Sissonville Middle School Grade/Subject 7th Grade / English Unit Topic Edgar Allen Poe Poetry Lesson Topic The Raven / Narrative Poetry, Tone, and compare and contrast different audio readings Lesson One INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES 1. a. Students will be able to categorize characteristics of Narrative Poetry b. Students will be able to apply their knowledge on Narrative Poetry and identify characteristics of The Raven to determine why it is a narrative poem 2. a. Students will be able to appraise differences in reading The Raven, to hearing it read on audio by listening to it being read. 3. a. Students will identify Alliteration in the poem The Raven b. Students will identify Assonance in the poem The Raven c. Students will identify Internal Rhyme in the poem The Raven d. Students will identify Imagery in the poem The Raven e. Students will identify the tone of the poem The Raven and describe it in writing WV CSOS 1. R.L.7.5 Analyze how poems form contributes to its meaning 2. R.L.7.7 Compare and Contrast a poem to its audio version; analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium. 3. Introduce class to vocabulary terms needed for days activities and introduction to what I will be teaching 5 mins. Background information/PP to Introduce the class to Edgar Allen Poe 5 mins. Discuss Narrative Poetry and characteristics of narrative poetry 5 mins. Introduce The Raven and discuss the importance of the Raven as a symbol

Have them to listen to an audio reading of The Raven while they follow along on a hard copy 5 mins. Discuss why The Raven is a narrative poem and point out certain unique characteristics 40 mins. Have the students complete the activity packet 5 mins. Closure, summarize key point STRATEGIES Teacher led discussions, flip lesson, class discussions, audio readings, worksheets, group work DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS (Learning Styles, Students with Special Needs, Cultural Differences, ELL) copies of poems to handout to fulfill visual learner needs audio readings of poem to fulfill audio learners group work so all students can receive peer support PROCEDURES: Introduction/ Lesson Set 1st - Pass out the pretest and allow them to complete and take up to take home and grade after class. Discuss what I will be teaching them and what our goals for the day is 2nd Have key terms on the smart board when they walk into the room to write into a voc. journal. 3rd -Then introduce them to Edgar Allen Poe, describe who Edgar Allen Poe is, his contributions as a poet and a basic autobiography of his life, so students will have a better understanding of his poetry. 4th Explain what narrative poetry is and what its characteristics are PROCEDURES: Body & Transitions Pass Out The Raven Packet 1st Begin by talking about The Raven, and the significance of the Raven as a symbol 2nd Have them listen to an audio reading of the poem, while they follow along on a copy of the poem that will be in their packets. 3rd Discuss why this is a narrative poetry aloud, have them to identify parts of the poem that make it a narrative poem Discuss How the sound effects used in the reading effects the overall meaning/tone of the poem Have the students get in small groups identify 5 terms they were unfamiliar with in the poem and define them Identify different poetic elements and apply them to the poem 1. Alliteration 2. Assonance 3. Internal Rhyme 4. Imagery 5. Tone Identify the setting of the poem Identify words that are repeated throughout the poem Put Stanzas of poem in order Them have them list any question they may have on the poem, that I can explain at the beginning of our next class meeting

Terms and how they apply to poetry Asking questions at the beginning of lesson, to gauge prior knowledge and gain interest ASSESSMENT: Formative Asking questions as I am presenting Definitions, and application of poetry elements worksheet Walk around an help students as they are working on the worksheets ASSESSMENT: Summative No summative assessment for this lesson MATERIALS Computer Speakers Internet access audio readings of poem Smart Board Packets with copy of poem, and worksheets Power Points EXTENDED ACTIVITIES If Student Finishes Early I am including a picture they can color in their packets, they could work on those quietly If Lesson Finishes Early Have the students to attempt to write their own short narrative poems If Technology Fails Will have readings copied on CD Will have vocabulary terms in their packets Will have a copy of all power points so I can read the information aloud and write on white board POST-TEACHING Reflections Data Based Decision Making
