Conclusion I think that I will base my design on images 4 and 2 as I think I can combined the two ideas and designs together to create ring that is aesthetically appealing and functional.

[5]

Idea 1: I have chosen the following image of a ring because the design of it is pleasing to the eye, functional and practical and suits my level skills based on my experimentation and knowledge polymer clay. Constructing the shape The size of the ring is of the two layered a reasonable size but bows seems to be quite cannot be achieved easy based on my level by using polymer clay of skills but due to the as it would be size and thickness it difficult due to it may be difficult. being delicate. The colour used is nice and pleasing to the eye but cannot be done using polymer clay. The thickness of the middle band of the bow creates emphasis on the size and gives the ring a bolder look.

Summary: From the research I have decided to use the design and structure of this ring in some of my ideas because it reflects ideas that can be taken into consideration when I choose my final design such as the structure of the two layers of the bow and the size of the ring itself.

Idea 2: I have chosen the following image of a ring because of the structure. The structure is aesthetically pretty and practical as it suits my level of skills based on my knowledge of polymer clay and my experimentation. The thickness of The use of stirps gives the bow and the ring itself a bolder look although this will be difficult to succeed using only polymer clay the design is visually pretty through use of the colours. the band in the middle of the bow builds emphasis similar to Idea 1. The construction, structure, thickness and size of the bow are reasonable and can be accomplished using polymer clay.

Summary: From the research I have decided to use this idea because the design influences and reflects my idea one the size, thickness and structure of the ring.

Case study Section 1 Design process

1. Read Evaluating success. List the financial and personal rewards that Dinosaur Designs' partners can enjoy because of their company's success. The Financial reward that Dinosaur Designs partners can enjoy because of their companys success is the reward of maintaining and running your own successful design company that is financially doing well. Then on the other hand is a personal reward which is having that joy and pride of earning your own success as well as creating a product that people love which leads on to become a big part of their lives. 2. Look at the Dinosaur Designs' career path. What things indicate the company's success and popularity? The first step to the companys success was in 1988 when the company first participated in big fashion events and started selling in Melbourne which then was featured in Australian Vogue magazine. Then in 1989 when the opening of their first store in Sydney. The next major step to the companys success was in 1991 when for the first time were featured an international magazine (British Vogue). From then on the company started to grow as they sold a wide range of jewellery through high profile stores. Another way their success is shown is to look at the company now and how popular and successful its gotten as it is associated with Louis Vuitton at the moment who is one of the most successful well-known brands in the world. 3. Develop a flow chart of a design process undertaken by the team at Dinosaur Designs.

[10]

4. Dinosaur Designs uses specialist designers for some aspects of their work, for example, architects and graphic designers. Compare the design process used to design Dinosaur Designs' jewellery and that used by the product designer Angelo Kotsis. What are the similarities and differences between the two processes? Angelo Kotsiss design process begins for torches is by finding inspiration then brainstorming ideas and designs as to how the torch will turn out to look. Then models are created using a 3D printer and manufactures tested them. Dinosaur Designs begin their design process for jewellery is by making prototype plasticine. Then next they then create the mould and mast the resin. After colours are mixed into clear resin which then items of jewellery can then be created and left to set. Finally last touches are added and the item of jewellery is complete. The similarity between these two design processes is that both Angelo Kotsis and Dinosaur Designs have a stable design plan and is stuck to so that the items being produced are aesthetically pretty to the eye. The difference between both design process is that Dinosaur Designs know or have an idea as to how there piece of jewellery will turn out where as Angelo Kotsis goes searching for inspiration to find ideas about how the look of his torch will be.

5. The Dinosaur Designs team are passionate about their work. They use a particular language to communicate their process of design, for example, hand-felt and finessing. Select these words and in the context of the passage, discuss what the designer means by them. When the designer uses the phrase Hand-felt they mean or refer to how the material or item feels in their hand. On the other hand when the designer uses the phrase Finessing they mean or refer to creating or producing something better and improving on or refining it which means to remove unwanted features from something.

Section 2 Factors influencing design

1. Visit the Gallery of work. Touch, feel and look are important to Dinosaur Designs. Look at three images and describe them in terms of the elements of design, such as line, colour and texture. This Louis Vuitton chess set pieces designed by Dinosaur Designs are a unique idea. The texture of the set pieces seems to be smooth and circular. As seen in the image there are no sharp edges on them. The use of black and white brings the original look to the chess set.

This Plastique instillation designed by Dinosaur Designs is a different kind piece that Dinosaur Designs have done. As shown in the image the circular items are dangling off each other. There are various colours are used such as red, yellow, green and blue.
[11]

This Silver resin inlay designed by Dinosaur Design is a new design that has worked out to be aesthetically appealing. As shown in the image they have used a red Maroun colour resin in the middle which gives emphasis and a bolder look to the piece. The texture of the piece seems to be polished and glossy. And the shape of the piece appears to be just right with the circular edge. 2. Dinosaur Designs manufactures all their resin pieces in their own studio. What kinds of Occupational Health & Safety practices might they have to consider for employees working in a studio or workshop environment? Occupational Health & Safety practices that Dinosaur Designs may have to consider for employers are having a safe and healthy working environment, having safe systems of work, having the machinery and equipment and substances in a safe condition, having adequate facilities and lastly having adequate information, instruction and training.

Section 3 Roles of designers

1. The Dinosaur Designs team received training in the visual arts as well as professional art studies. Suggest an alternative career path that might give you the skills necessary for designing objects and/or jewellery. An alternate career path that the Dinosaur Designs team could have taken is Bachelor of Creative Arts- Visual Arts. The gain full knowledge of what makes up figurative and non-figurative art, visual art techniques and contemporary art theory.

2. Jewellery design is a design specialisation of the area of study: Products. What other design specialisations does Dinosaur Designs work in? Home ware is another design that Dinosaur Designs specialises in. They design various home ware items that include vases, ornament etc. The material used to make the vases is glass. The vases that they produce come in many shapes, sizes and colours. The size, shape and colour vary regarding on what youre looking for and the environment that it will be in.

3. List some of the reasons people wear jewellery. Describe your favourite piece of jewellery and the reasons it is important to you.

[12]

Some reasons why people like to wear jewellery are because it has a unique way in expressing many things such as emotions, mood, personality, character and style. Another reason would be because it may symbolize or mean something. Another one would be because it is a sense of fashion. And lastly it could be a part of their culture to wear a particular piece of jewellery. My favourite piece of jewellery would have to be either earrings or rings. The types of earrings that I favour are dangly ones. The reason for that is because I feel that earrings always complete your look and the reason for dangly ones is because its my kind of style. The reason that I favour rings define elegance and class and without these your look in incomplete.

4. Identify the contribution Dinosaur Designs makes to the improvement of everyday life. Dinosaur Designs change people and makes them happy. Whether its a piece of jewellery that completes an outfit or whether its a piece home ware where an item makes a statement or is very decorative and full of colour that adds the style to a home that your aiming for.

Section 4 Generating ideas

1. Identify some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate creative ideas. About the designer. Some of the methods used by Dinosaur Designs to generate ideas are by making many different items such as screening fabrics, t-shirts and jewellery. They would then open up as stall at their local markets and see which item would sell the most and what customers where interested in the most which ended up being jewellery. By finding this out they were able to generate ideas about what needs to be made and how as well as adapting their product to suit the market.

Section 5 Selects, analyses, presents and applies research

1. Experimenting and testing of design ideas was important for the development of Dinosaur Designs' first innovative products for Paddington markets. Describe the experimentation and testing that was carried out. The experimentation that was carried out first started off with Louise, Liane and Stephen creating many different original products that included t-shirts and jewellery and experimenting with paint and screening fabrics. The three of them then opened up a stall at their local markets in Paddington where their work would be sold. By selling their products they can indicate which product was sold the most and what costumers were interested in the most. Jewellery ended up being the product that was sold the most and what costumers were interested in the most. Dinosaur Designs were then able to combined their creative ideas from this experiment and turn them into a successful business.

[13]

2. Dinosaur Designs are influenced to a certain extent by current trends. What sources of information would be particularly useful for jewellery designers? Some sources that would be practically useful for jewellery designers are sculptures, paintings, art, art history and the just the natural world. These sources give the designers inspiration as well as information on what, why and how to design what was inspired.

Section 6 Mixed material technologies

1. If you were to design a small pendant how could it be mass produced? Research the different ways in which you could produce multiple copies of this object. It is said that a ways you could produce multiple copies of a small pendant would be to hire your own team or group of workers that are willing to create multiples of the small pendant or another option would be to contract out the mass production of the small pendants to a corporation that specializes in this kind of manufacturing.

2. For the small pendant research how it can be finished. How does it affect the visual appeal of the object? To finish the small pendant off is to first clean it. By cleaning it you are removing all the dirt and unnecessary particles on the pendant. After cleaning the pendant it is always a good move to polish it as the polish will affect the visual appeal by giving the pendant a shiny, glossy, sparkling finish look. Your end product should turn out aesthetically appealing after these two steps are completed.
