Goal: Content Knowledge: Coral Reefs (Sci-Pack)

Describe Goal: I will become more knowledgeable in the Coral Reefs. I will understand the anatomy, the life and energy, and the crisis of coral reefs. I will complete "Coral Reef Ecosystems" SciPack and receive at least a 70 percent on the post-assessment. I have chosen this goal because it is what I am required of. I am required to improve on a subject and get a grade over 70% on a post-test. I am interested in coral reefs and so this is a good topic for me to gain knowledge about. --

Mackenzie Bullard's PD Portfolio Report - Page 3 of 8 -

Concerning Experience:

I have successfully taken, completed and passed the SciPack: Coral Reef Ecosystems. I received a certificate saying that I passed. A passing score means that I received at least a 70 percent or higher on the post-assessment, which meets my goal. I also wanted to learn about the anatomy, life and energy and crisis of ecosystems. I have successfully fulfilled this goal as well. I learned that the nematocyst paralyzes the prey, the tentacles capture the prey, ingestion takes place in the mouth while digestion takes place in the stomach. Coral reefs can be hard or soft can be in the form of a fringing reef, barrier reef or atoll. Corals can be reproduced by synchronous spawning, or releasing sex cells at one time for fertilization, or by budding, where a parent pinches off a part to make a new individual. Many species, at least 4,000 that have been recognized, find the coral reef to be their home. Furthermore, the producers, such as phyto-plankton, at the bottom of the food chain, provide the most energy for the coral reef, while the apex predator, such as the barracuda, at the top of the food chain, provide less energy for the coral reefs. Many factors such as stress, weather and human impacts can harm the reefs. I am more aware of what a coral reef is and how it works. I have learned a few important things about accomplishing goals such picking an interesting topic, being motivated and managing time wisely. As a student, I wanted to pick a topic that I was interested in, before I put hours into the assignment. As a teacher, I will also let my students pick topics for projects that they work on. If students are working with a subject that they are interested in, they are likely to be more motivated in doing it and doing it efficiently and effectively. Last, I learned to manage my time. I am busy with work, school, etc. However, I started this SciPack early and did a little bit in my spare time each day or every few days. I took proper notes so that I would be prepared for the post-assessment. In doing so, I have reached my goal even way earlier than I was expected. :) I enjoyed this website. I have never experienced working with NSTA Learning Center. In the future, I will use this as a tool for me, as a student, to gather my work and have it in a safe place. As a future teacher, I will keep this website as a tool to use in a science lesson or unit plan. Like I mentioned before, I think it was a good idea to let the students pick our own topics for this assignment. I will be sure to implement this strategy when I become a teacher.

Goal: Content Knowledge: Coral Reefs (Podcast)

Describe Goal: I want to gain knowledge in the value of coral reefs. I will complete a NSTA Podcast: "Value of Coral Reefs" to become more knowledgeable. I chose this goal because I already have previous knowledge of coral reefs from the SciPack. I learned a lot about the coral reefs in terms of how they work and interact, but now, I want to learn the value of the coral reefs. I want to be more knowledgeable in who and what the coral reefs are valuable to. --

Reflection
I have learned a lot about coral reefs. Now, I have learned about the value of them. Biologically, coral reefs are very valuable because they are so diverse. There are several thousands of different species of reef fish that live that make the coral reef a part of their home. In the line of fisheries, coral reefs provide jobs and food sources. As I will talk about later, coral reefs actually protect the shoreline that they live near from tides and large waves. Coral reefs are valuable in the fact that they are a hidden treasure. Scientists dont know everything that is out there so they are looking and searching. Scientists are even, in fact, searching for the cure to cancer in marine organisms. People travel from all over the world just to look and be surrounded by the coral reefs. The tourism that is attracted to these special parts of the word brings in a lot of money. A study in 2004 showed that the coral reefs of the Hawaiian Islands actually provided Hawaii with $360 million per year while the overall asset value of the Main Hawaiian Islands is $10 billion. Coral reefs are important from an educational resource. Children should be learning about coral reefs because they are so diverse, interesting and amazing in the fact that so many different species and organisms work together to share one habitat. Coral reefs are very important to certain cultures. The islands and corals are so connected that they are part of each others culture. Relating to social values, many people rely on the ocean for recreation and spiritual importance. I have met my goal because I have gained a better understanding of the value of coral reefs in many different aspects. A few of the most important things that I have learned in the process of accomplishing my goal was finding resources, time management and determining key facts from basic facts. First, I completed a SciPack over Coral Reefs. Then, I wanted to take it further and decide what the value of the coral reefs are. I had to search for the best resource available to use to get the most information. Also, it takes good time management to find a podcast, watch it and write about it before the due date. In a busy schedule, I had to plan time to each of these accomplishments. I didn't want to mention word for word what the podcast said, even though it was all interesting. I had to summarize the key facts from the rest of the facts in order to efficiently write down what I had learned. Accomplishing this goal has improved my effectiveness as an educator because I now know the skills involved. I know how to find the material for future use. Accomplishing my goal has affected my future professional plans. I like the idea of using NSTA in the classroom. I will use this in my classroom because it is a good tool that lets the students explore on their own, make and complete goals and learn about science in an interactive way. Furthermore, I could use what I have learned about coral reefs and their value to teach others.

My Technology Skills
Notes for: My Technology Skills

Goal: Skills in Technology: IPAD

Describe Goal: I will become more skillful in using an IPAD. I will find appropriate apps for appropriate assignments, explore the apps and use them efficiently. I am going for a technology duel license, therefore I want to be able to support a content area with technology. I have never used an IPAD before. The resources of IUPUC have given me the opportunity to explore the apps on the IPADS and find appropriate ones for assignments. --

Reflection
I have never used an IPAD before. There have been a few assignments in which I have found the opportunity to use technology, such as the IPAD, to complete them. Through these assignments, I have learned about the IPAD, how it works and how to effectively use the applications. In E323, I was assigned to create a cartoon. I chose to use Toontastic. Toontastic is an application on the IPAD in which one can create a cartoon. The producer of the cartoon gets to choose between certain settings and characters, or has the opportunity to draw their own. Then, one adds music to the setting and animation to the character before publishing the cartoon to Toontube. I have the added the website URL in which my cartoon is uploaded. In W210, I was assigned to take digital photos and edit them. Instead of using my camera on my phone or digital camera, I chose to use the IPAD. I used the Camera app to take the pictures and PS Express to edit the pictures. One can choose between several different editing options such as: crop, straighten, adjust color, and add effects and borders and so much more. In W210, I was assigned to find an app that relates to my unit plan. In my unit plan, the students are required to write 10 facts from certain websites and then create a brochure. I found the app: Jotter that the students can use to write their facts on, on the IPAD. Using Jotter, one can write notes and then send them via Email, Facebook, Twitter, or Photos for safekeeping. In addition to these IPAD applications, I used Dropbox, which is also a website, to upload the screenshots that I took of these apps. Dropbox is a secure place to store documents and pictures. I took the screen shots from the IPAD, uploaded them to the Dropbox app, and then got on Dropbox.com to retrieve them onto my PC. In accomplishing this professional goal, I have realized how many resources are out there. I had never used an IPAD before, and now I want to use it for everything! I had a lot of fun exploring the different applications and finding the one that best fit my assignment as well as the finding the one that was most effective and efficient for educational use. I have learned that it does take patience finding a "good" application. Just like a website, some are more effective and efficient than others. In an educators standpoint, I want to see IPADS and technology being used more often in classrooms. As technology is becoming more and more available, I want to see children using them. There are several educational applications on the IPAD that would make learning fun and more interesting and interactive for students learning any subject. As for the future, I plan on using the IPADS and other technology resources available to me more often. IPADS have enhanced the projects that I have worked on thus far, and they will do the same for the future. I will start bookmarking or making a list of the applications that I have used and liked so that I have reference for the future. As I said before, I think it would be a really good idea to have students in elementary, middle and high schools, using IPADS on a daily basis. Not only would the students be more familiar and updated with technology but they would be learning in a fun and interactive way. Learning is about gaining knowledge and understanding is applying that knowledge that has been gained. I feel that students will be learning and understanding the material they do on the IPADS because they are phsyically interacting with it. Eventually, I would love to have a classroom in which all of the students had an IPAD for educational use.
