1 run back in the bottom of the 5th. A leadoff double and a walk put runners on and a single to left scored the Rebels 3rd run. After hitting his second batter to load the bases, Ingle was replaced on the bump by Kee. Kee struck out 2 straight and fielded a grounder back to the mound to end the Rebel rally. The Hornets put up their final run in the top of the 7th inning. With two out, designated hitter Kelby Martin drew a walk and pinch runner Adam Alexander took over on the bases. Harrison drew a walk to put Alexander in scoring position, and a single to left by Ingle drove in Alexander to give the Hornets a 10-3 lead. Kee ended the game with a pop out, ground out, and strikeout for the Hornets 5th win. The Hornets hosted their first conference home games on Friday evening against the Brinkley Tigers, and gave up only 1 run through 8 innings in 2 mercy-rule-shortened games that saw the Hornets put up 26 runs while striking out 6 on the way to his first win of the year. The Hornets started their scoring onslaught slowly with 1 run in the bottom of the 1st. A lead off his by Gage Johnson and a walk to Cody Kee put runners on base. Both Johnson and Kee advanced on a double steal. With one out, designated hitter Colton Felts grounded out too short to drive in Johnson from third. The use of small ball gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead. The Hornets extended their lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Junior right fielder Lucas Tenison drew a leadoff walk and stole 2nd to start the rally. With one out third baseman Colby Rollins drove in Tenison with a single to right. A walk to Williams put runners on 1st and 2nd. Johnson knocked a single to left, but Rollins was thrown out at the plate. Williams and Johnson advanced to 2nd and 3rd on the throw home. Kee pushed both runners across with a single to center to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead after the 2nd. The Tigers got their lone run of the day when a miscue by Rollins put a runner on 2nd with 1 out for the Tigers. A passed ball moved the base runner to 3rd, and the only hit given up by Hornet pitching shortened the Hornet lead to 4-1 in the middle of the 3rd. The Hornets put 2 across in the bottom of the 3rd. The Hornets pitching and hitting made short work of the Brinkley Tigers in the second game of the doubleheader. Gage Johnson and Zach Dale combined for 7 strikeouts and a nohitter in only 3 innings of play. Johnson Kd 4 of 6 batters faced. Dale struck out the side in the 3rd and the only blemish came on a lone walk in his inning on the hill. Offensively the Hornets started early and often. Johnson led off reaching on an error by the Tigers 3rd baseman, and quickly stole 2nd. Walks to catcher Hunter Ingle and center fielder Chase VanHouten loaded the bases before Johnson scored on a passed ball to give the Hornets a 10 lead. A walk to DH Kelby Martin loaded the bases again. Courtesy runner for Hunter Ingle, Drake Ingle, was caught trying to steal home on a passed ball, but a walk to right fielder Cody Kee loaded the bases again. With 2 outs, VanHouten scored on a passed ball, and Colby Rollins was hit by a pitch to keep the bases loaded. 2nd baseman Brenon Williams doubled to left center to score Martin and Kee. pitch at bat, Hall drew a walk to load the bases. The final run of the inning came thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Johnson to give the Hornets an 11-0 lead. The Hornets reached the brink of victory by putting up 4 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Four straight singles by VanHouten, Martin, Kee, and Tenison gave the Hornets their first 2 runs of the inning. After VanHouten scored on a passed ball, Tenisons single plated Martin. With one out, Williams grounded out to 3rd to score Kee from third. Hall drove in the final run of the game when a single to left knocked in Tenison for the Hornets 15th run. Dale shut the door on the contest by striking out the side in the bottom of the 3rd to end the game due to the mercy rule. On the week the bottom of the lineup really stood out for the Hornets. Lucas Tenison led the way by going 4of-5 at the plate with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored. Cody Kee followed going 5-of-9 with 7 RBI and 3 runs scored. And Brenon Williams rounded out the top performers going 4-of-7 with 4 RBI and 5 runs scored. The Hornets will be taking on Abundant Life this week with two games over two days. The Hornets will travel to Abundant Life on Thursday and will host the Owls on Friday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm.

He gave up 2 hits between 2 strikeouts, but a walk and a hit batsman scored the first Rebel run of the game. A third strikeout ended the inning, but score at 2-2. Pinch runner Alundis Mosby and VanHouten advanced to second and third on a passed ball. VanHouten scored when junior left fielder Josh Harrison hit a bloop single to center.
