5 Years 5 Years
TIMELINE  Objections raised toward modern  Online access creates more exposure to new &
professional lifestyle old information

 Surge in winter sports creates need for  Cars are becoming more hard-lined, separate
better performing fleece body parts equals quicker & cheaper to produce

 More health products emerging as low-fat  Electronics are becoming more accessible and
craze comes full swing their quality is improving. Production is faster.

 Acceptance of the quality VHS is waning as  Crops are genetic-engineered so they make food
companies are vying to create the next video safer (in principle) and more resistant to damage
and recording format (saving money)

 Further eschewing of traditional design  DVD finally goes to market and is poised to unseat
methods the VHS as the supreme

 Boeing, biggest airplane making company is

finally catching on to “fly-by-wire” (FBW)

 Global warming is becoming apparent.

Recycling of previously un-recyclable
materials begins. People are going out of
their way to live more “green”
 As more and more people are able to access the internet, the boundaries of access to information are
becoming more fluid. Ideas are spreading more rapidly and people are able to experience things in a
DRIVING matter of seconds that they may never have had the opportunity to experience at all before.
FACTORS
 The trend of efficiency in technology is evolving at a more rapid pace. Certain costly steps need to be
erased from production processes so more money can be made and more time is available to the
individual (genetic engineering, “new edge” design)

 The model of the young professional has become complacent enough in society that groups are becoming
restless and beginning to rebel against the “yuppie’s” conformist ideals and create their own unique sub-
culture that goes against the grain of traditional modern methods (“grunge”, winter “extreme” sports,
David Carson’s cutting-edge exposé in Beach Culture magazine). As a result of this rebellious atmosphere,
people are more open to embracing the new and exciting ideas that come their way and their consumer
habits and practices reflect this.
