A very good morning to Senior Principle, Mr. Yu Weng Hong; Senior Assistant, Pn. Rosna, teachers and students.

Slide 1: Today Im going to talk about a topic which is concerning students especially now just after the assessment. The topic is Why Students Fail? Slide 2: Lets have something light and easy before we enter into the main 6 reasons. Well, what do you think, whats the reason leading to the failure in assessment or examination? Slide 3: Lets look at the typical academic year for a student. In a year we have 365 days, which comprises of 52 weeks, which means that we have 52 Sundays in a year, and Sunday is meant for resting. Now we left with 313 days. Let see we have quite a number of school holidays, say about 50 days? And Malaysia is always hot weather which is good for sleeping and not studying. Minus these 50 days, we left about 263 days. We need 8 hours daily sleep and perhaps 30 minutes nap per day. It means sleeping take about 130 days. Now we left 141 days. We need physical practice which is good for health, lets take 1 hour games per day, which means you need 15 days for playing in a year. Slide 4: Now we left with 126 days. 2 hours daily for food which included your breakfast, morning tea break, lunch, afternoon tea break, dinner and supper. This conclusive to about 30 days in a year spent on eating. Now left 96 days. As man is a social animal, say spending 1 hour each day on talking, total you used 15 days in a year on talking. Now left 81 days. We take about 35 days in a year for exam and assessment. Now left 46 days. We still have Chinese New Year Holidays, Hari Raya, Thaipussam, Christmas holidays which counted to about 40 days. Festivals are meant for celebrating and not studying.

Slide 5: So, we left 6 days now. Let assume we are healthy and only sick for about 3 days in a year. Now we left 3 days. Movies, wedding dinner, functions take at least 2 days. So you got 1 day left. And, that 1 day is your birthday. How can you study at that day?? Conclusion is, how can a student pass?? Slide 6: All the above is just a joke. And it actually reflected to the First Reason why students fail. Students have poor time management that you spent much time on entertainment rather than your studies. You have to make a time table for yourself which allocated accurate time for your meal, studies, resting and playing. Slide 7: Secondly, students always do not make enough revision or study before coming to examination. Last minute study to stuff your brain with all subjects in one night will not do for good results. Burning the midnight oil will not help you in study and in fact, it will create more anxiety and causes low performance in exam. Slide 8: Some inappropriate study habit for example like to study on bed, eventually will end up falling into sleep. Some even study with their pets, and eventually get distracted by the pets. Slide 9: I can always see the students scratching hair, holding tight your head, or scattered your stationary on your table. This all reflecting that you are anxious in the exam! A little anxiety is a good thing. It keeps people motivated and alert. Too much, however, may result in dysfunction. Slide 10: Ok, well, most of you did so in the exam room. You rather spend time on sleeping or playing with your stationary than checking your answer. All this wasting time activities normally will resulted to careless mistake in your answer paper.

Slide 11: The last reason here is Poor Language skills. To a large extent, the success or failure of a student directly related on mastery of the language. A student must be able to read, to write, to speak, and to listen effectively. Being ineffective in even one of these language abilities can lead to academic difficulty. These language problems are not necessarily related to intelligence, and skill in one language area does not mean equal skill in the others. If you can understand those Korean languages, which is not learned in proper education in school, then theres really no reason for you to not understand either English or Malays language that you learned at 6 years old! Slide 12: Success needs focus. As quoted from an American author of motivation, Zig Ziglar, Lack of direction, not lack of time , is the problem. We all have 24 hour days. Slide 13: Thanks for your attention.
