Students will be able to categorize characteristics of Narrative Poetry b. Students will be able to apply their knowledge on Narrative Poetry and identify characteristics of The Raven to determine why it is a narrative poem 2. a. Students will be able to appraise differences in reading The Raven, to hearing it read on audio by listening to it being read. 3. a. Students will identify Alliteration in the poem The Raven b. Students will identify Assonance in the poem The Raven c. Students will identify Internal Rhyme in the poem The Raven d. Students will identify Imagery in the poem The Raven e. Have them to listen to an audio reading of The Raven while they follow along on a hard copy 5 mins. Discuss why The Raven is a narrative poem and point out certain unique characteristics 40 mins. Have the students complete the activity packet 5 mins. Discuss what I will be teaching them and what our goals for the day is 2nd Have key terms on the smart board when they walk into the room to write into a voc. journal. 3rd -Then introduce them to Edgar Allen Poe, describe who Edgar Allen Poe is, his contributions as a poet and a basic autobiography of his life, so students will have a better understanding of his poetry. 4th Explain what narrative poetry is and what its characteristics are PROCEDURES: Body & Transitions Pass Out The Raven Packet 1st Begin by talking about The Raven, and the significance of the Raven as a symbol 2nd Have them listen to an audio reading of the poem, while they follow along on a copy of the poem that will be in their packets. 3rd Discuss why this is a narrative poetry aloud, have them to identify parts of the poem that make it a narrative poem Discuss How the sound effects used in the reading effects the overall meaning/tone of the poem Have the students get in small groups identify 5 terms they were unfamiliar with in the poem and define them Identify different poetic elements and apply them to the poem 1. Alliteration 2. Assonance 3. Internal Rhyme 4. Imagery 5. Tone Identify the setting of the poem Identify words that are repeated throughout the poem Put Stanzas of poem in order Them have them list any question they may have on the poem, that I can explain at the beginning of our next class meeting
