Description of the Tashi Prayer
By Khenpo Karthar
I will speakbrieflyonthistext. Shakyamuni Buddhataught what isknownasthe
Sutra of Auspicious Words. Thisprayer consistsof thenamesof eight different buddhas, fol-
lowedbythenamesof eight bodhisattvas. Thentherearethenamesof eight femalebod-
hisattvasandof eight dharma, protectors. Theseareall outlinedinthisprayer. Theteachings
of theLordBuddhatell ustorecitethesethirty-twonamesof enlightenedbeings. Bycalling
uponthenamesof thosethirty-twoenlightenedbeings, wecangenerallybypassor get ridof
all theobstaclesinthislifetime, whatever theyare. Evenif, youexperiencedifficulty, lackof
success, or havean illness; whatever negativitiesyoufacearepurifiedandyouareableto
passthroughthat kindof problemandbecomesuccessful inanythingyouwish. That isthe
temporarybenefit of thisprayer. Theabsolutebenefit isespeciallyfor someonewhoisprac-
ticingDharma. Anyobstaclesthat might prevent realizationcanbedispelledbythisprayer;
therefore, it isstronglyrecommendedbytheBuddhafor practitionerstorecitethisprayer at
thebeginningof their practice.
Sometimesyoumayfacedangeroussituations, suchasthethreat of deathbyvarious
elementsor byanimals, or anysort of threat toyour life. If suchacircumstancearises, if you,
instantlyrecitethisprayer, youwill definitelybeabletoremovethat obstacle. Evenif you
havebaddreamsbother youat night, if youwakeupandrecitethisprayer, that baddream
will instantaneouslydisappear. If youreadthisprayer onceor twiceeverydaywithout miss-
ingasingleday, youwill increaseall positiveeffectsandaccomplishanygoal. Alsowhen
youdie, if youhaverecitedthisprayer onadailybasisinthislifetime, youcaneliminatethe
illusorystateof bardoandobtainenlightenment inthebardo.
Theactual sutra, whichismuchlonger thanthisprayer, wascondensedintoitspresent
formbyMipham, Rinpoche. Sincehecomposedthisprayer, LamaMipham, alongwithhis
disciples, aswell asJ amgonKongtrul theGreat (thefirst J amgonKongtrul) andhisfollowers
haveall recitedthisprayer frequentlythroughout their lives. Themodernteacherswhohave
visitedtheWest suchasKaluRinpoche, DezhungRinpocheandall present Eminenceshave
alwaysrecitedthisprayer at thebeginningof their tripwherever theyhavetravelled. Because
of thisstrongtradition, I wouldliketorequest all our studentstodothisprayer aspart of their
dailypractice. I havebeenwantingtoadopt thisprayer inour students practicefor some
time, but for different reasonswecouldnot makeit availableuntil now. NowI amintroducing
thisprayer, whichI personallyfeel isveryauspicious, tothegeneral communityfor thefirst
time.
Oneof theparticular reasonsI want all of youtodothisprayer isthat I andother
teachersareconstantlybeingtoldbyour studentsabout losingjobsor not beingabletodecide
anacareer or not findinganewjobandvariousobstaclesof thiskind. WhenI amaskedto
helppeopleinthissituation, I immediatelyrecitethisprayer for that disciple, for hisor her
achievement of agoodlife. It wouldbewisefor studentstorecitethesameprayer whenever
theyfaceproblemsrelatedtolivelihood, suchasfindingajob.
