Learn how to KNIT a Phone Case

Knit a Phone Case

A cute case for your mobile phone can be made from a knitted rectangle folded in half. The main fabric is in stocking stitch, with a couple of ridges for decorative interest.

How to Knit Seams

The example below shows yarns of a contrasting colour used to join pieces of knitted fabric together, but you should use the same yarn as you used for knitting. In most cases, seams need to be as neat and invisible as possible; untidy seams spoil the look of a nished item. Pattern instructions usually offer guidance about which method to use.

Instructions
Difculty Level Easy Size 11.5 x 6cm (41 2 x 23 8in) Yarn Rowan Pure Wool DK 50g A: 19 Avocado x 1 Sirdar Country Style DK 50g B: 398 Macaroon x 1 Needles 1 pair of 4mm (UK8/US6) needles Tension 22sts and 28 rows to 10cm (4in) over st st on 4mm (UK8/US6) needles

Backstitch seam

Tip Backstitch seams can be worked on most knitted fabrics, apart from very bulky knits, on side seams as well as on cast-off edges. The seam creates a ridge on the inside. Align the edges of the pieces to be joined, with right sides together. Secure the yarn on the right-hand edge, then make one stitch forwards. Bring the needle back to the starting point of the previous stitch, and repeat. Stitch as close to the edges of the fabric pieces as possible, so that the nished inside seam is not too bulky.

Pattern
Using 4mm (UK8/US6) needles and yarn A, cast on 18 sts. Row 1: K. Row 2: P. Rep rows 1 and 2 (stocking stitch) 6 times. Row 15: P. Row 16: K. Rep rows 116 four times more, then rows 1 and 2 six times more, until work measures 23cm (9in), ending with RS facing. Cast off loosely and fasten off, leaving a long tail of yarn. Button loop Using 4mm (UK8/US6) needles and yarn B, cast on 24 stitches, turn, and cast off.

Making up Fold knitted fabric in half with wrong sides together and ends matching. Sew side seams in backstitch (see opposite). Weave in all yarn ends. Turn right side out. For the button loop, form the strip of knitting into a loop and stitch the ends together. Stitch the loop to the top of the back section of the cover. Stitch a button to the front of the cover, close to the top edge.
