ADAPTATION TO NEW SCHOOL

Throughout the first week I was in Sekolah Temenggong Ibrahim Penggaram (SKTIP), I tried to adjust and adapt myself towards the new school culture as best as I could. This is important so that I can get along well with the people at the school during this one month period of practicum here. Besides the administrators, staff, teachers and school stooge. I also had run a familiar custom process, that is introduced myself to the students that I would take over the whole one months period of training here. I had been given one of the mainstream classes that is year 3 Gigih. I will be teaching them, English language subject throughout this one month period of practicum. An amount of 10 periods had been allocated for me for each week, each period is a half an hour lesson. Year 3 Gigih consist of 30 bright and eager to learn pupils. Im really looking forward to undergo my first practicum and teaching them. I also believed a relationship had been established between me and the teachers here. They had given me my own place to work in the staff room. I really felt appreciated by the warmth welcome they had given me. The administrators and staff also had helped me a lot throughout the first week Im here by introducing me to the school.

ANALYSIS

Since this is the 1st phase of the practicum for me, Im shocked the acclimation process occurs much better than Id expected. Good cooperation from all the people in the school helps smooth the flow and allow me to finish my first week here without any trouble at all. I also find that this school environment is very comfortable in terms of teaching and school climate. I feel very happy because it felt like I am accepted here and Id been well received by the whole school community who is very friendly and they always try to help as best as possible.

921106-01-5283 For the first week Im here, I got the chance to observe my mentors, the teacher who is assigned to teach English Language for year 3 Gigih throughout this year En. Muhammad Nidzam B. Mohamad Shariff, and the Head Panel for the school English Language subject Miss Lee Kim Lian at her class, year 5 Gigih. I will start my lesson next week since En. Nidzam want to finish his lesson for the previous topic first. I will start my lesson next week from unit 5 Having Fun. I learned that, the pupils are on intermediate level when it comes to the English Language, they already know how to pronounce words correctly and their vocabulary bank is quite broad. From my observation of the class for this whole week, I also encounter few disruptive behaviors among the pupils. Some of the pupil having problem in focusing in class. These disruptive behaviors is a major concern for me, if they dont focus towards the lesson it will become a problem for them when continuing the lesson. They might not be able to complete the lesson and not understand the task given. I gained lots of useful information about the class that I will be teaching from my observation. En. Nidzam had done a great work teaching them and I hope I could do the same when it is my turn to teach them. I just need to prepare myself with the appropriate knowledge when it comes to pupils with disruptive behavior in the class, knowledge on how to handle and gain back their attention in the class. In terms of being expose to the new school culture, I feel blessed that the teachers and staff of SKTIP is very open, easy to interact and to bond. Every time I had an issue regarding my work they are happy to help, all I got to do is ask in a polite way. Im able to gain the data about the school in a jiffy because of the efficiency of the staff and teachers.

IDEAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

An experience teacher is a good source to refer when you are trying to come up with ideas for improvement of your lesson. As for me, my mentor En. Nidzam and Miss Lee had given me a lot of good inputs and beneficial ideas to be used during my lesson later. They surely are an experienced teacher, they had lots of ideas that I can improve during my lesson. Mostly, Id been advised to be very patience when dealing with the pupils during the lesson. I need to stress on the importance part of the lesson through drilling, so pupils will be able to remember and get the important inputs of the lesson. Drilling is an important component during a lesson because, it improve the relationship between stimulus and response, a pupil shall be given extensive drilling to get a good outcome. In addition, the more drilling is been done the better the result and outcome. Simplify the lesson according to their level and only make the lesson one level higher if want to

921106-01-5283 challenge them during the PNP session. Just like what Krashen Theory of (I+1) had suggested. I need to get the informations about 3 Gigih before end of the week so Ill know the names of my pupils and their English Language level. I also need to know about the basic condition and behavior of the pupils of 3 Gigih. Classroom climate that had been establish also need to be obtain from En. Nidzam so I can conduct my lesson smoothly in the future.

PERIOD

Time constrain is a major problem for me, nevertheless I still need to implement the ideas for improvement so that my lesson will run smoothly. I estimate the time needed for me to overcome the unresolved issues is by the end of the week and I achieved it. During the whole first week, En. Nidzam and Miss Lee had helped me in getting all the information that I need before I start my teaching. I feel so thankful and bless under their care and guidance.

CONCLUSION

As a trainee teacher who is toddle to be a real teacher in the future, I have to work hard to gain information and prepare myself with the appropriate knowledge because they are obligations so that future teachers are eligible to teach efficiently. In the end, I concluded that the adaptation of myself to the new school climate can be enhanced with the right effort and assistance. I will also start implementing the useful inputs I got from my mentors on the second week.
