Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

NAEYC Standard 5: Using Content Knowledge to Build Meaningful Curriculum Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum. They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young child. (NAEYC, 2011)

Brief Description of Evidence:

The eight lesson plans I created for the multiple intelligence unit in my ECED 243 course were designed to promote and develop each of the eight multiple intelligences based on Howard Gardners theory of Multiple Intelligences. The lesson plans were created around a theme selected, based on the childrens interests, and required the use of the Indiana Foundations along with measurable objectives.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through the creation and implementation of the eight lesson plans I learned how to use the interest of the children to design multiple activities in which developed their cognitive abilities through different domains. I learned how to modify my lesson plans in order to gain and keep the attention of the children. The implementation of the activities afforded me the opportunity to learn which areas I needed to work on in my presentations to better promote comprehensive developmental learning outcomes for every young child.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This artifact demonstrates my competence in NAEYC Standard 5 by illustrating my knowledge of academic disciplines in order to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for each and every young child. This artifact further shows my ability locate resources in order to create lesson plans containing clear developmental objectives and evaluate the outcomes. The artifact demonstrates my ability to extend the subjects by using Gardners theory of multiple intelligences so that I can benefit each child positively based on his/her learning style.
