Grave Of The Fireflies By Nosaka Akiyuki This book is a semi-autobiographical war novel that depicts a story about two siblings struggling to live during the World-War II period in Japan . This story was based on a fact whom the author had the same experience as Seita, the older brother of Setsuko, the main characters of this novel. The author adapted his story and create another version that accurately portrayed the daily condition of what was happening back then. The author begins the plot with the ending, whereas Seita managed to survive the war, but he lost his sister. As the story goes, it unravels his journey from the first he lost his parents, until he lost his sister to a malnutrition and starvation. Rather than focusing heavily on the details of war, the author chooses to focus more on physical, psychological and social condition from the main characters point of view, in this case, orphans. The details also include the relationship between the main characters, the relationship between the main characters and its surroundings, and so on. What really made this book stands out from other novels of the same genre, is that the author really made this story from a private point of view so that the readers themselves could actually feel the pain and loss, that the main characters are experiencing. Its realistic background, its detailed surroundings, and its fact-based story are the main factor that make this novel is arguably one of the best war novel ever written in history. But there is also minus points that make this book unrecognized by the mainstream media. First, the story puts too much focus on the main characters. It would be nice if the author also adds another character so that the story wouldnt be too flat. Second, its emotional messages and values are too intense. Some readers may find it interesting, but there is also readers who doesnt want to get too involved in the story, as it will inflict the readers psychological condition in a way that they will never imagine. But nonetheless, this book was heavily recommended by literature experts throughout the word. It sets an example, of how emotional a story could be, if it was based on a true story. This book really affects a lot of people, mostly in Japan, and it is considered as a classic novel.
