Study of the Book of John

1) Read through John chapter 1:1-28 The Word Became Flesh

Introduction John writes this Gospel to present Jesus, the powerful Son of God, who comes
in human flesh, gives his life on the cross, and then returns to the Father all with a view that we may believe him and receive eternal life. His coming shows us how much the Father and the Son love us, and his parting command is that we should show the same sacrificial love to one another.

Verses 1 & 2 reveal so much, that it is mind boggling. On a personal note, it is these two verses that pieced together the Old Testament with the New Testament. It revealed the sovereignty and age (or constancy) of Jesus, along with one of the mysteries of Genesis and the creation of mankind. The first mystery comes in Genesis 1:26, when God says, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness (Boldness added for emphasis) Did you read that right? I thought the God was alone in the beginning, yet He uses the term, our, which means plurality. Answer the first question before moving on to the next page. (No peeking) 1) Who or what was with God in the beginning? How did you come to that conclusion? (Be Very Specific)

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. John 17:5 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. John the Baptist Denies Being the Christ

The Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites to find out who John (the Baptist) was. John immediately confessed, I am not the Christ. They asked him, Are you Elijah? which seems on the surface to be an odd question, or is it not so odd? Lets briefly examine some facts; the Jews believed that the Messiah would one day come, they believed that the prophet Elijah would appear before His coming, and believed that it would happen just before the great and dreadful (judgment) day. 5 See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. Malachi 4:5 It seems to be ironic that they were searching for the Messiah, but believed that Jesus couldnt be the One because He did not come as a Lion. (Note: many Christians believe that one of the two witnesses described in the Book of Revelation (1:1-14) is Elijah, we will explore this when we study Revelation.) 2) We know that Christ will come again one day, although nobody knows when. What are some of the myths you have heard about the second coming?
