Case Study - Howard Whiteley and Jayne Potts

National interior landscaping company, Urban Planters, has opened a new franchise for Leeds and Bradford, the area where the company started up over 40 years ago. Howard Whiteley and Jayne Potts began trading this month and are both looking forward to bringing Urban Planters quality service, supplying and maintaining tropical plants for businesses in and around the Leeds and Bradford areas. Howard has a wealth of experience in running businesses. He has headed up engineering companies and property companies in the past and still acts as consultant for a food industry engineering design company. Over the years, whilst operating businesses in West Yorkshire, I have come across the well-known name of Urban Planters many times, so its great that we now have the opportunity to bring Urban Planters back to its birthplace said Howard. What attracted me to an Urban Planters franchise, apart from its reputation, is the opportunity to run a business with a strong local identity while at the same time being part of a national network, with full support and training on offer. Howard and Jayne met through their involvement in local and national Round Table activities, where they were both members of a number of committees organising fundraising events and functions. Jayne was always the creative element in our committees and events and she is keen to bring her talents to the world of interior landscaping, said Howard. It was definitely the creative side of working with plants which attracted me to join Howard in setting up this franchise, added Jayne. There are so many possibilities with plants selecting the right species and positioning them in the right place can really transform a grey office space or vast hall. Urban Planters has grown consistently over the last ten years to become a leader in interior landscape installation and maintenance across the UK and is now the fastest growing company in the industry. Thomas Palfreyman, Managing Director of Urban Planters Franchise Ltd said: We are pleased to welcome Howard and Jane to our network. They bring a wealth of business experience and a lot of enthusiasm to the company, and we are confident they will provide businesses in the Leeds and Bradford area with the top quality service our customers have come to expect from Urban Planters.

Urban Planters franchises span the length and breadth of the UK, ensuring clients get national expertise at a local level. The company regularly works with some of the countrys leading architects and their striking designs have been recognised with many national awards.

Chapter 1 Compulsory Licensing of Patents: The Bayer/Natco Case

Enrico Bonadio
City University London - The City Law School 2012 (2012) European Intellectual Property Review (Issue 10), pp. 719-728

Abstract:

On 9th March 2012 the Indian Controller of Patents granted the first compulsory licence in India. Indian generics producer Natco Pharma Ltd. has been granted the right to produce and sell in India Bayers patented medicine Sorafenib, which is useful for treating advanced stage liver and kidney cancer. After a brief introduction on compulsory licenses under the TRIPS Agreement and the Paris Convention, the author verifies whether the decision of the Controller of Patents satisfies the conditions set forth by the these international treaties in relation to compulsory licenses. He concludes inter alia that the ruling might be in violation of the non discrimination principle enshrined in Article 27(1) TRIPS. General comments are also made about the role of compulsory licensing in guaranteeing the availability of patented products to a wide range of consumers and in general the transfer and dissemination of the associated technology.
