Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) for Rehabilitation Professionals

Instructor: Shane Kachur, BMR(PT) graduated from the University of Manitoba Physical Therapy program in 1996. His initial focus was in orthopedics, specifically manipulative therapy, and he completed course work in this area at St. Augustine University, St. Augustine, Florida (established by Dr. S. Paris). His focus shifted into the realm of chronic pain and he plans to complete his Master of Science degree this year, studying chronic pain under Dr. G.J.G. Asmundson at the University of Regina. As an active part of Dr. Asmundsons Anxiety and Illness Behaviour Laboratory, Mr. Kachur has authored and contributed to many national and international scientific conferences and has published in several peer reviewed journals on chronic pain and disability.
Shane Kachur has always had a passion for Chinese martial arts and for the last 23 years has traveled around Canada, USA, and China to study with the worlds top Taijiquan/Kung Fu masters. He has been a member of and eventually coached the Manitoba Provincial Wushu Team in 2001. He has won bronze at the Canadian National Wushu Championships in 1995 and the Pan-American Wushu Championships in 1998. He retired from competition in 2000 after winning Gold at Madison Square Garden in New York City. He now lives and works in Regina, SK treating people with chronic pain and disability. Shane Kachur also runs his own martial art school, the Progressive Wushu Centre, with his wife, June Liu. In addition to teaching standard Taijiquan they also focus on using Taijiquan as a therapeutic technique, teaching Taijiquan based programs for Parkinsons Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Finally, Shane has been presenting research on Taijiquan, most recently at the International Taijiquan Forum and is working with an international group developing a standardized therapeutic Taijiquan program.

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide basic fundamental understanding of Taijiquan to be used by
rehabilitation professionals in the clinical environment. This course will present the scientific state of the art on Taijiquan treatment effectiveness on balance, posture, and fear of falling. In addition, it will utilize the scientific evidence to explain how Taijiquan accomplishes these effects. Furthermore, an endeavor will be made to expose participants to the traditional Chinese concepts behind Taijiquan in both terms of Yin-Yang motion theories as well as to discuss how understanding its martial tradition may enhance treatment effects.

Target Audience: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy Assistants,
Chiropractors and other health professionals.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should have a basic understanding of:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The history of and general knowledge of the various styles of Taijiquan. Yin-Yang motion theories and the four basic Taijiquan energies (Peng, Liu, Ji, and An). The science behind Taijiquan, posture control, and ground reaction force with Taijiquan movement. The importance of fear of falling and gait mechanics. Taiji Shang Bu (Taijiquan forward stepping), Jin Ji Du Li (Golden rooster stands on one leg), Yun Shou (Wave hands like the clouds), Ye Ma Fen Zeng (Part wild horses mane), Lou Xi Ao Bu (Brush knee bush), Hai Di Lao Zhen (Needle to sea bottom), and Lan Que Wei (Grasp the birds tail). 6. Uses of Tui Shou and postural control (Push hands).

Courses are subject to cancellation if minimum number of applicants are not received by January 22, 2010. In this case, a full refund will be provided. Refund for withdrawal from the course shall be subject to date of notification of withdrawal. If notification of withdrawal is received by the CPTE Program Coordinator prior to 1:00 pm on January 22, 2010, a handling fee of $30.00 will be withheld on all refunds. If notification of withdrawal is received after that time, the participant will not be refunded unless the position can be filled. Even if the course has been confirmed, CPTE is not responsible for travel/accommodation costs booked in advance, in the event of sudden unavoidable cancellation of the course (ie. instructor illness, Acts of God).
