LESSON PLAN Inside of an Apple Direct Tuesday, October 15th, 2013 Duration of lesson: Approximately 45 minutes Benchmark Focus:

Common core L.HE.E.1- Identify observable characteristics of a plant L.OL.E.2- Understand that plants have life cycles Objective: After the direct lesson, the first grade students will be able to identify and label all the parts of the inside of an apple. After the direct lesson, the first grade students will be able to explain how the parts of the apple help the apple grow/survive. 2:00 Anticipatory set- The Apple Star Story I would like to read you a story. Its an old story and it talks about the inside of our apples. But I would like to see what you know about the insides of apples. So I will give you a few minutes and I want you to draw me a picture about what you think an apple looks like on the inside. Off you go! Give students 5-10 minutes to diagram what they think the inside of an apple looks like. Prompt them to draw what it would look like cut in half, not what it looks like after they have eaten it. Also prompt them to label their apple if possible. Once every student is finished, have them regroup on the carpet. Okay boys and girls. We are going to learn about in the inside of the apples today. We will look at these pictures you drew a little later and compare them to what we will learn. But first, I would like to tell you a story. Read the apple star story (included at the end of the lesson). Use an apple for the demonstration. Materials: Pencils, crayons, colored pencils, markers The apple star story by an unknown author 2 apples (1 for anticipatory set and 1 for demonstration) Apple Core chart/diagram Paper plates Apple part labels 2:15 Providing information: Boys and girls, last week we did a lot of work as apple scientists, observing our apples and finding facts. But we only observed the outside. Today I want to teach you about what is inside an apple and what all the parts are called. In our story we found out that there is a star shape inside of apples. But lets look at the inside of the apple and see what else we can learn about the inside. Show inside of apple on document camera and prompt kids to notice

different parts of the apple, (i.e. skin, core, seeds, etc.). Explain what each part does (i.e. skin protects, core houses seeds, etc.) Now that we know the parts of the apple, lets label our chart with the words. Show labels and have students read. Ask them to place labels on the apple diagram chart. Once all the labels are on, point to labels and ask students to read together. 2:20- Now, I want you to make your own apple and labels so we can show everyone what we know about the inside of the apples! You all did such a great job with our chart, so now you will have your own, to show everyone how your growing to become an apple expert! Students will make their own inside of the apple model by using paper plates, labels, and crayons/markers. First they will use red coloring utensil to draw a line of red to represent the skin. They will then draw a core by using a yellow pencil. Lastly, the will make seeds and a stem. Take students through the diagram step by step starting with the outside and working inwards. Prompt them to tell you what part comes next to reinforce learning objective. Modeling: I will be modeling how to make the model apples as well as modeling the inside parts of an apple. Checking for Understanding: I will check for understanding by observing how students create their model and by making sure they have the correct labels in the correct places. I will also check for understanding at the end of the lesson when they share with me what they learned. Guided practice: Students will create their own models of the inside of an apple and correctly identify and label all parts. 2:40 Closure: At the end of the lesson I will ask students what was hard or easy about this lesson and what they would do next time to make it easier to identify their apple. They will also explain to me one thing they learned. This is the purpose for the entire lesson, so it is important that students understand that they can to indentify characteristics of plants and understand that fruits help carry the seeds to continue the apple trees life cycle. Independent practice: For independent practice, I ask that students recall all the parts of an apple. Assessment: I will first, informally check, by observing the students creating their model. I will then formally checking their models and asking what they learned at the end. Inclusion of Diverse Learners/Differentiated Instructions for the High, Average, and Low students: For the low students, I will allow students a longer time frame to complete the work and allow more inventing spelling. I will also assist when needed and monitor them more often. If I

see a student struggling, I may ask a higher level student to buddy up to help them successfully complete the activity. For high students, I will challenge them to come up with create ways to describe characteristics, allowing them to think about what they want to learn challenge them to think about apples in a new way. Im also challenging the students by asking them to label explain how the apple parts help the apple grow and survive. For the average students, I will challenge the students with new concepts, without overwhelming them. I also try to repeat ideas, processes, and foundations to help create new learning while supporting already taught knowledge. I will monitor them more often than the high students but will try to give them as much independence as possible.

The Apple Star Story. (author unknown)

Once there was a little boy who had played almost all day. He had played with all his toys and all the games he knew, and he could not think of anything else to do. So, he went to his mother and asked, Mother, what shall I do now? His mother said, I know about a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside. You can find it, if you go look for it. So the little boy went outside and there he met a little girl. He asked, Do you know where there is a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside? The little girl said, No, I dont know where there is a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside, but you can ask my daddy. He is a farmer and he knows lots of things. Hes down by the barn and maybe he can help you. So, the little boy went to the farmer down by the barn and said, Do you know where there is a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside? No, said the farmer, I dont know, but why dont you ask Grandmother. She is in her house up on the hill. She is very wise and knows many things. Maybe she can help you. So, the little boy went up the hill to Grandmothers and asked, Do you know where there is a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside? No, Grandmother answered, I dont know, but you ask Brother Wind, for Brother Wind goes everywhere, and I am sure he can help you. So, the little boy went outside and asked Brother Wind, Do you know where I can find a little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside? And Brother Wind said, Ooooohhhhh! And it sounded to the little boy as if the wind said, Come with me. So the little boy ran after Brother Wind. He ran through the grass and into the orchard and there on the ground he found the little house the little red house with no doors and no windows and a star inside! He picked it up, and it filled both of his hands. He ran home to his mother and said, Look, Mother! I found the little red house with no doors and no windows, but I cannot see the star! So this is what his mother did (cut the apple across the middle from side to side, not top to bottom) . Now I see the star! said the little boy.
