Instrumen 1 A. Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. Tun Dr Ismail bin Dato Abdul Rahman was born on 4 November , 1915 in Johor Bahru. Tun Dr Ismail was a medical doctor trained in Singapore and Melbourne. He entered Malaysian politics in 1951 when he was selected as vice president of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO). Tun Dr Ismail participated actively in the negotiations leading to the independence of Malaya in 1957. After the independence, he joined the first Cabinet and held various portfolios. He was our first Ambassador to Washington D.C. as well as a Malaysian representative in the United Nations from 1957 to 1959. On his return, he re-joined the Cabinet and held the important portfolios of Internal Security and Home Affairs. He resigned from the Cabinet in June 1967 due to ill health but still served in the Parliament. However, he rejoined the Cabinet in 1969 after the serious racial riots in Kuala Lumpur contributed much in reducing racial tension and in bringing back stability in the country. Tun Dr Ismail was appointed the Deputy Prime Minister in 1970. His career ended when he succumbed to a heart attack three years later.
