Department of Mechanical Engineering

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Instructions
About 15 years ago, we used to teach Engineering Drawing in 3 semesters. At that time, we could give good exposure in sketching, drawing, machine design and 2D&3D CAD modeling. Since we have only one course now, we shall teach in this single course (a) sketching, (b) manual drawings, (c) 2D CAD using AutoCAD, (d) 3D CAD using SolidWorks and (e) 3D printing of the 3D CAD models.
There will not be any formal training in sketching. However, you shall reserve a sketch book exclusively for this course. After every lecture class, practice the problems in the sketch book and bring them to the class.

Instructions
In this course, you will use most of the time drafting board and instruments to render your drawings. Some CAD exercises will be given which you will do in your hostels and submit. We also have about 10 PCs for this purpose in Drawing Hall. We have ordered 90 PCs. So, from next semester, you can do CAD in the Hall itself. We are developing a new table which can accommodate both the drawing board and the PC.

Instructions
There are machines that can print your 3D CAD models. They are known as 3D Printers. We have ordered five such machines exclusively for this course. You can convert your 3D CAD models into physical models using them or CNC machines.

Totally automated 2D printing (Lithography)

Totally automated 3D printing (Stereo-lithography)

Instructions
We need to cover a vast syllabus in 13 sheets. So, it is important for you to spend adequate time before coming to these lectures as well as the drawing sessions.
Quickly skim through Chapters 1-5 of N.D. Bhats book that cover the basic things such as Use of drawing instruments Sheet layout and Freehand sketching Lines, Lettering and Dimensioning Scales Geometrical constructions

Instructions
Drawing Sheet & Board
Use only A3 (420 x 297) drawing sheets.
Fix the sheets firmly on all four corners with cello tapes. No clips or pins are allowed.

Bring a good cello tape dispenser (3M Magic). This costs less than Rs. 100 and it will be enough for your entire curriculum in IIT. Paper cutter is prohibited. Scissors will be allowed on for the last sheet.
Before fixing the sheet, remove any cello tape of the previous use on the drawing board and repeat the same while leaving the hall. Use the tilting arrangement of the drawing board.

Instructions
Pencil
Do not use conventional pencils and sharpeners. Use 0.5mm dia collet pencil (Staedler).
Bring at least 2 pencils, one for HB and the other for 2B. One more can be reserved for the compus. Staedler brand is recommended. If you use Staedler, use their lead only. In addition to the standard black lead, RED color leads are also available but are more expensive. You are welcome to use them. You will find them useful when you construct overlapping objects. Grade of the pencil lead and the pressure you apply can be nicely combined to achieve lines of different thicknesses. If you rotate the pencil as you draw, you will get finer line.

Instructions
Guidance in the Drawing Hall
One professor and some TAs/ RAs will be available in the hall to guide you.
You are also welcome to discuss with your friends.

Instructions
Compensatory Classes
80% attendance is compulsory both in lectures and drawing sessions.
All sheets shall be completed. Otherwise, you will loose marks.

When you miss, compensate by contacting any of the RAs (not TAs).
No girl student will work alone in the drawing hall at any time.

Thank You!
