Assignment 1 Part 1 : A summary of Transformational Leadership at Workplace - A Refurbishing Approach for Renovating Workplace Metrics by Ms. Vijit Chaturvedi. Part 2 : Comparative study of different leadership styles with transformational leadership

The article talks about the necessity of an entirely new kind of leadership which is highly accelerated, accommodating, enriched with resources, savvy and highly strategic because of the constantly changing world and its demands. There is a need for such transformational leaders in present organization, since there is a dire need for such leaders who can work on drawing the experience, ideas, capabilities, initiative and inner drives of all employees and keep it all focused on achieving the mission, vision and strategy of the organization. Few instances are also provided which signifies transforming leaders in the ever changing world and changing conditions. Instances like companies spending more money on computing and communications gear than the combined monies spent on industrial, mining, farm and construction equipment. Facts like already, an estimated two-thirds of U.S. employees work in the services sector, and knowledge is becoming most important product, and less than half of the workforce in the industrial world will be holding conventional full-time jobs in organizations by the beginning of the 21st century. With such accelerating changes and expectations of all stakeholders both within and outside the organization, a manager is expected to fulfill multiple roles and be multi-faceted in accomplishing them to the best of his abilities.

This article also tells that as a leader, what is important is how he empowers his people to innovate, take risks, make changes and keep getting better. By taking the which says that they ,they have 20% Time, a well-publicized policy of encouraging employees to actively spend

20% of their time working on pet projects, by supporting both creativity and collaboration, without fear of failure.

Also talking about the Need and Core Areas of Transformational Leaders, the articles tells that transformational leaders should be those people who are unique in a way that they can take control of the situation as team leaders by conveying the clear vision of the groups goals, a marked passion for work, and an ability to make the rest of the group feel recharged and energized. It also tells that not all leaders with authority and defined competencies can be termed as transformational leaders. Though transformational leaders can be developed through training and coaching programs that focus on behavior modification through action planning, it is first important to understand the basic, core areas and functions along with positive outcomes from a transformational leader.

Another part of the article talks about Traits and Functions of a Transformational Leader. The various points involved are Arousing Intellectual Stimulation-The first and foremost component which a transformed leader can adopt is creating a culture of creativity among fellow members. A transformed leader not only challenges the status quo, he also encourages creativity among followers. Then Practicing Individualized Consideration - A transformational leader focuses on individual attention on consistently practicing a planned SWOT analysis of employees and serving as a coach or mentor in preparing a SAP (Strategic Analysis Profile), thus canvassing a vivid and growth driven platform for employees. Another is Incubating Inspirational Motivation in Handling People - This is the degree to which the leader articulates a vision that is appealing and inspiring to followers. Leaders with inspirational motivation challenge followers with high standards communicate optimism about future goals and provide meaning for the task at hand. At last is An Avatar for Exhibiting Idealized Influence The transformational leader serves as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate the leader and internalize his or her ideals.

At last we discuss Essentials in Building a Transformation Leadership Approach. Transformational leaders should develop insights on managing Business Emotions of people in understanding

the push and pull factors of employees. It is important to determine how, where and in what direction the strategy of transformational leaders can be developed. After a strategy is decided, the next step should be to develop a workable Implementation plan to execute the planned strategy. Identifying the Cultural impediments, if any, that have grown surreptitiously and that may work as impediments for transformational leaders, is the next step. Then Skill Auditing of group members by these leaders. This lead to better mentoring and coaching at the target points, thus, leading to effective results.

Part 2:

Now we do a comparative study of different leadership styles with transformational leadership. Types of leadership styles are :

Laissez-Faire Autocratic Participative Transactional

Now laissez-Faire differs from transformational leadership in a way that a laissez-faire leader lacks direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under his supervision. Highly experienced and trained employees requiring little supervision fall under the laissez-faire leadership style.A from transformational leadership on other hand depends on high levels of communication from management to meet goals. It requires a lot of involvement and also motivational qualities to follow a transformational leadership. Talking about autocratic leadership, it allows managers to make decisions alone without the input of others. Managers possess total authority and impose their will on employees. No one challenges the decisions of autocratic leaders. It is not about transformation but more about

holding the power and enforcing others to do the task as instructed.it doesnt involves transformation or motivational goals.

Then Participative style includes responsibility of making the final decision rests with the participative leader. Participative leadership boosts employee morale because employees make contributions to the decision-making process. It causes them to feel as if their opinions matter.it is somewhat similar in terms of transformational but in transformational leaders motivate employees and enhance productivity and efficiency through communication and high visibility. Last one is Transactional leadership. It is said that Managers using the transactional leadership style receive certain tasks to perform and provide rewards or punishments to team members based on performance results. Managers and team members set predetermined goals together, and employees agree to follow the direction and leadership of the manager to accomplish those goals .In transformational leadership leaders focus on the big picture within an organization and delegate smaller tasks to the team to accomplish goals,and punishments and rewards are most of the time not in the picture.
