Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

Dear Eastminster Family, Lent is a time of self-denial and renewed reflection on Jesus ultimate sacrifice. As Holy Week comes into focus on the near horizon, I encourage you to use the under construction signs seen around our Sanctuary as an encouragement in your own spiritual journey. Open your heart to Gods renovating and transforming work in your life, and permit the small inconveniences we will face in the construction process to prompt you to consider Christs great suffering on our behalf. On a related note, with the sanctuary renovation ramping up, will you please: 1. Pray about helping us meet the need. The project will cost $3,525,000, of which roughly $3,300,000 is currently pledged from 350 family units. That leaves a remaining need of about six percent, or $225,000. Lets all pull together and get this done by Easter. Toward that end, Nancy and I are increasing our pledge, and I ask you to pray about doing the same. Simply email treasurer Christy Rippy at crippy@eastminsterpres.org with any changes. 2. Pray for the men and women who are doing our renovation work. Pray for their safety and that they would see that they are not merely doing masonry, plumbing or electrical work, but that they are using their talents to the glory of God, and pray that they would draw closer to Christ through this process. 3. Be patient and work together. Whether parking challenges, disrupted pedestrian patterns or other logistical hurdles, we will face inconveniences in the coming months. Lets respond, however, with patience and even enthusiasm, knowing the short-term inconveniences will lead to long-term improvements. By way of reminder, our traditional worship services will continue in the sanctuary through April. Beginning May 4 and up until Rally Day, worship will take place in the Christian Life Center, and the sanctuary will be unavailable. The Jubilee Service will continue in Thompson Hall throughout. In Christs love,

Have you ever wondered what kind of meal Christ shared with his disciples at the Last Supper? Join us on Maundy Thursday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m. for the Eastminster Seder Meal. It is the traditional Passover Week Dinner celebrated by the Hebrews since the Exodus. It is the Hebrew thanksgiving to God for deliverance and redemption. The Seder consists of a number of ceremonies and symbols that help us remember the trials of the Hebrews of the Exodus - their embittered life of bondage and the joy of their subsequent triumph of freedom. Seating begins at 5:45 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. meal in Thompson Hall. We request that you be on time for the meal. This is a family meal, and childcare is available from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for infants through age 5 in the nursery drop-off rooms. The dinner is $6.00, and reservations must be made by calling the receptionist at 256-1654 by Friday, April 11 or sign up at www.eastminsterpres.org. Seating is limited, so please reserve early! The dinner will be followed by a Maundy Thursday Communion Service at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. You do not have to attend the Seder meal to attend the Maundy Thursday Service at 7:00 p.m. All Eastminster Ladies (non-members as well as members) are invited to attend at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Thompson Sisters Hall. We will have a speaker from Stop Hunger Now. You may have in Christ participated in packing thousands of Stop Hunger Now (SHN) meals in the CLC last year. Another packing will take place on April 6. This luncheon is an opportunity to contribute to the offering for SHN. The offering is voluntary with the hope of making an impact on this worthwhile mission. To register please call Mary Baldauf, or e-mail Mary (mbaldauf@eastminsterpres.org) to sign up. The cost of the meal is $6.

On Monday and Tuesday, April 14 and 15, the sanctuary, administration building and a portion of the CE building will not have power. The power outage is due to the replacement of the transformer that is original to the building. Although staff will be at work, they will be limited in their ability to accomplish many tasks. We ask that if you are planning a meeting for that week, please choose Wednesday - Friday for your meeting. Are you a young adult in your 20s or 30s and wish to get involved in a Sunday school class? The Gift Sunday School Class invites you to join them in serving at Transitions Shelter on April 17. Serving with other young adults from EPC promises to be an enlightening night. Come out and meet other young adults and learn more about Columbias homeless. Contact Laura Long at laurapricelong@att.net to sign up for Transitions or contact Rebekah Gaston at helton.r.e@gmail.com to learn more about the Gift Sunday School Class.

The Flower Guild is accepting memorials and honoraria for Easter lilies to decorate the sanctuary for Easter. Please write the wording you wish to have printed in the bulletin and enclose a check for $15.00 made out to the Eastminster Flower Guild for each lily. Checks may be mailed to the church or placed in the Flower Guild box in the workroom. Forms are available in the reception area. The deadline for your order is Wednesday, April 9 . Lilies may be removed by the donor from the sanctuary after the 10:30 a.m. service on Easter. A special Womens Self Defense class will be offered at Eastminster on Saturday, April 12, from 9:00 a. m. to 1:00 p. m. in CLC rooms 271-273. The class, open to Eastminster members and the community, is conducted by the Richland County Sheriffs Office, with sponsorship by STS of the Midlands. There is no cost to participants. For more information or to sign up, contact Bill Ketchin at bketchin@ eastminsterpres.org or call (803) 256-1654. Be sure to sign up early as class size is very limited! Please join us in the Adult Reception Hall during the Sunday school hour on April 6, to hear from two mission co-workers who are serving in India and other south Asian countries (with high security concerns). Their ministry addresses global issues of poverty, evangelism and reconciliation. Prior to their commissioning as mission workers, they taught at Montreat College. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to all four mornings with open hearts for where we can place you. This is with the exception of those who want to shepherd their own childs class. (Just chaperone and relationship-build with the kids...no lessons to teach!) Please let us know if you want to be with your child. If you are willing to volunteer all four mornings, we will register your children for a guaranteed spot. Also, if you volunteer and have younger siblings in your household (babies - rising 3K), our CLC Drop-In Nursery is open that week FREE of charge for VBS volunteers with younger children. If youd like to volunteer for all 4 mornings, please e-mail Croskeys at croyall@eastminsterpres.org. Photography has started, But It Is nOt tOO Late tO sIGn uP. We still have slots available and would like to have 50% of families in the church participate. If you have not yet taken the time to sign up, please do and help Us meet oUr goal!
