Walden January 28, 2014 Really Responding- to Other Students Writings Response Ive had a workshop for every major assignment for my course in ENGL-1101. It might me different compared to how this course does a workshop because in 1101, my professor did all of the revising instead of the students. If the students did any of the revisions, it would be considered peer review. I like workshops because it is a method for improvement. It isnt constructive criticism, but an assistance or a helping guide for making a paper better. The workshopping in this course could be better than my last course with workshops, if the students actually put effort and revising peoples work. Editing and revision are two different forms of review. Editing is practically telling the writer what they should do because Id be doing the work for them by marking over the areas that need improvement. Revision is all about suggestions and helping the writer get ideas on how to improve their writings on their own without me pointing it out for them. The only time Id edit someones paper would be if theyve revised it themselves a few times, and praise that their writing is good enough to turn in as a final draft. Id only edit it to help them finally be done with it and move on to the next assignment. Id use revision for many purposes because it is an opportunity for improvement. Revision is used for rough drafts throughout their progress of an assignment, and in order to improve, they need to understand what is done wrong, what can be better, and how to do it. The only time Id use both editing and revision at the same time would be if it is a last minute rough draft, and the next draft had to be the final draft.

Tran 2 I have some concerns about peer workshops. Some students would just skim my work instead of actually reading the entire paper. I want them to be placed in my perspective by actually reading the paper. Skimming does not help them understand what Im going through. My peer comments dont seem to help me revise anything because they write things like good or explain more. I need details to actually help me write an outstanding paper. My peers often praise my papers though, but that isnt always a good thing if I dont have criticism either. The author, Richard Straub, made many good key points in this reading. One of his ideas that I thought was very helpful was to not be short and sweet. People need to be clear and specific when writing a paper because the writer wont understand what is reall y wrong with their work since they think they did the best they could do on their paper (Straub 1999, 140). I will try to be as helpful as I can when I review my peers paper because in order to have a good grade in this course, students need to know understand how to apply the practices they had in class to their assignments. Also, another helpful hint would be how I sound when I revise another students paper. I shouldnt sound like Im their teacher or their boss because it would discourage how they feel about their writing skills (Straub 1999, 139). I need to sound more like a friend, so they will know Im here to help and support rather than criticize.
