WORKSHOP 1 Ken Reid, David Reeping, Elizabeth Spingola, Zachary Brewer and Heather Sapp NSF Sponsored workshop: A Classification Scheme for "Introduction to Engineering Courses"- testing and using the scheme

Many Universities and Community Colleges offer a course entitled "Introduction to Engineering" or similar. These are often designed from scratch and tend to be designed

by instructors to cover what they feel is important. Therefore, while they may be prerequisites to second-year courses, first-year engineering programs are not necessarily integrated into the curriculum. Further, since they are often designed with little consideration for existing models, overall outcomes and content vary widely.
In response, a classification scheme useful to specifically define Introduction courses has been developed and validated though an NSF-sponsored program. The goal of this session will be to introduce and further test the scheme, and introduce a number of ways the scheme can be used at any institution to assess and improve Introduction to Engineering courses. Communities of practice for those interested in exploring additional areas of research will be developed. This workshop should prove valuable for any instructor or coordinator in the first year of study in engineering, or those interested in retention into the second year

WORKSHOP 2 Title: Engineers + Online Learning Portfolios = Leadership Development Presenters: Dr. Christine Gouveia, Moses Lee, Emily Keller Logan, from Seelio.com Free-T shirts for the first 15 people who attend this workshop. Engineers cannot just rely on their technical skills to be effective leaders. The process of design, build, and test takes the collective effort of a team and must be organized and managed through effective leadership. In this workshop, we will share best practices of how the process of building online portfolios can help students discover who they are, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and where they want to go with their engineering education. In addition, effective use of portfolios can help students build character and be better prepared to tackle the pressing issues of our time.
