dXtime installation notes for academic institutions

The enclosed CD contains an installer for version 5.0 of the dXtime software. Any new dX databases that you have ordered will be on a separate dXdata CD. dXtime dXtime is a dedicated time series data program, providing access to a wide range of economic and financial time series databases in a single integrated environment. In dXtime the latest numbers and full historical time series are instantly available in data tables or graphs, and time series calculations and customised graphs are easily implemented. Installation in a multi-user environment The dX databases should be installed in a shared folder on the network accessible by all users. The dXtime program can be installed on a shared folder on the network or individual users can have their own local installation. However, we strongly recommend that dXtime be installed on the network and that users do not have their own local copy. The advantage of this setup is that when the dXtime program and licence files are updated on the shared program folder, users will automatically be using the latest software and licences as well as the data. Initial installation on the network 1. 2. 3. 4. The installation of the dX version 5.0 software should automatically commence once the CD is inserted into the CD drive. Otherwise, run SETUP.EXE from the CD. When prompted for the Type of Installation select Multi-user (networked) installation. Then at the Multi-user Installation prompt, select Initial installation, to be performed by the Database Manager. The installer next prompts for the Program Location and Database Location. We suggest using the default paths for the program folder and database folder but editing the drive letter to the appropriate network drive. At the prompt for the Workfiles Location, edit the default to an appropriate location. After the Start Installation prompt, dXtime is installed to the dX program folder on the network. The installation also creates several other files in the dX program folder that can be used for installing additional users (discussed below). If you have received a dXdata CD, insert it into the CD drive. The installation of the dX Databases should commence automatically, otherwise run SETUPDATA.EXE from the CD. This will launch dXtime to copy the database files to the database folder specified in Step 4 above.

Installation for additional users 8. 9. If users have a previous version of dXtime installed on their own hard disks, the new version will install over the top of the old. Additional users can install dXtime to run on their computer from the network by browsing to the dX program folder on the network, and either: (i) (ii) double-clicking on NETSETUP.EXE and following the prompts for folders and other setup information; or, more simply, if they have the same network drive mappings as the dX Database Manager, double-clicking on the Install Additional Workstation short-cut (this will run NETSETUP.EXE using the folders and other setup information as specified in the initial installation by the dX Database Manager).

This will create the necessary registry entries and short-cuts to run the dXtime software from the network .

More information on network installations is contained in NETWORK.RTF which is installed in the dX program folder. However, in brief, note that the initial installation creates NETSETUP.EXE, the Install Additional Workstation short-cut, and the text file VALUES.TXT in the dX program folder. VALUES.TXT contains the setup information including the software and data locations that were specified during the initial installation. For example, the text file VALUES.TXT might contain the entries MAINDIR=X:\DXW DATADIR=X:\DXDATA where X: is the mapped drive letter of the network share containing the software and data. The Install Additional Workstation short-cut has the command line X:\DXW\NETSETUP.EXE /M=VALUES.TXT

Another installation method is for additional users to run SETUP.EXE from the CD on their own computer and when prompted for the Type of Installation, select Multi -user (networked) installation and when prompted for the type of multi-user installation, select Additional workstation installation using a shared Program Folder.
