This is my first take at writing an introductory statement for this project. I know it will need some revisions. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is a top ranking Midwestern college focused on excellence in engineering education. The campus community fosters positivity and promotes ethical and moral responsibility in shaping its graduates to become national and global citizens at various multinational organizations. As of Fall 2013, Rose-Hulman redefined its strategic plan. The first part of the colleges Vision Statement states: Vision: Rose-Hulman graduates will be inspired and prepared for lives of purpose and success, defining and solving the problems of a complex global society. There are six goals that the college has developed to fulfill this newly defined Vision statement and to remain the number one undergraduate engineering college in the nation as ranked by the U.S. News and College Report for its 2014 college guidebook. This is Rose-Hulmans 15th consecutive year with this top rating. This Six Sigma Black Belt project addresses two of the colleges goals. Goal 2: Rose-Hulman will give students a vision of the breadth of their possible futures and will prepare them to achieve these futures. One listed strategy in obtaining this goal is: Strategy 2A: Convey the message to current and prospective students that a science, engineering, and mathematics education can lead to a diverse range of futures that can positively impact the world. Goal 4: Rose-Hulman will be a diverse, globally-connected, sought-after community in which to live, learn, and work.

If Rose-Hulman is to accomplish these goals, especially in this day and age, then it needs to put recycling in the forefront of students educations. To be a serious contender in positive life-long education, Rose-Hulman must be able to provide a respectable model for its students in terms of waste management. These habits among college students should be reinforced in their educational experience, both in and out of the classroom. The institute also has a Sustainability Team whose mission is to reduce, to the extent technologically and economically feasible, the environmental impacts associated with the operations of the Institute. The team seeks to promote the responsible management of resources through shared learning, community involvement and in the reduction of waste. They are working to unite efforts on campus to promote a culture of sustainability that reduces Rose-Hulmans environmental footprint, while contributing to the development of our students as leaders and responsible citizens. [Campbell, 2007] Further, the Campus Dining Services website addresses waste by stating: We view the responsible management of waste as a requirement to sustain and restore our natural resources as well as the communities in which we serve. We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint by fostering a culture that reduces, reuses, and recycles waste. To support closedloop waste management processes, our innovative practices include partnering with suppliers who share our vision, working to reduce source packaging, enabling recovery and reuse of discarded materials, and recycling waste to create raw materials for other purposes. We are always seeking new and innovative ways to minimize our environmental footprint. This campus-wide Six Sigma project acts as a spark to spawn additional studies in attaining efficiency in the processes carried out daily by students. One recent campus project was a friendly contest among the various resident halls to see which hall could consume the least electricity. Activities like this get students and faculty brainstorming campus processes and

procedures that can be improved. Rose-Hulmans campus-wide goal can be defined by the Lean concept of Kaizen, which means continuous improvement. This is a critical concept in any Six Sigma implementation. NOTE TO SELF AND CLASS: may want to add other campus-wide projects helping with reuse, recycle, etc., such as going trayless, etc. Or, may want to delete the last paragraph. Is it necessary? Item Linked to a defined process Yes No X

I will write this part as well. I will include information from Susans slideshow to explain how Rose -Hulman is recycling today the procedure. For example, we have a free trash bin from Republic, and they sort our single stream of recyclables, though we will receive no cash. We recycle aluminum, but only x times a year. Ill put in some graphs that Susan showed us about the amount of cardboard we recycle. Also, explain here where our trash goes, how much trash we have a year, show picture of waste dump site near Riley. Item Customers identified Yes X No

The primary customer of the project is Rose-Hulman as a whole, or simply the institute. We performed a Voice of Customer (VOC) with Susan Reynolds, Mike Taylor, Rohan Talwar, Justin Perry, Jake Campbell (note: give positions, responsibilities, reasons for having them at the meeting) for info about how recyclables are currently dealt with ... We want to help RoseHulman as a customer reduce its waste footprint ... The secondary customer is Rose-Hulman students, faculty, staff. Why? They are the ones using & not using the recycling ins correctly they are the ones that we want to affect their behavior ... they are the customers of the process VOC done with Rose-Hulman students on why recyclables being thrown into waste ... (NOTE: we did this in class) RHIT students are environmentally aware, and we knew that waste reduction would be of interest ... We did a VOC with Rose-Hulman students, then grouped their wants with an Affinity Diagram, and finally constructed a Critical to Quality (CTQ) Diagram with [Minitabs Quality Companion software] to more specifically define (and if possible, quantify) these wants. The CTQ Diagram is displayed in Figure 1.

Wants or Needs for Customers to Recycle

How to Address the Wants or Needs of Customers

CTQ's

Place one recyling bin within 10 feet of every trash can Location of Bins Remove the trash cans from ALL classrooms

Once the school recycles 1,000 lbs then we will have a school-wide pizza party

Incentives

For every piece of recylable you recycle you get a dollar

Decrease the amount of recylables in non-recycling trash bins

Scan your ID after you recycle and you get a point. After 20 points you get a free coffee/smoothie

Show a running total

Education

Post shocking pictures of landfills, dying wildlife, etc

Have posters with pictures that show what can and cannot be recycled

Design of the Bin

Design the trash can so that you have to put 2lbs of force in order to throw something away
